Native and Indigenous students in low SES urban, rural, and reservation areas have the lowest retention-to-graduation rate and college completion rate of any demographic in the United States. The primary contributing factor is lack of culturally relevant curricula in a culturally sustaining pedagogy to present their culture in a positive representation. The second contributing factor is a lack of access to computer and internet resources to foster and bolster online, remote, and distance learning.

Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the mental health profession has shifted to online service provision, or telehealth. The aim of this chapter is to describe the COVID-19 crisis and subsequent changes that occurred to mental health service provision; the benefits and drawbacks to telehealth from practical, ethical, and cultural perspectives; and the learning opportunities that have come from this crisis. Finally, reflections on the future of the counseling profession and trends in service provision for serving an increasingly diverse population will be analyzed.

This chapter investigates the constraints impact on the creativity of millennial preservice teachers when captioning a New Yorker Magazine cartoon. According to research, millennials have a decreased capacity for unique ideas, synthesis, articulation, and open-mindedness, which limits their ability to function in a diverse world. The study examined the topic using the constraint-based model of novelty (C-BMN; creativity problem, constraints, variability, and problem spaces) as a framework, as well as the new rubric, which assessed data on the impact of constraints on creativity among 90 millennial PST. Inferential statistics were used to compare differences in creativity, and the results indicated a statistically significant difference in total caption creativity between the experimental and control groups. The study corroborated previous research, concluding that constraints foster creativity. The findings of this study have implications for stakeholders interested in incorporating constraint-based strategies to increase cognitive diversity.

Around the country, school systems are trying to navigate through the ever-changing impact COVID-19 has caused. School districts scramble to equip teachers and students with technology as the world transitions to a mostly virtual setting. This document gives an overview of challenges educators encountered shifting from traditional face-to-face learning to virtual learning. This chapter also analyzes how differentiation and the use of multiple communication platforms help to address equity and diversity in the virtual setting.

This chapter investigates the hypothesis that the COVID-19 pandemic was the perfect storm due to the misalignment of competing elements of the US healthcare system, the economic commoditization of disease, the economic commoditization of healthcare delivery, and inadequate data to inform medical decision making on a mass scale. The culmination of a decades-long devolution away from patient care to healthcare or more appropriately sick-care created a system that was unable to quickly find the common ground needed to deal with the pandemic known as COVID-19.

Providing telehealth is often a means to increase the accessibility to and availability of clinical mental healthcare services. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, telehealth has been globally implemented into healthcare systems. Today, almost 390 million individuals have at least one mental illness. There are many challenges to seeking clinical mental healthcare, including availability and accessibility, anonymity, finances and insurance, stigma, and travel and transportation. Due to these barriers, many individuals have untreated mental health conditions, which can burden healthcare systems. By utilizing innovative delivery models such as telehealth technologies, the disparities experienced by individuals when attempting to seek clinical mental healthcare services can decrease.

This chapter addresses intersecting challenges faced by rural college students as online learning becomes more widespread. The chapter begins by discussing the ways in which geography—specifically access to campuses and broadband—can impact rural student inclusivity. It then discusses the multifaceted challenges of rural students, whose disproportionate rates of class disparity and mental health issues can amount to personal crises during the semester. Because the boundaries between personal and academic life are less clear when taking classes from home, students may find that online learning is more difficult than traditional face-to-face classes. Therefore, the chapter offers some suggestions for professors related to simplicity and transparency. It then describes creative, flexible, and empathetic ways of approaching course construction in synchronous online courses. Finally, it offers broader suggestions for decision makers in order to maximize equity and inclusivity moving forward, as synchronous online learning becomes more normalized.

This chapter is written by a second-grade teacher who gives a personal account for remote teaching during quarantine and the 2020 - 2021 school year. The equity and diversity of various situations involved during the past year are discussed throughout the chapter: from the beginning of quarantine 2020 to the end of the school year in May 2021. Remote teaching, social and emotional factors, and the diversity of families are also addressed. The chapter is dedicated to Jordan Lea Darnell, a teacher who lost her battle to COVID-19 in the Spring of 2021.

Overcoming diversity and equity challenges in healthcare is no small feat for healthcare facilities, professionals, and the healthcare industry at large. This chapter will bring awareness to healthcare disparities that transpire because of the lack of equity which can occur when diversity is finite. It will identify and explore how diversity and equity have been omitted from medical facilities and look at the impact of the presence of diversity and equity on both consumers and medical personnel. In addition, it will uncover factors that contribute to negative outcomes at the virtual level and uncover ways to reduce inefficiencies and negative outcomes caused by the lack of diversity and equity in healthcare.

The purpose of this chapter is to reflect on and respond to the work done by the authors of the subsequent chapters. The experiences and work of the contributors of this book highlight the general skills necessary for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and affirm the premises of DEI work. The chapters also include innovative ideas that can increase engagement with the DEI agenda. Finally, the chapters provide some exciting possibilities on how the digital world can further the current DEI discourse.
