Increased knowledge of how sexuality is expressed in older persons may create opportunities for healthcare professionals to perform care according to a person-centered approach. To describe older people’s experiences of sexuality concerning aging, a qualitative study was conducted. Eight persons aged 60 and above were interviewed, and the obtained data were analyzed using content analysis. The findings revealed that the participants were certain of being sexually active as they got older. Awareness of what old age can bring regarding illness and increased medication intake was clear, alongside the importance of discussing sexuality with friends or a partner. Age was not seen as an obstacle to continuously being sexually active, and new ways to maintain intimacy and sexuality were identified. According to our results sexuality in older people is about well-being and intimate relationships. Creating opportunities for a trusting, caring relationship can strengthen older people’s sexual health. Healthcare professionals must, therefore, make possibilities for trustful relationships to support and discuss sexuality with older people.

AbstractThe aim of this cross-sectional study was to elucidate whether mindfulness was associated with relationship and/or sexual satisfaction among individuals in a regular relationship and to assess potential links with other factors. The research group consisted of 276 adults who were in a relationship regardless of marriage. Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS), Couples Satisfaction Index (CSI), New Sexual Satisfaction Scale (NSSS) were applied to all individuals. In the study group, 160 (58%) of the individuals were female, 116 (42%) were male, 62.3% were married, 59.8% were self-acquainted with their partner and 67.4% lived together with their partner or with their partner and children. Factors contributing to greater sexual satisfaction were shorter relationship duration and being a male, while those with an arranged marriage and those cohabiting with their partner had lower sexual satisfaction. Older age and, very interestingly, higher levels of mindfulness were associated with lower levels of relationship satisfaction. Finally, sexual and relationship satisfaction were closely associated and were respectively identified as independent factors for CSI and NSSS scores. There is a need for more comprehensive longitudinal studies evaluating relationship satisfaction and sexual satisfaction to assess causal relationships and to identify interventions that could benefit relationships. Keywords: Sexual behaviorsexual activitysexual satisfactionmindfulnesssexual partners Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the authors.Ethical approvalThis study was performed in line with the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki. 他是CETAD(性教育治疗与研究协会)的注册会员和性治疗师。

AbstractBody dissatisfaction and the prevalence of Objectification Theory are researched and often discussed in terms of cisgender women. Research that mentions body image in the gay and bisexual community concludes that there is either a small percentage of gay and bisexual men that experience body dissatisfaction or that gay and bisexual men have higher rates of body satisfaction than cisgender women. This study, firstly, aims to assess body image and satisfaction in the understudied gay community. Then, it aims to develop an understanding of gay men’s narratives of body image and body dissatisfaction. Using a unique survey composed of the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire-Appearance Scale (MBSRQ-AS) and the Objectified Body Consciousness Scale (OBCS), a total of 387 surveys, including 158 cisgender women and 179 gay and bisexual men, were collected. Upon initial observation, gay and bisexual men have greater body satisfaction than cisgender women. However, when grouped by age, gay and bisexual men aged 16-25 have a higher body dissatisfaction than cisgender women and have higher body dissatisfaction than the other age groups of gay and bisexual men. These results start the conversations that experiences that are considered traditionally feminine can affect masculine individuals.LAY SUMMARYThis study examines body image and satisfaction in the gay community, finding that gay and bisexual men generally have higher body satisfaction than cisgender women. However, younger gay and bisexual men aged 16-25 have higher body dissatisfaction than cisgender women and other age groups of gay and bisexual men. These findings suggest that traditionally feminine experiences can impact masculine individuals. Keywords: Body imageobjectification theorygay and bisexual menmbsrq-asoBCS AcknowledgementThank you, Dr. Kelly Kent, for guiding, inspiring, and nurturing this novice research to unearth concepts and data that will help people feel less shame about their experiences.

