The Steri's prisons are to be investigated as a site of production of a peculiar religious culture: what kind of religiosity emerges, given the heterogeneous composition of the prison population? What religious practices (reciting the rosary, other prayers, lighting lamps, listening to mass celebrated in the corridors, etc.) take place in the cells? What kind of religious interaction take place between prisioners locked up in the same cell?. the "pictorial cycle" of cell no. 3 on the ground floor allows us to track down the iconographic model at play, identified as votive aediculae and the Via Crucis, as well as the authors' proximity-based iconic memory. But the drawings and graffiti are also linked through iconographic tradition to hagiography and theology, as emerges in the representation of the leviathan. In the reference to the harsh conditions of the prision one can read an implicit delegitimisation and criticism of the actions of a tribunal that does not consider this suffering to be sufficient punishment to merit forgiveness

There have been numerous case studies of prison graffiti produced in the Spanish Empire. Most publish archaeological finding; only a few approach them as historical testimony that may provide a series of information about those who produced them and the times they lived in. However, none have undertaken an overview covering all the territories held by the Spanish crown during the 16th-18th centuries. This paper aims to do by piecing together the evidence collected to date in order to draw some general conclusions about the reasons that drove prisioners to write and draw on the walls of their prisons

Genealogy as an auxiliary discipline of genetics. Beyond their historiographical interest, genealogical studies have long been attracting the interest of geneticist as they can provide emnpirical support or contribute to falsifying purely mathematical models of population dynamics. We briefly trace the history of the interactions between genealogy and genetics starting from the end of the XIX century, focusing in particular on matrimonial isonymy and on the distribution and disappearance of surnames. We analyze critically the theoretical models adopted, pointing at their conceptual limits, that history studies have allowed to identify. We then analyze some recent experiences and research proposals, in paricular the studies on the repetition of the ancestors (MRCA), carried out in vivo by exploring quantitatively the genealogically well-known complex constituted by the European nobility in the modern age.

One of the cells of Palazzo Chiaramonte Steri's prisons in Palermo still bears the marks of drawning decipting saints and martyrs accompanied by hand-written prayers and hymns in Latin. Interestingly, each single drawing is marked with a letter B. Acording to Giuseppe Pitre, these graffiti should be attributes to Francesco Baroniuo Manfredi, an erudite priest who was arrested by the Spanish Inquisition in 1467 after the revolt of Palermo. What are the reasons behind his arrest?. Why is he considered to be the author of graffiti depicting saints and martyrs? Starting from Pitre's hypothesis, I will investigate Baronio's past in order to understand the reasons for his imprisonment. At the same time, I intend to shed new light on the graffiti that the supposedly drew during his imprisonment
