Often, I would sneakily call him after I was supposed to be in bed, and we would talk all night or until both of us fell asleep on the phone. DeShawn and I walked to and from school together every day. Because his house was on the way to Beaubien Junior High School on the Northwest side of Detroit, when we walked home from school I would usually stop by his house and hang out with him before I continued home. While hanging out, DeShawn would often lean on me and place his chin on the top of my head. Looking back on those moments, I realize that we would find a variety of creative ways to touch each other in sensual and sometimes erotic ways. I remember that once while we walked home on a cold snowy afternoon, my ski cap kept falling over my eyes. As Deshawn lifted the cap above my eyes, he looked at me and said, “You are so cute.” I have never forgotten that moment. Although I knew I liked guys, I never felt sexually attracted to DeShawn. Once in gym class when it was time for everyone to shower, I waited until he was out of the shower before I went in because I didn’t want us to see each other naked; I was not ready for that kind of mutual recognition. I don’t know if he had sexual feelings for me, but I don’t believe he was ever into guys, even if he was into me. F O R U M

“Every Nigga Is a Star”: A Critical Reflection on the Fifth Anniversary of Moonlight “每个黑鬼都是明星”:对《月光男孩》五周年的批判性反思

Barry Jenkins’s Moonlight opens with this refrain from the 1973 Boris Gardiner hit “Every Nigger Is a Star,”1 as Juan (played by AcademyAwardwinning Mahershala Ali) rolls up in a 1973 Chevrolet Impala Custom coupe. He is immediately met by two other Black men, one a drugdealing colleague and the other who is searching for a drug fix. The man asking for the drug hookup turns to Juan and compliments with conviction: “you know you my man, right Juan.” To which Juan replies, “this nigga.” (Every nigga is a star.) And this 1973 refrain and homage is not a coincidence, as 1973 marks a watershed moment where a record breaking four mayors in major cities were Black. And I highlight this moment not to romanticize the nature of politics as some space of administering Black people a “way in” or a way out of anti-Blackness, but rather to speak to the affective character of the moment of heightened Black ascendency. To envelope the story of Moonlight in this symbolic register is to position Juan, Paula, Little/ Black/Chiron, and every character as being as much stars in the rigorous living as Black, as those who live as stars in the spectacular sense. Jenkins’s coloring of this Floridian landscape of stars, and McCraney’s incorporation of “nigga” paints I N T R O D U C T I O N
