The Maestrazgo is a karst aquifer of more than 2400 km2 that occupies the northern half of the province of Castellón. Its main discharge area is in the coastal sierra of Irta, between the towns of Alcocebre and Peñíscola. On the coastline of this carbonate elevation, there are several springs, permanent (Playa de las Fuentes Centro, Torre Badum y Font de Dins) and occasional (Playa del Carregador, Playa de las Fuentes Sur y Norte, Playa del Pebret y Playa del Russo), which can be grouped into different types depending on their chemical characteristics. This diversity is due to underground flow through preferential circulation conduits that may be more or less interconnected with each other and more or less affected by marine waters. Significant events of precipitation, on a local and / or regional scale, in addition to causing the appearance of occasional springs, temporarily modify the hydrochemistry of permanent upwellings. The springs of Playa de las Fuentes Centro, Torre Badum and Playa del Carregador rapidly reduce their saline content, while the springs of Playa de las Fuentes Sur, Playa del Pebret and Playa del Russo, respond with a piston effect and initially, the more saline waters that occupy the conduits of the environment near the springs are drained until they are replaced by those of a continental nature. Finally, the Font de Dins spring drains through channels without contact with marine waters, so it does not undergo notable alterations in its composition due to their influence, although its relationship with the detrital aquifer of Vinarós-Peñíscola alters its usual hydrochemistry.

Groundwater is a fundamental and strategic resource for water supply of coastal areas, especially in the Mediterranean basin where the irregularity of precipitation, both seasonally and year-on-year, put at risk the availability of surface water in the rivers, which go from being dry for long periods to causing torrential discharges. In particular, if the exploitation of coastal aquifers is not properly managed and the quality of groundwater is not monitored regularly, important sectors of the aquifer may be affected by saltwater intrusion, and cause the abandonment of the wells. Geophysical methods are a very effective complement to provide indirect information on groundwater salinity in areas of the aquifer where wells or piezometers are not available for sampling. This study presents the results obtained from the application of different geophysical methods in the coastal aquifer of Oued Laou (Morocco) as a complement to hydrochemical data. Four geophysical methods, two electrical: vertical electrical sounding and electrical resistivity tomography, and two electromagnetic: frequency domain EM and time domain EM sounding. The comparative analysis of the results obtained by each method has made it possible to assess the coherence and complementarity of each method, as well as their corresponding advantages and limitations in terms of resolution and cost-effectiveness.

Coastal aquifers are frequently complex systems with highly heterogeneous geological characteristics, specific flow patterns, presence of fluids with different densities, high risk of contamination both by salinization and by other pollutants, and highly modified by anthropic activity. Given this situation, numerical modeling becomes the most appropriate tool to determine the potential impact of global change on marine intrusion in this kind of aquifers. The mathematical models traditionally used in coastal aquifers have been those of flow and mass transport with variable density, which allow obtaining a distribution of salinities in the aquifer and reproducing the flow pattern in the area of discharge to the sea. In addition to these models, another type of numerical modeling can be applied that could also provide information on specific aspects of this type of aquifers. The study of the Motril-Salobreña coastal aquifer shows, for example, how heat transport models allow quantifying the recharge that occurs from rivers that frequently interact with coastal aquifers; as well as the age transport models provide data on the preferential groundwater circulation paths and its residence time, very relevant information in these frequently heterogeneous and anisotropic aquifers. Future challenges are directed towards determining the effects of sea level rise on marine intrusion and establishing the degree of equilibrium of the freshwater-saltwater contact with the current situation.

The studies investigating saltwater intrusion in Denmark have been reviewed to identify the main characteristics and features that have an impact on coastal aquifers interacting with the sea. Traditionally, in regions with wet climate, saltwater intrusion is not appointed as a frequent problem and it is more commonly linked to areas affected by water scarcity. Nevertheless, multiple factors that can induce the salinization of coastal aquifers have been found for Denmark such as the presence of coastal drained lowlands with the water table below the sea level or karstic features and buried valleys in carbonate and detrital systems respectively that can act as preferential flow paths for saline water. Eustatic changes have been also played an important role in the salinization of aquifers, in deep aquifers saline ancient connate water can be identified and in small islands, a delicate equilibrium of freshwater lenses is generated over saline water. As the water supply in this country depends almost exclusively on groundwater, saltwater intrusion can jeopardize fresh groundwater resources in coastal areas. An overview of the cases already studied, questions about the magnitude of these issues and the future perspectives with climate changes are discussed to put into context what is already known and what are the next challenges.

The southern portion of the Colangüil Batholith is formed by units of the Tocota Pluton, of Permian age, which intrude late Carboniferous-Permian (Asselian) sandstones. Sub-volcanic bodies with andesitic composition and tuffs of Cenozoic age, modern layers of piedmont sediments and both alluvial and glacier deposits also crop out. The region exhibits a set of metalliferous deposits (Cu-Au-As) and occasionally with bismuth. These are mostly filonian type. These are spatially associated with granodiorites, granite and sandstone. Their development is interpreted as belonging to the Gondwanan cycle. Within granitic rocks, mineralizations were formed between 139 ºC and about 400 °C, probably after the consolidation of the Tocota pluton and by the upward circulation of hydrothermal fluids, probably mixed with meteoric waters. In the host rock, mineralization occurred in an interval between 200
