Visually impaired or blind people are someone who lost their ability to see. They usually depend on guide cane or guide dog to assist them navigates their environment. However, guide cane requires the blind to scan the surrounding manually with their hand while guide dog is expensive and has a short life span. There are many researches on creating better navigation aid for blind people. Instead of using vibration or alarm to notify the distance of the obstacles, this research proposed the application of sound notification for the blind. This system is developed using MATLAB r2010a with the integrated webcam of the laptop and a laser pointer. The laser pointer acts as a reference point so that object's distance can be calculated from the captured image by the webcam. This system manages to calculate distance for any color of object under any level of brightness condition during day and night time. It also possesses human head movement ability to turn left and right, up and down. This system managed to detect the obstacles up to a distance of 432 centimeters, which is sufficient to prevent the blind from bumping into the obstacles. The calculated distance is then converted to sound in order to notify the blind how far the object is away from them.

A digital signal processor (DSP)-based cross-coupled intelligent complementary sliding mode control (ICSMC) system is proposed in this study for the synchronous control of a dual linear motors servo system. The dual linear motors servo system with two parallel permanent magnet linear synchronous motors (PMLSMs) is installed in a gantry position stage. The dynamic model of single-axis motion control system with a lumped uncertainty, which comprises parameter variations, external disturbances and nonlinear friction force, is introduced first. Then, to achieve an accurate trajectory tracking performance with robustness, a cross-coupled ICSMC is developed. In this approach, a Takagi-Sugeno-Kang type fuzzy neural network (TSKFNN) estimator with accurate approximation capability is implemented to estimate the lumped uncertainty. Moreover, since a cross-coupled technology is incorporated into the proposed intelligent control scheme for the gantry position stage, both the position tracking error and synchronous error of the dual linear motors will converge to zero simultaneously. Finally, some experimental results are illustrated to show the validity of the proposed control approach.

An interception study of man-made forest was carried out in Bukit Lagong Reserved Forest. Out of 18 rainfall event recorded, all 18 events produce throughfall but only 15 events with measured stemflow. Two plots of 20m × 20m each were established to measure the distribution of interception (gross rainfall, Pg, throughfall, Tf and stemflow, Sf) and identify the percentage of forest canopy cover over the plotted area. Hemispherical photography method using fisheye lens was applied to capture canopy cover image over the plots. The forest plots were occupied with mixed dipterocarp trees consist of two canopy levels with 90% to 98% of canopy cover. The range of interception loss for this study is 1% to 73% with average of 30% of total gross rainfall. The relationship between interception loss and gross rainfall show a moderate correlation with r2 values of 0.3002. The canopy cover does impose significant effect to the loss of rainfall interception. From point-correlation, the interception loss (%) is increase proportionally to the canopy cover (%) with r2 values of 0.4559.

Recently, the numbers of cars have been increased collateral with the economic growth and the needs of living. Parking problem is one of the crucial problems that we have to face in the overcrowding area. Campus area faced the same problem where the parking spaces are very limited to the staff, students and visitors. Therefore, we proposed a basic mathematical model to make an improvement on the number of parking spaces as maximum as possible. We considered three types of parking designs which are perpendicular parking, parallel parking and diagonal (angle) parking where each design proposed a basic mathematical algorithm respectively. By comparing these three different designs, the most suitable design for certain area at Dataran Mawar, UiTM Shah Alam is identified and the maximum numbers of parking spaces are obtained when the selected designs are combined. These algorithms can be used as an alternative model in optimizing the parking spaces in other congested area.

Electronic banking channels are playing an increasingly significant role in the financial sector particularly with regards to online transactions. However, there are some segments of bank customers who prefer to conduct their banking transactions the tradition way because of security and trust aspects. No doubt for the younger generation who are technology savvy, the use of e-banking facilities are beneficial to them as time and effort are saved. But there is an increasing concern by the banks' administrators as not all the customers are into online banking and this study is significant because of the need to know the factors which contribute to the e-banking usage. Therefore, this study was proposed firstly to determine the highest contributor among computer self-efficacy, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use and security with usage of e-banking. Then, the second objective is to study the relationship between computer self-efficacy and usage of e-banking facilities. Last but not least is to compare the level of perceived ease of use of e-banking facilities among genders. The researchers are using probability and non probability sampling technique as well as face-to-face method for distributing questionnaires to the respondents. From the findings of this study, it was found that computer self-efficacy is the highest contributor among the factors that lead to the usage of e-banking. Meanwhile, the other factors are also influencing towards the usage of e-banking facilities. This study has identified the factors which have a say can influence the urban dwellers in Shah Alam to utilize the e-banking facilities.

