Abstract:Grenzenlos Deutsch (GD) is an open educational resource (OER) that functions as a digital archive. Considerations of equity, social justice, and accessibility inform decision-making and workflow at all stages of fashioning the GD curriculum as a no-cost alternative to traditional beginning German textbooks. In this essay, six members of the GD team reflect on digital curation, considering how the team’s collective identities, values, and instructional goals intersect with the processes of creating and curating the curriculum, particularly the production and preservation of audiovisual material such as images, interviews, and videos as learning objects. Although these learning objects constitute a public archive, they also mark events of personal and collaborative significance in the private and professional lives of the GD collective, whose members played varying roles in producing these instructional materials.

Abstract:In this forum contribution, the authors reflect on the founding of the Diversity, Decolonization, and the German Curriculum (DDGC) scholarly collective by considering the important role of digital venues in this endeavour. Drawing on the work of Sara Ahmed, the authors consider the individual constitutive spaces in which knowledge is created and circulated by the members of the collective as digital misfit archives. Such archives contain information unwelcome in official academic sites such as conferences and journals and are designed to centre the perspective of scholars structurally marginalized by the academy.

Abstract:The volume of information circulating online has become so large that it overwhelms the human capacity to comprehend it. Although algorithms and digital tools may be necessary simply to cope with the flow of data, people still need to learn how to select, use, and interpret the digital material available to them; in short, they need to adopt some of the principles of curation to contend with the information overflow. Educators, whose work as teachers makes them natural curators, have a critical role to play in helping learners develop their curation skills.

Abstract:The following article discusses Regina Scheer's novel Machandel (2014) and the approach to personal memory and historical perception that Scheer develops by drawing on Walter Benjamin's famous essay On the Concepts of History, published in 1940. The article examines formal and narrative aspects of the novel, which tells the story of a family and an East German village from the 1930s until the present day, in order to demonstrate how Scheer rejects the possibility of direct access to history and the reconstruction of the past. Special attention is devoted to the specific meanings of different forms of silence and the role of literature in the process of cultural memory.

Abstract:Elfriede Jelinek's postdramatic stage essay Rein Gold (2012) interweaves countless texts including Richard Wagner's operas from the Ring cycle, Karl Marx's The Capital, and Marx and Friedrich Engels's The Communist Manifesto as well as contemporary writings and news articles. Scholarship has so far examined the play in comparison to Wagner's Rheingold opera, which serves as the base for the dialogue between the father Wotan and daughter Brünnhilde. This article examines intertextualities with the story of the National Socialist Underground, an extremist right-wing group that committed hate-crime murders and bank robberies, and with the exploitative history of workers, particularly women, in capitalist systems. Jelinek compares the National Socialist Underground's attempt to violently rid Germany of non-ethnic Germans with Siegfried's mythical fight as dragon slayer in the Nibelungenlied that created a hero who has been cast as a German identity figure for an ethnonational narrative and fascist ideas in twenty-first-century Germany.
