As the society evolves and the population grows, the demand for electrical energy increases. Search for new energy resources, increase the efficiency of the existing power plants, and cost minimization are actions to be taken. One way to reduce the cost is predicting the need for electricity. This problem is not new. This paper presents a low-cost method for short-term electric load prediction. After studying his stability, the algorithm is implemented in LabVIEW and a week of power data is used to test it and assess its performance.

One of the most prominent challenges in data mining is the clustering of databases containing many categorical attributes. Representation of such data in continuous, Euclidean space usually does not reflect the true segments of data. As a crucial consequence, clustering algorithms working in continuous, Euclidean space may produce segmentations of poor quality. An alternative direction explores graph-based representation of data. In this paper, we show that graph-based data representation is well suitable for the case of categorical attributes. In particular, we offer the following contributions: i) we propose and analyze a flexible graph-based genetic clustering algorithm, where the ideal clusters can be characterized using external cluster quality functions, called kernels, ii) we study kernels, and define the crucial property of effective kernels, iii) we introduce a framework for distributed data-oriented graph clustering computations. In contrast of the complexity of our problem, which turns out to be NP-hard in our analysis, experiments show that in case of well clusterable data, our algorithm has attractive scalability properties. We also perform experiments on real medical data that provides us with further evidence about the practical applicability of our approach.

The Minnesota Code is the evaluation method of reference ECG signals. The experimental studies compare the effectiveness of the computer based Minnesota Code applications to human usage of the code system, and the results showed that computers are as effective in the evaluation of ECG signal with the Minnesota Code as humans are with visual analysis. A fuzzy-based approach can be used to bypass known imperfections and imprecision of the existing Minnesota Code rules. A fuzzy-based approach also has issues with corner case inputs, which can lead to incorrect partial results and incorrect diagnostics outputs. The fuzzy environment provides more information for the medical expert or for the further levels of the whole hierarchically organized diagnostic structure. The authors of the paper present a possible solution for fine-tuning the diagnostic rules using neural networks. In this paper, the standard fuzzy-based approach is extended to a neuro-fuzzy solution.

The growing number of threats and attacks, that are also present in encrypted communication, give a great importance to Intrusion Detection and Prevention Systems (IDPS). Some of these attacks have a great impact on service availability. This paper presents a way of detecting these attacks and threats by correctly classifying the early recognized encrypted applications. The proposed architecture uses anomaly detection in comparison with early recognized encrypted applications to determine intrusive and non-intrusive behavior.

Supervisory control application forms a core for comprehensive control of industrial processes. Industrial application of this character consists of many components providing the whole supervisory control system functionality. The most important issues in supervisory control are data acquisition from technological process level, visualization of process together with control function, alarm situations indication, display trend of process variables and other components. This article presents graphical objects used in visualization screens to show what is happening at technological level of controlled process with trend objects as an important part of supervisory control application, using software products from Wonderware Corp.

In the PhD dissertation [6] optimization models were developed for the pavement management system, which could help planning the optimal maintenance work. This model can be generalized for those engineering structures, where there are several types of structures and for each structure there are many components with many different types of deterioration options and duty uses. The condition of application is: the deterioration of certain components not only depends on time, but on the extent of use. In this paper we would like to present the development of Engineering Structures Management System, the different models, and furthermore a practical application — the deterioration model of car parts and the planning of their maintenance.

We propose, in this paper, a global approach, based on a formal modeling of the mobile Human-Computer Interaction. It aims to analyze an ubiquitous environment using ontology, described in OWL; and modeling the environment by using a combination of Petri Nets and XML as the Petri Net Markup Language (PNML). In our research, we are interested particularly in the integration of OWL with PNML. How to ensure data exchange between the analyzing and modeling phases of a Human-Computer System? And how can the OWL data feed our Petri Nets?

This paper deals with robust control of linear parameter varying (LPV) system (synchronous motor) by a LPV controller. State space equations of asynchronous motor in d-q rotating frame are nonlinear with respect to rotor speed. Nonlinear equations are rewritten to parameter form describing dependency on rotor speed which is assumed to be known by measurement or by estimation. LPV controller is designed using H∞ theory to govern stator currents of synchronous motor. Simulation results presented in this paper show that current controller provides good current tracking over whole range of rotor speeds.

Presented paper is devoted to application of selected thresholding algorithms and it compares obtained results. Studied methods were verified on a set of microscopic images of aluminum alloy. The goal of this project is satisfying image segmentation as a part of a preprocessing algorithm. This procedure is necessary for the following images processing based on application of Hough Transform.

The article is focused on diagnostics in the field of aviation turbo-jet engines. Evaluation of their technical status, and potential failures and pre-failure processes can be improved by monitoring their thermally loaded components. Part of the research in the given area also involves mathematical modeling of the channel measuring the exhaust gases temperature, using neural networks to compensate for dynamic errors of slow thermocouples used in such measurements.
