Abstract Despite calls for bridging the gap between the sociology of social class and the sociology of elites, there are few examples where this actually has been done. This article seeks to do so by applying approaches and statistical techniques commonly used in studies of social mobility in an analysis of circulation mobility in elite formations. Based on register data on the whole Norwegian population born 1955-1975, we analyze the educational and professional intergenerational mobility among “the successful inheritors”. In this way, and by focusing on mobility barriers and trajectories, we seek to uncover patterns of stability and change in family dynastic relations, i.e. relations that primarily are based on inherited forms of capital. These patterns can also reveal what forms of intergenerational capital conversion have been the most common, and therefore also the most acceptable, in the upper and upper middle classes in postwar Norway, and what conversions have been less common. The results indicate that even in the supposedly egalitarian Norwegian elites, some inheritors prove to be “more equal than others”. Keywords : Elite. Intergerational capital conversion. Mobility. CIRCULACAO NO TOPO: ELITES, MOBILIDADE SOCIAL E CONVERSAO INTERGERACIONAL DE CAPITAL Resumo Apesar dos apelos para suprir a lacuna entre a sociologia das classes sociais e a sociologia das elites, ha poucos exemplos em que isso tenha sido feito. Este artigo busca fazer isso aplicando abordagens e tecnicas estatisticas comumente utilizadas em estudos de mobilidade social em nas analise da mobilidade de circulacao em formacoes de elite. Com base em dados de registro de toda a populacao norueguesa nascida entre 1955 e 1975, analisamos a mobilidade educacional e profissional intergeracional entre "os herdeiros bem-sucedidos". Desta forma, e focalizando as barreiras e as trajetorias de mobilidade, buscamos descobrir os padroes de estabilidade e de mudanca nas relacoes dinasticas familiares, ou seja, relacoes que se baseiam principalmente em formas hereditarias de capital. Alem disso, esses padroes podem revelar quais formas de conversao intergeracional de capital tem sido as mais comuns e, portanto, tambem, as mais aceitaveis nas classes media-alta e na classe alta da Noruega do pos-guerra, e quais conversoes tem sido menos comuns. Os resultados indicam que, mesmo nas elites norueguesas supostamente igualitarias, alguns herdeiros provam ser "mais iguais do que outros". Palavras-chave : Elites. Este artigo analisa os principais meios de interacao social e cultural e as estrategias matrimoniais e sucessorais de reproducao social da elite grande proprietaria de terra criadora de gado extensivo no Rio Grande do Sul. Os meios de interacao social e cultural, como clubes, associacoes culturais e esportivas sao fundamentais para a reproducao de um habitus de elite e a constituicao de estrategias matrimoniais marcadamente endogâmicas ao proprio grupo. A analise das estrategias sucessorais indica que o tamanho do patrimonio em terras herdado e diretamente dependente da taxa de fecundidade das familias, assim como o patrimonio formado por ocasiao do matrimonio e dependente da realizacao de um bom casamento. O foco da analise sao duas geracoes que nasceram no seculo XX, a primeira entre os anos de 1900 e 1930 e a segunda entre 1920 a 1960, em que seis linhagens de grandes proprietarios sao analisadas, perfazendo 99 matrimonios. REPRODUCTION STRATEGIES AND MODES OF DOMINATION Abstract In order to understand how the social order perpetuates itself, it is necessary to establish a table of reproduction strategies (biological investments, inheritance, education, economic investment, social investment, marriage alliances, symbolic investment and sociodicy) and of the system of reproduction mechanisms (labor market, inheritance laws, property rights, schools). Various examples taken from remote social contexts, such as the transmission of first names in Kabylia and Renaissance Italy or the domestic policy of peasant families, show the profound differences between, on the one hand, societies in which the arrangements for reproduction and the reproduction strategies they engender are wholly based, in the objectivity of social structures, on family structures, the main if not exclusive instrument of