Beyond Survival: Narratives of Empowerment and Childhood Agency in Malaysian Youth Literature 超越生存:马来西亚青年文学中的赋权与童年代理叙事

Abstract:This article discusses various depictions of childhood agency and empowerment in three examples of Malaysian children’s and young adult literature in English to highlight the value and viability of these literary texts as stories for survival. In emphasizing agency as “the new paradigm of childhood,” this article argues that these literary texts, as examples of narratives of empowerment, are crucial for the durability and relevance of youth literature in contemporary multicultural societies like Malaysia through their capacity to demonstrate how young people are and must be seen as active in the construction and determination of their own social lives, the lives of those around them, and the societies in which they live.
摘要:本文以马来西亚英语儿童和青少年文学为例,探讨了对儿童能动性和赋权的各种描述,以突出这些文学文本作为生存故事的价值和可行性。在强调代理是“童年的新范式”时,本文认为这些文学文本作为赋权叙事的例子,对于青年文学在马来西亚等当代多元文化社会中的持久性和相关性至关重要,因为它们有能力展示年轻人如何在构建和决定自己的社会生活、周围人的生活以及他们所生活的社会中发挥积极作用。

Abstract:The Inner Hum Project is a project by Power of Play (POP!), a Malaysian-based organization founded by two play therapists whose mission it is to help children connect to their inner worlds and allow them to have the courage to be themselves. They support children in finding their own balance in a safe, nonjudgmental space through story, play, and the expressive arts. The creation and use of a specially designed book was part of this project.

Parting the Cobwebs 拆散蛛网

Abstract:Through this autoethnography, Cassandra Lau reflects on the power of shared book reading (SBR) and bedtime oral storytelling (OST) on the remedial teaching of Leo, a boy with mild dyslexia. In SBR sessions, she used the Malay phonetic charts, multimodal coding, and after-reading activities including colorful mosaic-letter tiles to raise phoneme awareness, tracing the orthographic loop, and spelling. A summary of Leo’s favorite books and his reactions to them were noted. Flexible and shared creation of OST brought therapeutic calming effects to Leo and secured his identity and self-efficacy. Through the power of stories, Leo was able to make connections between sounds and letters and was finally able to read.
