Higher education students with a multilingual background are a small but growing group in Finnish-language degree programmes. In this article, we present the results of the first phase of our longitudinal study in which we use written descriptions and qualitative thematic analysis to examine these students’ experiences of coping in higher education in relation to their Finnish language skills. The data consist of the responses of 261 students to a web survey, with a focus on the students’ written descriptions of coping with their studies. Five main themes emerged in the data: 1) the overload caused by the feeling that studying takes a lot of time, 2) the independence of studying in academia and its consequences, 3) the effects of the progress of studies and the language proficiency level on the perceptions of coping, 4) comparing oneself to what we call here cis-speakers of Finnish language, and 5) the psychosocial burden of studying in Finnish. In addition, we present students’ experiences of receiving support for studying in Finnish.

Artikkeli käsittelee S2-kokelaiden suoriutumista ylioppilaskokeen ainereaalissa (biologiassa ja fysiikassa). Tavoitteena on selvittää, miten opiskelijoiden S2-kokeessa suoriutuminen ennustaa kokelaiden ainereaalin suorituksia.

This study explores the educational and professional trajectories of three skilled migrants in Finland. The aim is to investigate how language-related issues intertwine with the migrants’ individual trajectories to gain a deeper understanding of the kinds of challenges migrants may face in Finnish society. Drawing on the theoretical underpinnings of nexus analysis and the concept of linguistic repertoire, the study focuses on the participants’ lived experiences of language along their trajectories. The longitudinal data, consisting of interviews over the period of 4.5 years, are analysed using the nexus analytic framework. The findings show that although the participants knew English and studied Finnish successfully, their individual lived experiences of language varied, and their non-straight-forward trajectories were shaped by multiple factors. To support migrants’ agency and their possibilities to participate, we thus need more flexible language policies and practices in higher education as well as a more nuanced understanding of linguistic repertoires.

The article examines multilingual communication practices aimed at informing Finland’s foreign language speaking inhabitants on municipal elections and decision-making in the regional context of Joensuu. Our focus is on the availability and accessibility of relevant multilingual information and the potential of accessible information in developing a sense of democratic participation and critical autonomy among the immigrant population. The research is based on seven thematic interviews conducted after the 2021 municipal elections. All interviewees have experience in enabling the democratic participation of multilingual residents in Joensuu through their roles in civil service, politics, or local organizations. Poor accessibility of information has been identified as a reason for multilingual population’s low voting rates in previous research. The interview data reveal in detail what kinds of deficiencies can be identified across the components of usability, understandability, and social accessibility. The results also give insights into good practices and possible remedies.
