Non-European or ‘exotic’ plants became prestigious collectable items in the early nineteenth century. Although unpaid collectors contributed greatly to the discovery of new plants, systematic sponsored collecting became increasingly important after 1800 in Britain. While sharing features of natural history collecting, the organization and sponsorship of exotic plant collecting in the first half of the nineteenth century in Britain exhibits several distinctive features, notably the involvement of commercial sponsors and cooperation between commercial and scientific bodies. Using the Directors’ Correspondence of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, this article describes how individuals, consortia of sponsors and subscription systems assembled finance for plant collecting. The article demonstrates the extent to which plant introductions depended on a structured trade in plants, in which commercial nurseries played a central role. Plant collecting must be understood as an episode not only in the history of garden design, but also in the history of collections.

This paper critically examines the possibilities of using the British Museum’s collection database as a research tool to examine acquisition history. It publishes initial findings from the author’s research into the history of the collection through a quantitative analysis of collection data. Rather than focusing on individual collectors, collections or areas of the collection, it takes a high-level comprehensive view of the current body of material, across time, departments and material. The paper asks three questions of the database: when did objects enter the museum’s collection, from whom and how? Through a numerical analysis, acquisition patterns are revealed which both challenge and augment our understanding of the history of the collection.

The visit by A. W. Franks of the British Museum to the Irish Industrial Exhibition in Dublin in 1853 gave him the opportunity to assess the holdings of Irish antiquarian material displayed there. This soon led to purchases for the museum. The collections that most interested him are discussed here, along with another, long known to William Ridgeway, who eventually bought it on behalf of the Cambridge Antiquarian Society.
