High-speed communication networks, such as B-ISDN and Internet, allow several types of network traffic to coexist in the same transmission medium and belong to the category of multi-service networks. Several new results on flow configuration, pricing and routing are presented in addition to overviews of relevant previous works. These derived by making use of the concepts Nash equilibrium, Pareto optimality and Stackelberg strategies borrowed from game theory. These are highlighted by means of illustrative examples. It is claimed the control-theoretic view on incentives in the theory of non-cooperative games provides for tools to solve various control and management problems in high-speed communication networks hence many QoS problems too.

This paper proposes a new decorrelation algorithm for a soft decision feedback blind equalizer (soft DFE) based on a DFE switching structure model. The algorithm is developed using joint entropy maximization (JEM) framework suitable for introducing a desirable nonlinearity directly into the stochastic gradient algorithm. Simulation results have shown that an efficient decorrelation based on JEM algorithm provides a better convergence rate and switching robustness than the existing hard DFE solution.

Wavelength rerouting procedure is one possible approach for improving the available bandwidth utilization in optical WDM networks employing wavelength routing technique. In this procedure, a wavelength continuous route for a new lightpath that needs to be established is created by assigning new wavelengths to few existing lightpaths while retaining their routes. The benefits of wavelength rerouting technique are researched in this paper. For this purpose, we developed the software for wavelength rerouting simulation. A simulation is performed and illustrated for an optical WDM network with nine nodes and mesh topology. Results show that network performances in terms of lightpath blockings could be improved when using rerouting technique.

The main goal of this work is to propose a way to compare two nontraditional algorithms by solving topological problems on telecommunications concentrator networks. The algorithms suggested are the simulated annealing algorithm (SA) and the genetic algorithm (GA). The proposed algorithms are used for finding an optimal solution for a small network, the results are being analyzed and some recommendations for the proper use of these algorithms are made

In this paper a high performance and simple scheduling algorithm for combined input-crosspoint crossbar switches, called exhaustive round-robin with limited service (ELRR) is presented and analyzed. We propose using of this scheduling system for arbitration at inputs and crosspoints. If the virtual output queue (crosspoint buffer) becomes empty, the input (crosspoint) arbiter updates its pointer to the next location in a fixed order. Otherwise, the pointer remains at the current virtual output queue (crosspoint buffer). To avoid unfairness under some extremely unbalanced traffic pattern limited service matching is presented. It is shown that this new solution offers high performance for several admissible traffic patterns using only one-cell crosspoint buffers.

The drive toward the implementation and massive deployment of wireless sensor networks calls for ultra-low-cost and low-power nodes. While the digital subsystems of the nodes are still following Moore's Law, there is no such trend regarding the performance of analog components. This work proposes a fully integrated architecture of both digital and analog components (including local oscillator) that offers significant reduction in cost, size and power consumption of the overall node. While such a radical architecture cannot offer the reliable tuning of standard designs, it is shown that by using randomized signal processing techniques, a dense network of such nodes can achieve throughput linear in the number of channels available for communication. Moreover, the ratio of the achievable throughput of the untuned network to the throughput of a tuned network with perfect coordination is shown to be close to 1/e.

This paper presents three multiuser detectors structures: the conventional detector, the optimum detector and the MMSE detector. The error probability performances are evaluated and compared one another, as functions of signal to noise ratio, of number of users and the correlation coefficients between them. Finally, several conclusions are highlighted, with respect to the level of performance achieved and implementation complexity.

We analyzed active distributed Bragg reflectors (DBR) filters containing negative refractive index material and utilizing gain medium. We analyzed the possibility to utilize active gain materials with continuously tunable bandgap in order to compensate absorption losses and to offer new functionalities. To this purpose we consider the use of compound semiconductors as the active media which enable the designer to tailor their gain by modifying their composition and doping level. This allows for an optimized design of the NRM by giving an additional degree of freedom.

The unknown current distributions (UCDs) along a system of two coupled asymmetrical vertical dipole antennas arbitrarily placed above a lossy half-space, are determined in this paper. Antennas are fed by two ideal voltage generators of voltages U/sub 1/ and U/sub 2/. The UCDs are determined by numerical solving of system of integral equations of Hallen's type (SIE-H) using the point-matching method and the polynomial current approximation. The SIE-H was solved in the so-called symmetrical and asymmetrical working regimes, and afterwards, self- and mutual- admittances/impedances were determined. The influence of the semi-conducting medium, expressed by the Sommerfeld's integral kernel (SIK), was modelled in a very simple, general and accurate way.
