In this paper two applications, which fit into the current trend of the development of mobile devices, are described. The first is designed for the driver and the second for the pedestrian assistance. Two traffic events like traffic lights change from the red to the green and vehicle approaching to pedestrian are detected. Proper warnings are generated and the suitable reaction is performed. The car may start movement without unnecessary delay and the pedestrian may change the movement trajectory in order to avoid an accident. Thus, the proper traffic flow and urban safety improvement are supported. Results of initial experiments show a high efficiency of proposed mobile solutions.

Quality of singing is a subjective description of an impression received while listening to the singer. The features that can be related to the quality of singing are among others: intonation, vibrato, tremolo and timbre. This paper presents the results of the analysis of tremolo feature in the singing. The method presented here is developed to estimate the tremolo over singing samples. At the beginning the term of tremolo is defined and differences and similarities to other music terms, as vibrato and wobble, are described. Then the method developed to estimate the tremolo over singing samples is presented. Finally the authors try to find an answer to the question whether the tremolo feature is useful to evaluate the quality of singing.

This paper presents our approach to staircase detection and perception using monoscopic vision. The simulation of the proposed algorithm is conducted on a 4 degree of freedom teleoperated vehicle. The presented solution can detect a staircase and calculate its angle of inclination thus aiding the operator in setting up controls for the vehicle. The approach relies on multiple 5×5 masks to actively predict staircase from the front then by a combination of blob detecting algorithms predict the angle of inclination. One of the challenges was to make the algorithm efficient so that it can be implemented on low power embedded systems. Results of simulations on various acquired images have been discussed within the contents of the paper. The results have been validated by monitoring values over multiple & different staircases. MATLAB's image processing toolbox has been used to conduct simulations of the algorithm.

A hybrid relaying protocol is proposed in this paper for cognitive radio networks (CRNs) under random jamming attacks of impulsive noise nature. The protocol switches between amplify-and-forward, decode-and-forward or a no-send state depending on the calculated value of the log-likelihood ratio (LLR) of the received signal at each of the randomly distributed cognitive radio (CR) nodes. A LLR-based spectrum sensing scheme is also proposed. Channel estimation is carried out using the sign algorithm (SA). Performance is evaluated in terms of BER and normalized mean squared (MSE) error curves.

An application of auto calibration and linearization algorithms designed for correcting acoustic characteristics of selected computer devices was presented in the paper. The functionality of the algorithms were presented for two kind of computer devices: ultrabook class computer and portable device of All-In-One type. The algorithms were adjusted for the given type of the device on the basis of series of measurements conducted on several samples of such type of devices. The key details of the algorithms were presented and illustrated by a practical implementation. The essential improvement of the shape of the amplitude characteristic of loudspeakers built in the devices was confirmed by objective measurements. The presented methodology can also be applied for correction of the acoustic path of other kind of mobile devices.

The paper presents implementation aspects of real time speaker recognition from Internet radio broadcasts. The proposed solution is based on the free and open source Python development tools. The prepared software was tested with the Windows environment and then adapted to the Unix operating system running on the Raspberry Pi platform. We show what libraries are most convenient in order to implement individual blocks of the speaker recognition algorithm. In the paper we also indicate parameters, for which the algorithm exhibits the greatest efficiency. The prepared software is available on the Github file repository.

Summary form only given. The military has used infrared thermal imaging cameras for many years as a way to see better on the battlefield at night and through smoke. The cores of the thermal cameras have been coming down in prices over the past few years. Now this technology can be used in a wide variety of applications. Thermal camera's cores are designed for easy and efficient integration into higher level assemblies and platforms. This tutorial is made to show present possibilities of fascinating thermal imaging and what is the future of this technology.

The paper is dedicated to a new method of ship's resistance prediction using Artificial Neural Network (ANN). In the initial stage selected ships parameters are prepared to be used as a training and validation sets. Next step is to verify several network structures and to determine parameters with the highest influence on the result resistance. Finally, other parameters expected to impact the resistance are proposed. The research utilizes parameters of 7 already built off-shore vessels, with model parameters available as a result of tests conducted on European towing tanks. Thus, the reference is used to assess ship resistance prediction with the artificial neural network approach.