AbstractAnxiety sensitivity has been identified as a transdiagnostic risk factor with implications for problems in sexual well-being; those with higher anxiety sensitivity tend to experience poorer sexual well-being. The current study extended work examining links between anxiety sensitivity and sexual well-being to a community sample while taking into account broader psychological well-being. Participants were 484 men, women, and gender diverse adults (Mage = 31.70 years; SD = 11.26) who had engaged in partnered sexual activity at least once in their lifetime. We assessed sexual well-being broadly by including measures of sexual function, cognitive-affective responses (i.e. sexual satisfaction, sexual self-esteem, sexual distress), and sexual behavior (i.e. frequency of sexual activity, avoidance of sex). Multiple regression analyses showed that anxiety sensitivity is linked to poorer sexual well-being among men and women. Associations between anxiety sensitivity and sexual pain, sexual satisfaction (for women), and sexual distress persisted over and above the contributions of psychological well-being. Few gender effects were noted, suggesting that these experiences are common to all. Findings have clinical implications relevant to those working with individuals with anxiety or sexual problems.Lay SummaryWe tested the relation between anxiety sensitivity (fear of arousal-related body sensations like rapid heartrate) and sexual well-being. Data were collected from surveys completed by 484 adults. Results showed that having higher anxiety sensitivity was linked to more sexual pain, worse sexual satisfaction (for women), and more sexual distress. Keywords: Anxietyanxiety sensitivitydepressionsexual well-being AcknowledgementsThe authors would like to thank their team of undergraduate research assistants, Emily MacKenzie, Emma Giberson, Taylor McAulay, and Julia Keilty, for help with literature review, participant recruitment, and data management.

Therapists’ use of feedback from clients about Sensate Focus exercises: an interpretive description of therapists’ perspectives

AbstractSensate Focus (SF) forms a core part of psychosexual therapy (PST) but in many respects is under researched. A literature review identified gaps in research including: how practitioners use language when asking for feedback, in particular about sensations and pleasure, and how they help clients deal with specific distractions and blockages arising from SF exercises. Sally Thorne’s Interpretative Description methodology was used for this study, using a social constructionist epistemology and interpretive theoretical perspective. Seven therapists were selected using purposive sampling and participated in semi-structured interviews, analysed using Template Analysis. The results identified two general approaches to dealing with feedback, characterised as “touch-centred” feedback and “broad-based” feedback, though the differences are ones of emphasis rather than a strict demarcation. Therapists are also divided about the value of asking clients about their experience of pleasure in SF exercises. Differences were found in the kinds of techniques used to address distractions and blockages and the extent to which Mindfulness is applied. Recommendations made relate to raising the profile of Mindfulness in training courses, giving greater emphasis to client note-taking after sensate focus exercises, and the need for further research into the language used by therapists when dealing with feedback.LAY SUMMARYThis research was designed to help psychosexual therapists develop a greater understanding of how to process feedback from clients about Sensate Focus exercises. Recommendations include a greater emphasis on teaching Mindfulness in training courses and encouraging clients to make written notes after exercises to inform their feedback with the therapist. Keywords: Sensate focuspleasuredistractions AcknowledgmentsI would like to thank Peter Cardew, my supervisor, for his advice, support, and patience as I navigated my way through this research.

AbstractThis paper examines the various labels ascribed to males in the heterosexual discourse among female undergraduates in Nigeria. Insights from Community of Practice and Sexual Script Theory were used to demonstrate the use of situated linguistic choices to establish the differentials in male sexual behaviours. Data for the study were generated through participant observation and unstructured interviews with the aid of audiotape recordings and field notes. The study involves a representative sample of 22 female undergraduates who served as participants and research assistants. The findings reveal that situated language practices stimulate heterosexual discourses where female undergraduates creatively ascribe labels to the different males’ sexual scripts. The labels include those related to male sexual performance, body size and size of sex organs, financial and marital status, familial and gatekeeping roles, and other routine sexual behaviours shown by men in sexual phases such as advances, arousal and intercourse. The scripts are also combined to re-enact the peculiar sexual narratives by the female students that show emerging sexual orientations. It is believed that the categorisation of such males’ sexual behaviours in the University social contexts, would provide a basis for comparison with the sexual practices of other young adults’ social groups across the globe.LAY SUMMARYThe paper discusses the various strands of sexual scripts shown by men in their heterosexual relationships with female undergraduates in a Nigerian University. The students ascribed labels based on the sexual performance, economic and marital status, and other routine behaviours that have an impact on the male sexual lifestyle. Keywords: Sexual labelsheterosexual discoursefemale undergraduatesmale sexual partnersNigeria Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the author.Additional informationNotes on contributorsGod’sgift Ogban UwenDr God’sgift Ogban Uwen is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of English and Literary Studies, University of Calabar, Nigeria.

