"Climate change effects are becoming increasingly noticeable especially in the dynamic and overcrowded city areas. The frequency of occurrence and ways of appearance of natural risks along with the negative effects of intensive economic activities, energy conventional production, unsustainable transportation and energy consumption determine increases in dysfunctions that must be managed by the local authorities in the long term. This study addresses climate change in relation to policy and regulatory framework for urban planning. The article portrays several climate change-related threats that usually occur in urban areas, which are emphasized in the scientific literature, but also exemplifies practical solutions formulated by planners in their strategy for sustainable urban development as counteracting the current specific threats. The selected case studies are the cities of Kraków in Poland and of Cluj-Napoca in Romania. Results of the literature review show that the main risks related to sustainability of the urban areas, as effects of the climate change and man-made actions, are correspondingly visible and addressed in the main strategic plans at the local level, adopted by the city authorities as practical measures and actions to be implemented by 2030 aiming to limit the effects of the climate changes that arise, as well as to limit the causes that generate these changes. By implementing the proposed measures and by achieving the objectives described in the presented action plans, both of the selected cities prove their engagement in the European mission of climate change adaptation and mitigation. The extent to which green infrastructure contributes to the sustainability of the urban ecosystem is determined by several factors, including its availability in quantity and quality. However, in many urban areas in Nigeria, very little research has been done to deepen understanding of the quality of green infrastructure and its determinants. This research investigated the public perception of urban green infrastructure (UGI) quality and the factors that influenced this in four major towns in Ebonyi State, Southeast Nigeria. A survey of 513 participants was conducted with the data analysed using descriptive and categorical regression analyses, Mann-Whitney U, and Kruskal-Wallis H Tests. The results revealed that many of the participants have regular contact with UGI mainly for enjoying nature and fresh air, and preferred trees and water features. It was also observed that 66% of the respondents felt that the quality of green infrastructure in their locations was generally good but relatively higher where they work or do business than where they live. Differences in perception of UGI quality were due to their level of education, town of location, and type of neighbourhood environment. The regression analysis revealed that the respondents’ level of education, age, and marital status had the most significant influence on their perception of UGI quality. This study implies that for a better understanding of the public perception of UGI quality and effective planning and provision of UGI the factors identified in this research should be given adequate consideration by urban planners and managers.

Regardless of the aim, all man-made actions within a given space and using the available resources have a positive or negative impact on the anthropogenic and natural environment, both individually and in relation to one another. To a certain extent, spatial planning regulations and policies aim to regulate the amplitude of this impact and diminish the prospective positive and negative externalities. A categorisation of externalities was proposed in relation to spatial planning and spatial policy, real estate management, natural, environmental and agricultural conditions, and technical infrastructure. The assessment of particular externalities was based on integrated governance consisting of partial governance frameworks: economic governance, institutional and political governance, spatial governance, social governance, and environmental governance. The Delphi method was employed to evaluate externalities, by putting together a team of 12 spatial management experts. The methodological assumptions required adopting a definition of externalities and their features. Also, an in-depth analysis was conducted on the relationships and effects of activities carried out by entities operating in specific conditions and within the framework of social, economic and spatial policies. We considered the necessary assumptions aimed to explicitly define positive and negative externalities in spatial management, which was a difficult undertaking because of the particularities of cost-related and external benefits. A comprehensive list was created, relevant to the adopted classification of externalities. The conclusions provide recommendations for sectoral policies and advance further research directions.

Nature-based solutions (NbS) are innovative approaches oriented to address societal and environmental challenges. Increasing the interest to implement NbS in cities is strongly connected with their inclusion as potential measures in urban planning. The aim of our article was to assess the inclusion of NbS in Romanian urban development strategies. We used an evaluation matrix to systematically extract data from 249 urban development strategies. Using content analysis, we assessed the level of inclusion of NbS in different sections of the strategies. Only 10% of urban strategies include different aspects related to NbS concepts, while 40% of the documents are linking NbS to objectives. More than a third of the documents focused on the creation, modernization and maintenance of green areas meanwhile ecosystem services were not presented as specific benefits. This scarce presence of NbS in urban strategies warns about limited consideration of innovative approaches in urban planning, which could influence the capacity of Romanian cities to handle climate changes and to become more sustainable, resilient, and equitable.

"The expansion of urban land in Latin American cities has been extensive over the last 30 years. Urbanisation has grown considerably, and, according to the United Nations, it is expected that approximately 70% of the population will live in large cities by the year 2050. This process leads to more complex urban relations, more intense suburbanisation, larger settlements in the peripheral areas of cities and, subsequently, a significant reduction of urban green infrastructure. The aim of this paper is to assess whether the expansion areas defined in different planning instruments generate urban inclusion and are aligned with the already consolidated urban area. The case study areas are represented by the municipalities of Chía and Cajicá in the northern suburbs of Bogotá city, which have a strong integration with the central city. The methodology integrates data from municipal land use plans and the spatial syntax method to visualise the effect of expansion on urban morphology. The results obtained show that Chía presents an area of greater integration than Cajicá, specifically the centre of the municipality, in which there is a high level of functionality with respect to the new expansion areas defined in the Master Plan. This study concludes that the new expansion areas should be developed on the central axes, where the highest integration values are located, and at a greater distance from natural elements such as rivers. Finally, the methodological approach can be replicated to analyse other urban areas and support decision-making on urban functionality and expansion.

