The use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools, such as chatbots, has significantly increased in academia and research. The present study seeks to determine the key factors influencing chatbot adoption, as well as attempts to validate the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) in the context of AI chatbots adoption among research scholars. The data for this study were collected through purposive sampling using a cross-sectional survey. The population of the study comprised research scholars enrolled in three public sector universities in Pakistan. The eight-factor proposed measurement model was estimated using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) based on 30 valid items. The goodness of fit indices suggest a favourable fit for the model χ2 = 1.710, DF = 381; p = 0.000; IFI = .902; TLI = 0.886, CFI = 0.900, RMSEA = 0.056. Our research affirms that social influence, trust, and facilitating conditions play pivotal roles as primary predictors of behavioural intentions for AI chatbots adoption among scholars. The study suggests that the perceived risks associated with using AI chatbots due to their potential misuse can be minimized by effectively implementing AI user guidelines, and developing AI literacy among scholars. Information professionals and ethical libraries can play an important role in “building the bridge” between cutting-edge technology capabilities and information users’ needs and rights. The proposed eight-factor AI chatbots adoption model holds substantial potential in understanding the influence of performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, trust, perceived risk, and facilitating conditions on behavioural intention to AI chatbots adoption. This study contributes to the limited body of research investigating the factors influencing AI chatbot adoption among research scholars using the UTAUT model with additional constructs for trust and perceived risk.

Citation count is a mechanism for making scholarly impact assessments. The current study estimated the influences of publication year, authorship patterns, publishing outlets and use of methodologies on citation count. Citation analysis and content analysis are used to examine the differences between variables in the citation count. The current study used a sample of LIS articles published by Pakistani authors from 2001 to 2016. Content analysis is used to identify themes about the use of methodology. The authorship patterns, publishing channels and year of publication were quantified from the bibliometric data of articles. Citation scores were explored on Google Scholar. An independent sample t-test and an ANOVA were used for data analysis. The findings revealed that the publishing year has affected the citation count. The periods between 2001–2008 and 2013–2016 saw fewer citations for articles, while articles published from 2009 to 2012 had higher citation shares. Articles published by faculty and collaborated by two or more authors have significantly higher citations, but females have a slightly higher citation count. Articles published in impact factor journals, international journals and subscription journals have a higher citation count. Non-peer review journals have the lowest citation count. Empirical and quantitative methodology and inferential statistics have increased the citation score. Gaps in reporting methodology have reduced the citation score. Among the two types of methodological plurality, mixed-methods articles have significantly higher citations as compared to multi-methods articles. The current study is unique because it is a comprehensive analysis of the impact of social, academic and methodology factors on the citation count of entire LIS articles published from a developing country. It has identified positive and negative factors affecting citations, and these will be helpful for researchers, policymakers, institutions and journal publishers in planning quality research publishing.

This study uses structural equation modeling (SEM) (Smart PLS 3.0) to investigate the moderating effect of technological turbulence on the relationships between the e-marketing mix (4Ps) and customer satisfaction with e-information services provided by public university libraries in Jordan. Using an online survey with (792) postgraduate students who were chosen from a voluntary response sample. The study unveiled that various elements within the e-marketing mix significantly influence customer satisfaction with e-information services. The results of the study revealed significant positive relationships between e-product, e-pricing, and e-promotion with customer satisfaction (CSEIS). Additionally, there are significant negative relationships between e-place and CSEIS. the results highlighted the moderating role of technology turbulence in influencing these relationships. Specifically, technology turbulence negatively moderates e-product and e-place, while positively moderating e-pricing and e-promotion in their impact on CSEIS. All reported relationships are statistically significant based on the provided p-values, indicating the robustness of the observed effects.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 led to Europe’s largest displacement of people since World War II, with significant substantial numbers of Ukrainian refugees seeking shelter in neighbouring countries. International research attests to the crucial roles public libraries can play in the reception and integration of refugees. However, diverse professional and geographical contexts and sociopolitical landscapes in which libraries work to support refugee reception and integration processes, necessitate ongoing and renewed focus on the topic. Therefore, this study examines how public libraries in Hungary and Poland responded to the influx of Ukrainian refugees, investigating their roles, programmes and partnerships. Using mixed methods, the study analyses previously unexamined 2018 questionnaire results and conducts 12 subsequent interviews with library staff. Findings reveal that libraries addressed a spectrum of user needs falling into three broad phases. Initially, they focussed on primary needs during the first phase, transitioning to settlement-related needs in the second phase. Variances between Poland and Hungary emerged during this phase, with Hungary primarily serving transient refugees and those with Hungarian backgrounds, while Poland saw a higher number of refugees of Ukrainian background settling. In the final phase, libraries emphasized literacy, integration and cultural support, aligning with reading and collection-oriented services. Service provision was characterized by nontraditional services in the first phase, non-collection-oriented services in the second phase and collection-oriented services in the third phase, with information provision central to all three phases. The study underscores public libraries’ role in addressing community needs, rooted in their core values of inclusivity and community engagement. However, their effectiveness hinges on inclusion in community-level efforts, awareness among new groups and securing economic and political support. Further research is warranted to explore library services to refugees globally amid increasing global migration and to understand the experiences of refugees using library services.

Orientations to reference and information service are the values, attitudes, and beliefs that librarians have about reference work. These orientations reveal the cognitive and emotional aspects of the work to complement the behavioral aspects that have been extensively studied. In this Q methodology study, the orientations to reference and information service of 22 librarians in Lahore were studied. Librarians sorted statements about reference and information service and explained their rationale. Card sorts were analyzed statistically, and interviews provided qualitative data to interpret the quantitative findings. The orientations of these librarians include two strong service orientations—one focusing on providing information and the other on communicating well—an orientation focused on fostering user self-sufficiency, and a possible orientation on inspiring users. These orientations reflect to some extent the literature on reference and information service and previous studies of librarians conducted in other countries. The unique nuances of these orientations, however, demonstrate the importance of continuing to study the orientations of librarians in different regions and cultures. These findings have implications for research, LIS education, and practice relevant to scholars and practitioners in all countries.

