ABSTRACT This study aimed to explore the challenges of professional social work practice in Bangladesh from the perspective of government social service providers. Based on the qualitative approach, the study findings highlighted that unfamiliarity with the social work discipline, lack of professional recognition, absence of specific employment for social work graduates, and limited understanding of social work among policymakers remain significant challenges for social work practice in Bangladesh. The paper advocates for concerted efforts by academicians, researchers, social service professionals and policymakers to overcome those challenges. The paper has insights for developing countries in addressing the challenges of professional social work practice.

ABSTRACT This study explores the defection background and experience of staying in a third country of an unaccompanied female adolescent North Korean refugee, ‘Mi-Hyang’, and the study investigates the human rights violations in the border area between North Korea and China. Qualitative research was conducted. The analysis focused on the significant events that influenced Mi-Hyang’s decision to defect and her eventual immigration to South Korea. Mi-Hyang’s story illustrates the phenomenon of the feminisation of survival, global care chains, and the human trafficking of minors. The results of the study help to understand the characteristics of unaccompanied female adolescent NKRs and provide primary data for preparing policies and services that support their resettlement in South Korea.

ABSTRACT Through the theoretical lens of bounded agency in the life course, this qualitative study explores Chinese rural-to-urban migrants’ experiences in pursuing future possibilities. Based on qualitative interviews with 42 migrants working in three cities of mainland China, the findings show that the participants seemed to regard starting a business as a ‘panacea’ that could ‘cure’ almost all the negative aspects of their lives as manual labourers. However, when discussing how to put this plan into practice, their agency was bounded by their disadvantages in social support, related knowledge and abilities, and entrepreneurial personality. The researchers conclude that it is better to understand doing business as a ‘stimulant’ that can provide migrants a spiritual respite from time to time in their frustrating lives, rather than a ‘panacea’ that can solve their practical problems. Some policy and practice suggestions have also been made to help rural-to-urban migrants achieve a better future.

ABSTRACT This article reports the results of a survey sent to 52 Filipino social workers to measure the level of their work-related quality of life (WRQOL). The results show that professionals who work in the private sector have a higher level of WRQOL than those who work in the government, and more autonomy in decision-making. Professionals with regular or permanent positions have also a higher level of WRQOL than those who work on contractual basis whether in the public or private sector. We conclude that work-related quality varies between the status of employment, stability in the workplace and professional autonomy.

ABSTRACT Adopting conventional content analysis, our article seeks to address advantages and disadvantages of online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic from perspectives of 186 social work students in an educational institution in Vietnam. Accordingly, though being appreciated mainly for its convenience in terms of travelling, time schedule and learning venue, online learning shows significant shortcomings regarding technical operation, interaction and learning effectiveness. ABSTRACT The janani surakhya yojana (JSY), a flagship programme of the national health mission (NHM), was implemented to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality by promoting institutional delivery among marginalised pregnant women in India. This study provides an account of the challenges faced by tribal pregnant women in accessing reproductive health care services. Primary data was collected from various maternal health stakeholders and expectant mothers using qualitative methods. The study adopted data collection methods like focus group discussions (FGDs) and in-depth interviews regarding the programme implementation of JSY at Jaleswar. Secondary data were analysed to understand the effectiveness of government policy in improving maternal health. The study indicates that despite an elaborate programme of action, there is low community perception and trust in bio-medical (mostly) procedures among the tribal population. The government programmes rarely compliment the tribal cultural construction of pregnancy and child birthing with existing medical and professional discourse.

ABSTRACT This study focuses on female self-employed workers in Japan, evaluating their position in the labour market and access to social protection. It also investigates the impact of the COVID-19 crisis and their responses to it. We find that female self-employed workers are in a better position than female employees working on non-standard contracts, with less gender disparity. However, they lack social protection against sudden income loss, which caused them more serious damage during the COVID-19 crisis. Although the segment is relatively free from gender discrimination, it cannot escape the gender biases embedded in the social security system.
