LAY SUMMARYUsers of child sexual abuse material were interviewed about changes in their daily lives as well as sexual thoughts and behaviors during the COVID-19 restrictions. The changes found, such as in general mental health and sexual urges, can increase the risk for sexual offending and are therefore important to consider regarding possible future lockdowns. In this article, we describe a qualitative study in which we examined perceived effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on help-seeking individuals who access child sexual abuse material (CSAM, legally referred to as child pornography). The study recruited 18 participants who were part of the internet based Prevent It Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) clinical trial, which aims to reduce CSAM use and child exploitation, and were willing to answer questions during a semi-structured interview about the perceived impact of the pandemic restrictions on their lives, including their sexual thoughts and behaviors. Key themes that were identified from the participants' answers included changes in day-to-day life, mental health, sexual thoughts, behaviors or urges, responses and coping strategies used to deal with sexual urges, changes on the forums, positive changes, and how they could best be assisted with coping in this situation. Our qualitative analysis also suggested that the pandemic affected urges to use CSAM, therefore potentially increasing the risk of online sexual offending. These results support that there is a need to investigate this potential negative side effect of quarantines or lockdowns before future pandemics.

Clinically, this issue brings a good deal of information to the forefront for mental health providers to take into consideration. As I often do with the issues, I peruse the articles and attempt to “group” them into similar thematic areas so similar information can be gleaned. This issue brings us topical areas such as advancing our understanding female sexuality, aging sexuality, satisfaction and functioning based on behavioral characteristics, and we even see and get a new scale assigned to an issue (but has been popular through our online first process)—the Consumption of Pornography Scale—General. An exciting element of this issue is the widespread nature of the data that has been discovered—both geographically (all over the globe!), age wise, and the way in which the researchers and authors approached the data and process are very interesting. Several qualitative studies are present in this issue, providing rich context for interpretation, with a balanced amount of quantitative data being presented.

Happy 2023! Last year we here at the journal implemented journal-related honours and awards, specifically an award for Reviewer of the Year and an award for Best Article of the Year, as well as an award for honourable mention for Best Article of the Year. So, of the 82 people who served as reviewers in the year of 2022 (all of which are listed in this issue on a standalone page of appreciation), we had one person who reviewed more submissions than anyone else and in the timeliest manner. Hence, this reviewer is being honoured with the Sexual and Relationship Therapy Reviewer of the Year Award. This reviewer is Mahbobeh Faramarzi, MD. of the Social Determinants of Health Research Center at Babol University of Medical Sciences in Babol, Iran. The work of this incredible reviewer was instrumental in the journal’s success this last year and for this we are grateful. Of the 32 scholarly articles published in print in the journal of Sexual and Relationship Therapy in 2022, seven were selected to be considered for this year’s Sexual and Relationship Therapy Best Article of the Year Award. These seven articles were chosen, because of all those articles published in print in 2022, these articles had the highest citation count, most views, most downloads, and/or highest Altmetric scores. Additional considerations in the selection of the articles to be considered for this award included the: timely nature of the content, overall quality of the writing and/or methodological approach, applicability and meaningfulness of the content to the field, the innovative nature of the contribution, and the promise to advance the field that is offered via the scholarship. The way the best article was then selected was by sharing the seven nominated articles with the SRT Editorial Board and Guest Editor/s for evaluation using a standardized evaluation form. If any perceived conflict of interest existed (e.g., the author was one of the people reviewing, or a close colleague, or a student), the Editorial Member with the conflict of interest did not evaluate that particular article. Each Editorial Member then forwarded their ratings to SRT Editorial Assistant, who then compiled the results. The results were then shared with the EIC, who then shared the results with the COSRT Training and Knowledge Manager. The award winners and honourable mentions were then informed of their recognition and now we are sharing the winners formally for the first time in this, the first issue of the year in 2023.