reproduction, and must therefore be organized around educational and matrimonial strategies, and, on the other hand, societies in which these strategies can also count on the structures of an organized state, the most important of which, from the point of view of reproduction, are those of the educational system. Esta pesquisa dedica-se a analise da construcao da autonomia infantil em criancas em situacoes de abrigo. As Casas Abrigo sao espacos cuja organizacao repousa no excesso de regras e controle do tempo, do espaco e das acoes infantis. Logo, esta pesquisa dedicou-se a investigar as estrategias atraves das quais as criancas - da Casa da Crianca em Imperatriz, Maranhao – constroem sua individualidade junto ao grupo. Embora nestas instituicoes o controle excessivo nao deixe espaco para a agencia infantil, as criancas criam estrategias para garantir sua autonomia, burlando as regras estipuladas. Ora, em que situacoes as criancas fazem escolhas, se vivem sob constante observacao dos cuidadores? De que forma imprimem suas impressoes e sua individualidade? Este artigo mergulha no universo das criancas em situacao de abrigo e revela seu modo de transformar um contexto de institucionalizacao em lar, marcando-o com sua agencia. CHILDREN’S AUTONOMY VERSUS INSTITUTIONAL CONTROL: AN ANALYSIS OF CHILDREN’S AGENCY AT A SHELTER HOME IN IMPERATRIZ CITY Abstract This research analyzes the construction of children’s autonomy in shelter situations. Shelter Homes spaces are organized based on an excess of rules controlling children’s time and space, as well as their actions. Therefore, this research focused on investigating the strategies used by children – from Casa da Crianca in Imperatriz, in Maranhao – to build their individuality in the group. In these institutions, even though the excess of control leaves no room for children’s agency, children create strategies to guarantee their autonomy by circumventing the stipulated rules. Well, in what situations do children make choices if they live under constant observation of caregivers? How do they record their impressions and their individuality? This article delves into the world of sheltered children and reveals their way of transforming an institutionalization context into a home, marking it with their agency. Logo, esta pesquisa dedicou-se a investigar as estrategias atraves das quais as criancas - da Casa da Crianca em Imperatriz, Maranhao – constroem sua individualidade junto ao grupo. Embora nestas instituicoes o controle excessivo nao deixe espaco para a agencia infantil, as criancas criam estrategias para garantir sua autonomia, burlando as regras estipuladas. Ora, em que situacoes as criancas fazem escolhas, se vivem sob constante observacao dos cuidadores? De que forma imprimem suas impressoes e sua individualidade? Este artigo mergulha no universo das criancas em situacao de abrigo e revela seu modo de transformar um contexto de institucionalizacao em lar, marcando-o com sua agencia. CHILDREN’S AUTONOMY VERSUS INSTITUTIONAL CONTROL: AN ANALYSIS OF CHILDREN’S AGENCY AT A SHELTER HOME IN IMPERATRIZ CITY Abstract This research analyzes the construction of children’s autonomy in shelter situations. Shelter Homes spaces are organized based on an excess of rules controlling children’s time and space, as well as their actions. Therefore, this research focused on investigating the strategies used by children – from Casa da Crianca in Imperatriz, in Maranhao – to build their individuality in the group. In these institutions, even though the excess of control leaves no room for children’s agency, children create strategies to guarantee their autonomy by circumventing the stipulated rules. Well, in what situations do children make choices if they live under constant observation of caregivers? How do they record their impressions and their individuality? This article delves into the world of sheltered children and reveals their way of transforming an institutionalization context into a home, marking it with their agency. O presente artigo objetiva analisar a exposicao Graffti: New York meets the Dam , do Museu de Amsterda, enquanto uma zona de contato (CLIFFORD, 2016). Esta exposicao foi realizada entre 2015 e 2016, em parceria com o Museu da cidade de Nova York, uma vez que no inicio da decada de 1980, ocorreu um