This study investigates the state of alternative-academic careers (alt-ac) in Library and Information Science (LIS) within China, based on the transformation of the LIS academic market over a 5-year span (2018–2022). The study employs a unique dataset of job postings collected through first-hand field investigations and meticulous manual preprocessing. A comprehensive analysis of the dataset was conducted using a combination of the BERT-BiLSTM-CRF model for named entity recognition, social network analysis for examining interdisciplinary interactions, and descriptive statistics for characterizing the distribution and trends of alt-ac positions. The results reveal that alt-ac positions account for 48.3% of the total demand in the field, distributed across nine categories: academic research institutions, government departments, military organizations, public libraries, and others. Each category exhibits unique developmental patterns. Over 20 distinct alt-ac roles were identified, such as data librarians, competitive intelligence specialists, transformative OA agreement negotiators, and scholarly communication experts, highlighting the ongoing emergence of new positions in response to institutional evolution. Descriptive statistics showed that the demand for alt-ac positions was notably concentrated in economically advanced regions, with the East China region accounting for 32.58% of the total positions, surpassing the proportions in North China (26.22%) and South China (13.86%). Social network analysis revealed substantial interdisciplinary interactions between LIS and other areas, such as computer science and public administration, suggesting potential opportunities for collaboration and competition. The findings emphasize the growing significance of alt-ac in China’s LIS field and provide insights into the dynamic landscape of the academic job market, offering implications for LIS education and workforce development strategies.

Research productivity serves as a manifestation of faculty’s research achievements and reflects their research capabilities. This study focuses on the research productivity of library and information science faculty in selected North American universities. The primary objective is to explore the factors influencing research productivity, including academic degree, professional cadre, and educational background. Furthermore, this study proposes targeted suggestions to enhance faculty’s research productivity and optimize the research environment. The findings indicate significant variations in scientific research productivity among library and information science teachers in North America. Academic degree exerts a significant positive influence on research productivity, while professional cadre demonstrates a limited but positive impact. However, the effect of educational background on research productivity is not significant based on this study. This research provides valuable insights for the development of scientific research productivity in the field of library and information science.

The primary objective is to explore the factors influencing research productivity, including academic degree, professional cadre, and educational background. Furthermore, this study proposes targeted suggestions to enhance faculty’s research productivity and optimize the research environment. The findings indicate significant variations in scientific research productivity among library and information science teachers in North America. Academic degree exerts a significant positive influence on research productivity, while professional cadre demonstrates a limited but positive impact. However, the effect of educational background on research productivity is not significant based on this study. This study aims to contribute to the pertinent body of knowledge by examining the field of data literacy (DL) to better understand its trends and evolution, thematic clusters, relevant studies and the most productive authors and journals. The analysis of scientific literature indexed by Web of Science from 1980 to 2023 ( n = 1704 items) combined co-occurrence (using VOSviewer) and co-citation (using CiteSpace) techniques based on the words in the title and abstract, as well as the keywords, authors and journals. There is evidence of four main trend topics (Data Literacy, Statistical Literacy, Data-based assessment and e-society) and six thematic clusters (Data Literacy, Statistical Literacy, Quantitative Literacy, Big Data, Data Science and Quantitative Skills). With DL emerging in 2011, the research initially focused on both quantitative and statistical literacy, and later (2012–2016) shifted toward applying statistical literacy to various disciplines. Since 2018, the use of data has led to the emergence of fields like big data and data science, resulting in progress being made in data literacy. The combination of the two analysis techniques offers complementary perspectives: co-word analysis reveals fields of application, and co-citation analysis shows the internal evolution of the discipline. This study evidences a significant increase in publications on DL, indicating its expansion to several disciplines and a promising, yet uncertain, future.

Libraries and archives preserve websites and social media content with significant value as digital heritage with potential value for future digital scholarly research. This research investigates, from the practitioners’ perspective, the approaches and challenges the libraries and archives face in the curation process, from acquisition to preservation and provision of access to archive such digital content. Qualitative research was undertaken to explore the archiving practices through semi-structured interviews with 13 practitioners working in international libraries and archives at national and institutional levels across three continents. All interviews were coded and summarised in correspondence with the research questions. Findings revealed social media have more difficulties in archiving, where participants prefer to acquire less than websites. With the growing volume of data, participants emphasised sufficient planning and preservation actions to sustain future access and improve the discovery of archived digital content. Challenges were found in barriers to social media acquisition, lack of awareness, limited resources for preservation, uneven technical capacity, copyright and privacy concerns, and meeting user demands. Limited research has focused on digital curation concepts in archiving web and social media content, especially in Asia. This research suggested institutions formulate strategic planning and develop good Web and social media archiving practices from the practitioners’ perspective.

The objectives of the study were to identify the impact of augmented reality on libraries and reveal challenges to its adoption in library settings. The systematic literature review was used as research methodology to address the study’s objectives. The 25 most relevant research papers published in peer-reviewed journals were selected to conduct the study. Findings revealed that augmented reality has significant positive effects on user engagement, marker space innovations, experiential learning, efficient library management, and supportive role for librarians. Results also manifested that financial barriers, technological proficiency, technical support, and ethical considerations caused challenges for the adoption of augmented reality applications in libraries. The study has provided a framework to efficiently adopt augmented reality in libraries for the delivery of innovative services to library patrons.
