Abstract:Through This Way Out, a film produced by the American Friends Service Committee, this piece considers the possibility of the “activating archive,” a collection that charges us to look at an object that doesn’t make sense and to reevaluate our assumptions. Maybe archival materials—and particularly the accidental or mysterious ones—have the power to politicize us, similarly to how our intentional decisions can politicize collections.

New Buildings, New Pathways: Toward Dynamic Archives in Latin America and the Caribbean

Abstract:This article addresses the proliferation of audiovisual centers and cinematheque projects in Latin America, which translates into the construction of new buildings, the renovation of existing ones, or the transformation of old landmark buildings for this purpose. By discussing specific examples, both national and regional, the construction of new cinematecas and audiovisual centers is seen here as an encouraging move that calls for the appropriation of images of the past for a badly needed mobilization of the present and future. Hence the specific circumstances that surround the creation of each project inform the model of services that they can offer, impacting the ability to activate collections and engage citizens. Despite some commonalities, the specificity of each country and region calls for a heterogeneous and informed understanding of the Latin American and Caribbean audiovisual archival context. Looking beyond the generative moment at the turn of the twenty-first century, the discussion reminds us that the societal, political, and administrative enclaves of these institutions are key to illuminating discussions on the complex negotiations that are central to activating archives.

Abstract:This article argues the original compositions in the romantic comedy Music and Lyrics (2007) and the romantic drama A Star is Born (2018) illustrate the differing depictions of love in the two films—one rooted in the specificity of the on-screen relationship and the other more general and rooted in the emotion of the relationship—which reflect a distinctive positioning within their respective genres.

Radioactive Music: The Eerie Agency of Hildur Guðnadóttir’s Music for the Television Series Chernobyl

Abstract:The acclaimed television miniseries Chernobyl (2019) features an eerie soundtrack that musicalizes the silence of radioactivity. Hildur Guðnadóttir’s score is composed of field recordings from a nuclear power plant, treated and fitted together in ways that blur the lines between music and sound design. The immersive qualities of the soundtrack provide television audiences with new means of sensing the invisible ecological consequences of human activity.