AbstractIn this work we aim to investigate how the COVID-19 pandemic measures influenced frequency of intercourse, auto-erotic behaviors, sexual desire and satisfaction and quality of couple relationships of the Portuguese Population. We also aimed to address if these changes were different across gender, relationship and work status (home-based; in-office work). This was an observational cross-sectional study, performed through an online survey. We included 316 participants. About half of the participants who were in a relationship revealed no relationship impact. The mean impact was more positive in home-based participants (1,96 vs 1,81). Half of the participants had a decrease in frequency of sexual intercourse, with in-office workers reporting a greater reduction. Mean increases in masturbation were higher in men (p < 0,001) and home-based participants (p = 0,012). Pornography consumption was higher in single (p = 0,044) and home-based participants (p = 0,04). Sexual desire was higher in single (p = 0,047) and home-based participants (p = 0,014). Sexual satisfaction was lower in single (p < 0,001) and in-office workers (p = 0,282). Home-based participants had a more positive mean impact in most variables, which was significant for participants who were in a relationship and home-based.Lay SummaryThe COVID-19 lockdown measures gave us an unprecedented look at the relationship between social isolation, romantic relationships, and human sexuality. Our work provides a portrait of the Portuguese population, pointing to the possibility that couples who spent more time at home during this period had less negative sexual and relational outcomes. Keywords: Sexual behaviorcouple relationshipsCOVID-19lockdownPortugal AcknowledgmentsThere are no acknowledgments to report.Authors’ contributionsAll authors contributed equally to the development of the manuscript.Disclosure statementThere is no conflict of interest to report.Ethical considerationsThe protocol for this study was reviewed and approved by the ethics committee of Centro Hospitalar Psiquiátrico de Lisboa.

AbstractCommunication is an important component of many healthy sexual and romantic relationships. Positive communication strategies including expressing fondness and affection, exchanging compliments, and disclosing information about oneself with a partner are associated with relationship and sexual satisfaction, but less is known about its association to sexual desire. Most of the current literature has used traditional statistical analyses that assume errors are normally distributed and that associations between variables are linear. Our study aimed to examine the ways daily levels of four positive communication strategies are associated with relationship satisfaction, sexual satisfaction, and sexual desire among 246 mixed sex couples (N = 492). We performed both traditional hierarchical linear modeling and machine learning to provide a complimentary view of results from the different data analytic techniques. Findings indicated that daily positive communication received from a partner was associated with all outcome variables of interest that day as well as for subsequent days for both partners in the couple. All positive communication strategies predicted daily levels of desire, sexual satisfaction, and relationship satisfaction for the individual and each had unique associations with partner outcomes. Unique nonlinear interactions were found using machine learning. Findings have implications for researchers and practitioners.Lay SummaryWe found that when a person reports receiving positive communication from their romantic partner (fondness, affection, compliments and intimate disclosure) on a given day, both partners have higher levels of desire and satisfaction on that day. Positive communication can be practiced by couples to enhance their sexual and relational lives. Keywords: Desiresatisfactionsexualmachine learningpositive communication Data sharing statementDue to the nature of this research, participants of this study did not agree for their data to be shared publicly, so supporting data is not available.Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the authors.Additional informationFundingThis study was funded by the Patty Brisben Foundation for Women’s Sexual Health.
