Abstract:This article examines the earliest Japanese translation of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s Sara Crewe, Or, What Happened at Miss Minchin’s (1888), to illuminate how Shizuko Wakamatsu (1864–1892), one of the first Japanese female translators, constructed a girl’s complex psychology with her unique narrative techniques and innovative linguistic styles. By adding new layers to a girl’s inner voice, Wakamatsu presented how the translation of Burnett’s story played a vital role in paving the way for the development of Japanese girls’ fiction in the Meiji period (1868–1912). Wakamatsu’s translation thus created a new literary arena in which young female readers could nurture their imagination and experience a sense of agency by reading stories about a character whom they could relate to.

Abstract:Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a sensitive topic many adults avoid discussing with children. However, picturebooks, if selected carefully and handled responsibly by adult guardians, can provide a suitable medium to talk with children about the issue, yet many texts have significant shortcomings. This article investigates the gender-role allocation of adults in thirty-eight narrative English- and German-language picturebooks addressing CSA in light of reinforcing a gender-biased stereotyping of menacing men and well-meaning women.

Abstract:Literature for today’s teenage girl is an important area of YA literature with structural elements of such narratives as vibrant portraits of a teenage girl, her search for an appropriate life path, and, in a broader context, the issue of the changing role and place of women in society. Just as society has evolved in the profile of young girls, so has literature reflected this change. Both a look at earlier Polish novels for girls as well as more contemporary depictions are found in this exploration of socially engaged literature that has developed a new model of teenage heroes and heroines.