encontro, em Amsterda, entre grafteiros estadunidenses e holandeses, o que modifcou profundamente o grafte produzido na cidade. O proposito, assim sendo, e analisar, a partir da exposicao, se as representacoes das assimetrias e dos confrontos do encontro entre grafteiros de Amsterda e de Nova York estao presentes na construcao narrativa da exposicao e conferem a mesma o carater de uma zona de contato. Portador de um dos mais prestigiosos titulos e nomes, herdeiro de uma grande familia da nobreza militar que “serviu a Franca por 500 anos”, ex-aluno da Ecole Polytechnique, diretor-presidente de uma das filiais da Schneider, o decimo segundo duque de Brissac, que se casou com May Schneider, uma descendente de uma das maiores familias de industriais, e a realizacao do aristocrata perfeito, possuindo um notavel conjunto de qualidades e caracteristicas distintivas. O capital social herdado de sua familia e que ele jamais deixou de manter e valorizar, ao mesmo tempo em que sabia, ocasionalmente, reconverte-lo, esta, sem duvida, na raiz desta concentracao de riquezas. Centro de uma rede de relacoes com uma extensao e densidade excepcionais, o duque de Brissac adquiriu desde a infância, nos estabelecimentos de ensino secundario de “boa companhia” que frequentou, a arte e o gosto de cultivar as relacoes herdadas, e de as ampliar. A analise das memorias do duque de Brissac e de varias obras escritas por outros membros de sua familia permitiu reconstruir a historia desse empreendimento de acumulacao e gestao de capital social. The social assets handed down to him by his family which he has constantly built up, maintained and exploited while knowing, whenever the occasion demanded, how to reconvert it, are, without doubt at the root of this concentration of riches. At the focal point of an exceptionally widespread and dense network of relations, the Duke of Brissac has acquired, from infancy and later in “well-bred” High Schools, a taste for cultivating and extending the kinship networks devolved on him through inheritance. Neste artigo sao examinados casos de agentes provenientes de “familias de politicos”, atuantes em dois estados brasileiros: Rio Grande do Sul e Minas Gerais. Eles tem em comum a condicao de porta vozes de “causas” – notadamente o empenho na interpretacao de questoes nacionais, regionais e relacionadas a consagracao genealogica (incluindo a eternizacao ou celebracao da “familia”) –, que traduz a aquisicao de um duplo e indissociavel reconhecimento como “politicos” e “intelectuais”. Nao obstante as similaridades, os perfis coletivos e individuais ilustram padroes de afirmacao social e politica discrepantes, relacionados tanto as configuracoes historicas e regionais em que exerceram suas carreiras (escolares, profissionais e de cargos politicos) como aos seus itinerarios especificos. Assim, eles sao exemplares da paulatina diversificacao de segmentos da “elite politica” brasileira (principalmente no seculo XX), das redefinicoes das modalidades de acao, e dos repertorios de mobilizacao, bem como dos condicionantes a afirmacao de especialista no trabalho de representacao (no duplo sentido). SOCIAL BASES, REPRESENTATIONS AND USES OF SYMBOLIC SPOILS IN “POLITICAL FAMILIES” Abstract This article examines cases of agents from “families of politicians” operating in two Brazilian states: Rio Grande do Sul and Minas Gerais. They have in common the status of spokesperson for “causes” - notably the commitment to interpret national, regional and genealogical consecration issues (including the perpetuation or celebration of “family”) - which means the acquisition of a double and inseparable recognition as “politicians” and “intellectuals”. Notwithstanding the similarities, the collective and individual profiles illustrate discrepant patterns of social and political affirmation, related both to the historical and regional settings in which they pursued their careers (school, professional and political office) and to their specific itineraries. Thus, they are exemplary of the gradual diversification of segments of the Brazilian “political elite” (especially in the twentieth century), of the redefinitions of the modalities of action, and the mobilization repertoires, as well as the conditioning of the statement of expert in the representation work (in the dual sense).
