Formation and interactive structure of regional technology clusters. The example of nanotechnology in Saarland and Berlin-Brandenburg. The article shows that the structure and the dynamics of spatial business concentrations are determined by the way they emerge. In detail, two types of spatial concentrations will be distinguished: Start-up-clusters that can be traced back to spin-offs out of one incubator and unrelated spatial concentrations owing their existence to learning processes, relocations and independent firm foundations. In its empirical part the study is focused on emerging spatial concentrations in the field of nanotechnology in the Saarland and in Berlin-Brandenburg.

Structural change under conditions of shrinking in the Ruhr area. The challenge of patchwork- management. Structural change in the Ruhr area is taking place under conditions of economic and demographic shrinking as well as suburbanization. This dynamic trend tends to result in a perforated urban structure with “holes” like brownfield sites, unused housing space and empty shops. Yet, the instruments that are used to manage the change were designed in times of economic growth. The paper argues that a new kind of patchwork management is needed, which aims to connect and integrate the more and more unconnected structures and functions of the urban mosaic. This challenge emerges at interregional, regional and local level, with the latter being at focus here. New phenomena, whether flagship projects or brownfields, have to be functionally linked to the local level and integrated in the nearby quarters. Similar challenges appear at regional and interregional level, where networking strategies rather than local competition are needed.

Migration between rural peripheral areas and urban central areas is analyzed using the city of Nairobi Kenya as an example. The study is based on official Kenyan data for 1969-1979. The role of Nairobi as a focal point for both centripetal and centrifugal migration is discussed and the volume intensity and direction of migration streams are examined. An attempt is also made to evaluate this migration in terms of modernization and dependency theories. (ANNOTATION)

(Post-)Constructivist perspectives in financial geography - introduction to the special issue. Economic activities in the financial sector are heavily dependent on social values, attitudes and routines. Recent advances in financial geography and neighbouring disciplines, most notably constructivist approaches, put forth remarkable achievements that improve our prospects in conceptualising the societal aspects of financial activities in general and financial places in specific. This editorial paper provides an overview on these advances and reflects on both the strength and weakness and the methodological foundations of constructivist approaches in studying financial geographies against the background of longer-term epistemological developments.