Place is a holistic entity defined by meanings, spatial features, and attachments. The richness of meaning is considered in specific spatial and historical/cultural contexts and place, as the object of attachment, is a nurturing space. The articles in this Special Issue discuss how people create places through their diverse experiences, they show what theoretical and empirical information can help understand present attachments to community and places. In addition, these contributions underline that social and economic practices create meanings, validate identities and enable the construction of attachment, as they imply continuity with the past. As such, meanings and intentions, as well as people’s behaviours make up place and attachment to place, especially during territorial development challenges, both in historical time and at present. Out of the two main approaches to study place attachment – one supported by Psychology, with focus on the individuals and their emotions, and the other endorsed by Geography, with focus on place and its meanings – this Special Issue explores the latter, showing that research on the meanings of places should be added to the study of the strength of bonds between people and places in order to understand place attachment and its production.

This article is the result of a long-time research (entirely conducted with qualitative methods) on the Cluj-Napoca Jewish community. The research developed gradually: from a first stage, when I paid attention to the process of community cultural identity representation (searching for coagulation factors, definability criteria, as well as for interlocutors’ responses regarding their feeling of belonging to the Jewish community), to later stages, documenting life histories (as salvage ethnography was a necessity), to analysing migration in the post-1989 period and its consequences on Jewish residents in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. In all stages, the topic of place attachment was very much present in the interlocutors’ narratives and responses. The main goal of this article is to analyse the ways in which place attachment has a very important role in the process of the Jewish community construction and representation. Meanwhile, I explore the ways place attachment is defined by the community members, which are its characteristics and functional mechanisms. The methods engaged to approach these topics are participant observation, semi-structured interviews, life histories and content analysis.

Socialism created materially and discursively an ideological context (and then tradition) to control social space and implicitly people’s experiences in society and space. The aim of my research is to identify representations of the women’s roles in communist Romania, as these were constructed by propaganda in comics for communist pioneers and published in Cutezătorii [The Daring Ones] magazine (1967-1989). My research material is made of comics where Romanian communist pioneers appear as characters. I discuss gender representations using discourse analysis and critical visual analysis. I interpret these gender representations in relation with the socialist nation and place meanings, as constructed by the official discourse. My research explores the meanings of place and the attachments created, which rest on the respective meanings. I consider the role of this official discourse about place meanings in constructing students’ place attachments (i.e., readers of the respective magazine). I concluded that the egalitarian ideology of the communist regime did not affect the patriarchal and the engendered inequalities in the Romanian society because the paternalist communist state supported the patriarchal regime. Comics show a patriarchal society despite the communist propaganda about an egalitarian society. In addition, I showed how, in the analysed comics, which were part of the popular culture, nature- and culture-induced place attachment was influenced by a gendered socialisation with space.

This research examines challenges in collecting household solid waste in highly populated inaccessible neighbourhoods. The main question of the study is: to what extent does the built environment affect waste management processes? To answer this question, two major aspects were analyzed: traditional planning theories, relating to environmental and sustainable planning models, and the behavioural studies and their role in waste management. Based on these two aspects, further analysis was conducted on the interrelated impacts, both of which being discussed from two points of view; the first is the impact of urban texture, and the second is the sociocultural impact. The area under study is one of the oldest and largest informal settlements in Amman, the capital of Jordan. Results revealed that both the community and the government agencies must share the service areas. In addition, the municipality has to provide access to underserved people. This study is important since it brings valuable contribution to the scarce literature on the relationship between solid waste management and informal inaccessible settlements in Jordan and within the region.

This paper aims to reveal the process of adapting to a new environment and developing perceptions of the city of Lodz, Poland by its temporary users – exchange students, studying at the local university. The data analysed and interpreted here was collected during lectures and workshops on Mental Maps and Images in Geography conducted at the Faculty of Geographical Sciences, the University of Lodz, between 2021 and 2022, using sketch maps, photographic essays and digital story maps prepared by course participants. The study tests those tools’ usefulness in recognising the relationship between a person and the surrounding space. Results framed by the concept of three-folded spatiality show that during 3-4 months of their stay in Lodz, along everyday direct spatial experiences as well as indirect interactions with the city, when learning about it in the classroom, reading or talking to people, exchange students gain a wide understanding of Lodz, and the initial sense of alienation gives way to emotional reactions and place attachment. The research presented in this paper is framed by the cultural approach in urban geography making the concept of imagined and lived spaces central and in a wider perspective, using constructionist methodology in social sciences. It aims to follow patterns of transforming the new, undiscovered space into a set of individually experienced and defined places filled with the emotions of exchange students, evolving their new local identities and place attachment. The study can impact future local planning to maximise the exchange students’ satisfaction as agents of urban improvement.

The study tests those tools’ usefulness in recognising the relationship between a person and the surrounding space. Results framed by the concept of three-folded spatiality show that during 3-4 months of their stay in Lodz, along everyday direct spatial experiences as well as indirect interactions with the city, when learning about it in the classroom, reading or talking to people, exchange students gain a wide understanding of Lodz, and the initial sense of alienation gives way to emotional reactions and place attachment. The research presented in this paper is framed by the cultural approach in urban geography making the concept of imagined and lived spaces central and in a wider perspective, using constructionist methodology in social sciences. It aims to follow patterns of transforming the new, undiscovered space into a set of individually experienced and defined places filled with the emotions of exchange students, evolving their new local identities and place attachment. The study can impact future local planning to maximise the exchange students’ satisfaction as agents of urban improvement.","PeriodicalId":43343,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Settlements and Spatial Planning","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2022-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43795296","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