Normally pineapple index 2 are harvesting for canning process. Pineapple waste is a by-product from the pineapple canning processing that will lead to serious environmental pollution. Some of pineapple waste is used for animal feed but it is still under utilized. Pineapple waste contains valuable nutrient component of simple sugar such as sucrose, glucose and fructose. Analysis of physico-chemical properties is an important data for determination achievable basic requirement to produce beverage or to run other process such as alcoholic and acetic acid fermentations for producing vinegar. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of maturity of pineapple variety N36 on its waste physico-chemical properties. The selected pineapple wastes such as peel, crown and core were used to produce pineapple waste extracts. Significant difference at p<0.05 found between total soluble solid (TSS), pulp, absorbance, pH, titratable acidity and TSS/TA ratio among index of maturity. It was found that pineapple core extract contains significantly highest in fructose, glucose and sucrose compared to pineapple crown and peel extracts.

This paper proposed a modified procedure of fuzzy LinPrera by adapting the Centroid method to defuzzify the final results into crisp values that best represents the whole set of fuzzy numbers. It is known that average is not suitable to use as a defuzzification method because it cannot represent the whole set of the fuzzy numbers and not consider the height of the membership function. By utilization of Centroid method, the defuzzification of fuzzy numbers can be done efficiently and the ranking process can be easily carried out. This modified procedure is adapted to the selection of best study mode offered by Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) for working people in order to demonstrate the calculations and obtain the final results. This study reveals that the Centroid method in Fuzzy LinPrera procedure is effective and suitable to use as an alternative tool in solving MCDM problems.

In this work, extraction of the oleic acid from the palm pressed fiber using supercritical carbon dioxide was studied at conditions of temperatures from 313.15 to 353.15 K and at pressures from 60 to 120 bars. Residual fibers from palm oil production contain more than 5% of the palm oil, which is a good source of oleic acid. The activity coefficients for both of solvent and solute were predicted based on the universal functional activity coefficient (UNIFAC). The parameters such as adsorption, diffusion, solubility, and desorption were determined using mass transfer modeling; these parameters are necessary for the optimization and scale-up of a supercritical extraction unit.

The Antarctic Treaty 1959 is the body that governs the Antarctic continent which plays an important role of preserving Antarctica's pristine environment. The Antarctic Treaty utilizes several environmental agreements namely Madrid Protocol to minimize the negative impacts of activities in the icy continent. Malaysia has been continuously expanding the Antarctic based research executed by local scientists since 1980s. Furthermore, Malaysia has officially joined the force in preserving the Antarctica's environment in 2011 by acceding the Antarctic Treaty and the Madrid Protocol. Thus, persistent efforts have been carried out in developing Malaysia's Antarctic Act to comply with both the Antarctic Treaty and the Madrid Protocol.

Access control is a system which enables the authority to control and restrict access to a target sensitive or secured area. However, its effectiveness is highly dependent on the proper usage of the system by those who are granted access. These authorized personnel have total control of the door from the time it unlocks until it relocks again. One of the biggest weaknesses of automated access control is the lacked of a system to prevent a practice known as “tailgating” or “piggybacking”. This paper presents a low cost solution to this problem by using a single internet protocol camera and an embedded based control unit combining with video analytics technology. Results showed that the developed system is able to detect various tailgating/piggybacking violations successfully.

Results showed that the developed system is able to detect various tailgating/piggybacking violations successfully.","PeriodicalId":444674,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Colloquium on Humanities, Science and Engineering (CHUSER)","volume":"37 9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132890955","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
