This study aimed at investigating into the bibliometric performance of the Journal of Library and Information Science (JOLIS) from 1991 to 2023. Data was extracted from Web of Science (WoS) and analyzed with Microsoft Excel 2016, VOSviewer 1,6,19,0, SPSS 27, SPSS Modeler and Tableau Public. The collaboration networks of active authors, contributing countries and productive institutions as well as the key-word co-occurrence network were depicted and visualized. Findings showed that out of 1794 documents published in JOLIS, research articles and book reviews were highly-produced items, respectively. Top productive countries were England and USA, respectively. The USA was the first-ranked country in making international collaboration. Top highly-ranked research institutes were Loughborough University and Sheffield University, respectively. Many highly-productive authors had no collaboration or low collaboration in the co-authorship network. Public libraries, academic libraries and information literacy were of most considerable subjects and higher education, information science, bibliometrics and open access were of hot topics. Data mining showed that the document type had the highest predicting effect on citation counts in JOLIS, followed by author numbers, being open access, having research funds and involving in an internal collaboration. In all, JOLIS has found its way in library and information field as a high prestige journal with its wide scope readers, authors and topics.

This study investigates the evolution and current status of subject librarianship in Chinese higher education spanning the past 25 years. Utilizing scientometric analysis, we construct knowledge graphs, encompassing publication trends, co-citation and co-occurrence networks, and the burstiness of keywords. The data are drawn from 504 articles in the Chinese Social Science Citation Index (CSSCI) database. The analysis sheds light on knowledge domains, evolutionary routes, and research hotspots within this field. The graphs delineate intricate connections among subject librarianship in Chinese higher education, involving universities, faculties, students, cooperative enterprises, and government. Significantly, these services play pivotal roles in information resource construction, scientific research, intellectual property support, and propaganda. The progression of subject librarianship in Chinese higher education is driven by innovations in information technology, user demands and policy advocacy. The knowledge graph-based exploration of subject librarianship holds substantial implications for libraries further constructions, particularly in enriching content and enhancing quality, aligning with the criteria of the new education public policy outlined by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China.

In this study, we investigated reader experiences on reading in VR. The study was conducted with undergraduate students ( N = 40) who read a chapter of the Turkish novel. In the four different groups read the same chapter of the novel in different formats: print, digital, audio, and VR. In this context, firstly we measured cognitive activities using EEG device while participants were reading. Secondly, they answered the questions about the recall of the details of the chapter they read and reading experiences in VR. Result of the research, we found that reading in VR had significantly higher levels of engagement and stress cognitive activity. E-book and VR experiences can increase the accurate recall of details more than printed books. In addition, VR can increase the comfort of the book reading experience by providing a personalized reading environment through the VR content that enables users to select their virtual environment.

The year 2020 saw the COVID-19 pandemic have a dramatic impact on life across the globe with all institutions having to react to changing circumstances. Public libraries were not exempt from this and found themselves needing to reconsider how they provided services during this time. A growing body of literature suggests that previous behaviour patterns were interrupted during the pandemic, with changes seen in the use of public library resources, and particularly greater use of digital. Although the publishing industry indicates an increase in audiobook use, there is limited research focussed specifically on library settings. This article investigates the provision and promotion of audiobooks in public libraries in England and Wales during the pandemic with a view to understanding both the changes seen in this area and to identify any learnings from this time that can be of benefit to public libraries in the future. A mixed methods research approach explored the views of public librarians on a variety of topics associated with audiobook usage, as well as investigating the impact and style of promotion activities on social media. Some surprising findings arose, including how limitations related to social media promotion of audiobooks were indicative of wider issues, and how questions around the future of audiobooks can shed light on what may be needed in the public library of tomorrow.

In the era of digital transformation, data literacy has emerged as a critical competency for organisations, driving a demand for skilled professionals. Despite a shortage of data-literate talent, universities struggle to align their curricula with industry needs, prompting a call for improved data literacy education. Recognising the contextual nuances of this skill set, a one-size-fits-all approach falls short. To address this gap, the authors advocate for a comprehensive exploration of perspectives from key stakeholders such as business advisors, students, teachers, and researchers. Understanding diverse needs and expectations of stakeholders is crucial in identifying deficiencies in data literacy education, paving the way for enhancements in university programmes. The reported study is the preliminary phase of a larger ongoing project in which grounded theory methodology is used to explore the question of ‘how can data literacy education be improved?’. The authors report on a small-scale study (eight interviews) aimed at exploring the perspectives on data literacy definition, competencies, and challenges with two representatives of each of four groups of stakeholders in data literacy education: students, business advisors, educators, and researchers. One common challenge identified among participants is the lack of data literacy and critical thinking skills, as well as a lack of awareness of the importance of data analysis. Although participants were aware that different businesses may need different data literacy skills, they were not able to articulate what those differences might be. The study underscores the need for the development of frameworks to help guide and advance data literacy education.

Research is crucial not only for the growth of a country but also for society as a whole, especially in a knowledge-based society. At each stage of research, scientists and researchers require support from various research stakeholders in the form of information resources and pertinent assistance. Consequently, academic libraries, as one of the most important stakeholders in research and the backbone of knowledge acquisition, storage, and dissemination processes, offer a variety of services to support research endeavors in their parent institutions. The current study classifies these services into eight major categories, viz. “Research Guides, Research Consultancy, Research Impact Measurement, Open Access, Research Tools Recommendation, Research Data Management (RDM), Scholarly Publishing, and Archiving and Preservation of Research Output (Article, Data, etc.).” The purpose of this study is to investigate the implementation status of these Research Support Services (RSS) in academic libraries of India (which include a total of 212 institutions, counting all of India’s “Central Universities (CUs)” (56) and “Institutes of National Importance (INIs)” (156) by referring to the related information provided on their respective library websites. The findings show that Indian academic libraries lack significant adoption and cognizance of research support services, and their implementation is in its infancy. The study reveals that very few academic libraries offer RDM services, whereas the vast majority of academic libraries provide recommendations for research tools. Indian academic libraries need to actively explore various RSS and make them a part of their core offerings. Additionally, they should look into novel ways to support researchers at different phases of their studies.

Generative AI products such as ChatGPT have changed the way people seek and obtain information. Users may gradually switch from search engines to generative AI for information seeking. This may lead to their defection from search services. Based on the push-pull-mooring (PPM) model, this research examined user switch intention from search engines to generative AI. The results indicated that low information-task fit and information overload lead to user dissatisfaction, whereas AI generated content (AIGC) information quality and perceived interactivity affect perceived value. Dissatisfaction, perceived value, and social influence determine user switch intention. The fsQCA identified three configurations leading to switch intention. The results suggest that search service providers need to enhance information-task fit and reduce information overload in order to retain users and achieve a sustainable development.
