Apres une introduction sur le projet intellectuel et theorique de Claude Levi-Strauss, l'A. montre comment les differents moments de son approche conditionnent sa pensee sur la musique. Il examine ensuite si l'analogie structurale etablie par Levi-Strauss entre mythe et musique est pertinente. Il discute ensuite deux exemples d'analyses musicales effectuees par Levi-Straus - l'etude sur le Bolero de M. Ravel et l'etude sur Castor et Pollux de J.-P. L'A. explore la question de la forme musicale et du contenu expressif dans le roman de Jane Austen Sense & Sensibility, dans son adaptation cinematographique de Ang Lee (1995) et dans la partition musicale du film composee par Patrick Doyle. L'examen de la composition musicale montre comment, dans la musique de film, les preoccupations esthetiques formelles se heurtent de facon aigue aux exigences du contenu. Afin de mettre en evidence les implications de la musique dans le film, l'A. examine quelques conventions de forme musicale, ainsi que le contexte litteraire de la nouvelle de J. Austen. Il interprete les themes et les procedures formelles, tant narratives que musicales, comme historiquement contingents, n'engendrant pas de relation causale, c'est-a-dire comme le resultat d'une esthetique particuliere predominante, mais pouvant subir un mouvement de transformation

Le theoricien tcheque Antoine Reicha (1770-1836) fut le premier a formaliser de facon coherente le concept de dialogue comme metaphore de l'interaction instrumentale dans la musique classique. L'A. montre que son interpretation du concept de dialogue s'inscrivait dans les references du 18 eme siecle sur le dialogue instrumental et sur le duo dialogue d'opera, et qu'il sut utiliser de facon originale, precise et imaginative les ecrits non-musicaux. Apres l'examen des caracteristiques musicales assignees au dialogue instrumental aux 18 eme et debut du 19 eme siecles, l'A. explore la dette de A. Reicha envers la notion de dialogue (instrumental et vocal) de ces deux periodes, ainsi que son depassement par sa contribution theorique dans ses differents traites musicaux. Il demontre ensuite que le concept de dialogue de Reicha est applicable a l'analyse musicale pour la musique classique instrumentale a partir de l'examen d'un passage du premier mouvement du concerto pour piano n° 14 en Eb, K. 449 de W.A. Mozart.
