The Keyworker Scheme was introduced to Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) to aid development of rehabilitative culture; promoting constructive relationships between individuals in prison and prison officers. The current research analysed eight participants’ experiences using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Three superordinate themes (and subordinate themes) were identified to understand the experiences of men in prison, which were: (a) It’s Personalised (i) Not just a prisoner, (ii) Professional line (iii) Us and Them (b); Provides support (i) Things are dealt with (ii) being heard (iii) Go out their way; (c) Depends on individual differences (i) Works better for some (ii) Staff have a massive impact (iii) Your business. Implications to help inform keyworker scheme developments are discussed.

Rapid Evidence Assessment: What works in media campaigns to engage and effect positive change in perpetrators of intimate partner violence?

This Rapid Evidence Assessment (REA) was developed in the context of the implementation of the Violence Against Women, Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence Act (VAWDASV; Wales) 2015. It specifically supports the achievement of objective three of the Welsh Government’s strategy; Increased focus on holding perpetrators to account and provide opportunities to change their behaviour based around victim safety. It also has implications for similar strategies across the UK nations. The REA outlines the published review findings to-date in addressing the research question: ‘what works in media campaigns to engage and effect positive change in perpetrators of intimate partner violence?’ It introduces the rationale for the research question and current issues in tackling this phenomenon, before discussing implications for the VAWDASV and similar strategies, in addressing Intimate partner Violence. The REA methodology is outlined and a summary of the findings and conclusions are presented. Ten papers were selected for the review according to the inclusion/exclusion criteria. Six clear themes emerged: (1) Campaigns should be realistic and relatable: (2) campaigns should use a variety of methods and products to reach a wide target audience; (3) the target audience should be carefully recruited and involved in the continuous evaluation of the campaign; (4) campaigns should be theoretically driven by the Transtheoretical (stages of change) Model, Protection Motivation Theory (PMT) and Motivational Interviewing; (5) resources should be carefully selected to ensure campaigns are effective, accessible, run by trained professionals, and clearly signposted; and (6) campaigns should avoid using stereotypical gender images and attitudes. The REA presents clear themes which can be practically implemented in the development of campaigns to effectively engage perpetrators of intimate partner violence, and encourage them to abstain from using associated behaviours.

The Good Lives Model is a well-established framework for addressing criminal behaviour. Whilst its empirical basis is widely understood, its practical application to forensic services is less well established. The current literature review aims to summarise how the model has been utilised to date with varying offender populations, and provide recommendation for developing its application in practice.

The long-term psychological effects of parental alienation during childhood
Pub Date : 2022-04-01 DOI: 10.53841/bpsfu.2022.1.140.37

Parental alienation, thought to be a form of emotional abuse stemming from parental conflict, remains to be a relatively poorly understood construct. Specifically, the long-term psychological impact of experiencing parental alienation have to date not been investigated in great detail. The present study aimed to examine the long-term effects of experiencing parental alienation during childhood. Here we investigated the role of parental alienation experience in measures of self-sufficiency, depression, attachment, self-esteem and anxiety. Findings indicate a strong association between parental alienation and anxiety, offering support to previous descriptions of parental alienation as a syndrome and providing an important basis on which to build future investigations into the lasting effects of this understudied childhood experience.

This paper looks to review the literature surrounding ‘What Works’ with women who are in, or at risk of entering the Criminal Justice System (CJS) and what approach practitioners should take to working with these women. The literature highlights the differing needs and complexities of women compared to their male counterparts. The importance of adopting a gender-responsive and trauma-informed approach to working with women is discussed. The literature surrounding effective interventions and the importance of promoting a positive self-identity are also reviewed along with the importance of staff wellbeing and resilience to effective practice. Recommendations for training of practitioners working with women who are in, or at risk of entering the CJS are made.

Enabling effective probation practice using complementary digital media

This article provides an overview of a recent pilot evaluation of the Skills for Relationships Toolkit (referred to below simply as ‘the toolkit’) (Morris et al., 2021). The toolkit is a technological adjunct designed to support probation practitioners to have conversations that promote positive relationship behaviour. This article provides a brief overview of pilot findings for the toolkit with a summary of the co-production work that underpinned its development. The article also highlights how the toolkit content was re-purposed during the Covid-19 pandemic before signposting future opportunities for digital approaches in supporting desistance. This article has been adapted from a presentation delivered by the author at the 4th European Conference of Domestic Violence in September 2021
