IF 0.7 Q3 Psychology Pub Date : 2021-10-10 DOI: 10.1002/adsp.12114
Jillian M. Blueford, Charmayne R. Adams

As Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) endure losses throughout the life span, their grief can impede daily functioning and interactions. This is especially true for older individuals (age 65 and over) who have a history of losses and traumatic experiences. We describe BIPOC's common losses, along with practical implications for integrating grief counseling and trauma-informed principles.

This article examines how the trauma of historical and structural racism affects one's health and well‐being across the life span, specifically for African Americans identified as descendants of Africans enslaved in the United States (DAEUS). Counselors are provided with antiracist strategies to support the intersection of multiple social identities for DAEUS citizens in late adulthood disproportionately affected by COVID‐19.

The framework of intersectionality has become a mainstay of counseling research and practice, given its theoretical underpinnings in social justice (see Chan et al., 2018;Chan & Erby, 2018;Mitchell & Butler, 2021). Using the multicultural and social justice counseling competencies to decolonize counseling practice: The important roles of theory, power, and action. When being "essential" illuminates disparities: Counseling clients affected by COVID-19. The four articles in this special issue highlight timely topics on advancing the science and practice of counseling as a developmental approach. We conducted a phenomenological study with 35 women in a substance abuse treatment jail program about their lived experiences in preparing for reentry. The women addressed their past, the needs of their families, and education of criminal justice personnel, providers, and the whole citizenry. The women advocated for effective reentry practices.
