ABSTRACT This paper explores community empowerment in tourism development in Nigeria through an analysis of the perceptions of key stakeholders. Community empowerment is essential to ensure local community members benefit from tourism development. The study uses a qualitative approach to evaluate the degree of local community participation and empowerment in tourism in South-West Nigeria. Findings suggest that when community members have a sense of their political agency, they feel empowered psychologically. Community empowerment was found to be experienced differently by different stakeholders within the communities—some were more positive than others. The variability of experience suggests the potential for some cross—institutional/project learning. Local Government Tourism Committees (LGTCs) can facilitate empowerment at the community level—should be supported, and their role cultivated, to address the dearth of meaningful community empowerment. This in turn will require Nigerian governance structures to be willing to devolve a degree of power and authority over decisions to these bodies and the communities they serve.

ABSTRACT Conservation Enterprise is increasingly promoted to support the conservation of species and landscapes through incentives, such as ecotourism, including in the Annapurna Conservation Area (ACA), Nepal. Yet the elusive behaviour of snow leopards here limits opportunities for conservation enterprise, particularly those linked to conventional ecotourism forms. Furthermore, the potential to explicitly link local snow leopard-friendly livestock production systems with the tourist market in the area, via eco-certified livestock products, has not been investigated. Therefore, this paper aims to explore the interest, from supply and demand perspectives, in introducing snow leopard ecotourism services and eco-certified products into the ACA tourist market. Questionnaire data were gathered from 406 tourists and 403 local residents. Our results, of interest to managers and researchers alike, show that there is potential to generate funds and support for both snow leopard conservation and community development, and add to the literature on utilising enterprise initiatives as conservation tools.

ABSTRACT Medical tourism has seen a tremendous rise in recent years. At present, technologies are giving a stronger push to medical tourism and integrating its stakeholders under the smart healthcare system (SHS). This study determines the applications of the SHS for medical tourism and how the integration of networks is happening in SHS to benefit medical tourism. The results of this study explain that mobile health, telehealth, blockchain technology, cloud technology, internet of medical things (IoMT), virtual reality, and artificial intelligence are key technological applications in SHS enlarging medical tourism. The applications of SHS provide a safe and strong roof to its stakeholders. This study presents a systematic medical travel process of medical tourists supported by smart technologies and draws some strategies for medical tourism development. Further, the study contributes to the existing body of knowledge and paves a way for enhancing smart healthcare systems and smart medical tourism concepts.

ABSTRACT Crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, can be an opportunity to re-think destination business models. Developing resilience can guide destinations through times of uncertainty and into innovative transformation. This study was a multi-method approach, in which exploratory interviews and the Delphi survey were vital for understanding multi-stakeholder involvement. This case study on Destination Franconia investigated the changes during the COVID-19 pandemic while considering the factors involved in developing a resilient destination business model. The results highlighted a mix of established values and innovations in business models, which included a “bounce-forward” ability, a resilience approach that accounted for continuous adaptation to disturbances and crises. Our findings showed that raising awareness through sharing information and a common destination strategy were essential to promote destination resilience. Finally, we introduced a threefold understanding of resilient destination development as change-driver, target, and competence.

Just Survive or Thrive? Effect of Psychological and Organizational Resilience on Adoption of Innovative Strategies by Hospitality Sector Post Covid-19

ABSTRACT Several small and medium-scale businesses within the hospitality sector have suffered significant losses due to the Covid-19 pandemic. We aim to understand the role of psychological and organizational resilience in the perceived negative impact, as well as adoption of coping strategies. Data was collected from 549 managers of small and medium-sized hotels across 28 states and three union territories in India. Structural equation methods were used to predict factors affecting adoption of four strategies, price discounts, cost-cutting, revenue generation and brand building. Organizational resilience was associated with tactical measures such as cost-cutting and price discounts. Psychological resilience of managers was associated with the adoption of strategic measures such as revenue generation and brand-building activities. Thus, we find that while organizational resilience enables survival of businesses, psychological resilience helps them to thrive. Innovative strategies and visionary leadership builds resilient businesses that endure in the long run.

ABSTRACT This research involves an in-depth study of tourism as an economic driver in rural areas. We base it on a case study of Fruiturisme, a tourism project being developed in the small town of Aitona (Catalonia) which offers the experience of viewing fruit trees in bloom. In-depth interviews to local stakeholders are used to collect data and highlight the characteristics that foster the development and continuity of such agrotourism projects in domestic and international markets, as well as the sustainability of agrarian family businesses. The support and developmental drive by Aitona Town Council, together with the endogenous collaboration of the entire municipality, has generated an ideal scenario in which to create this recognised tourist product . The contribution of this article is to highlight this cogovernance to implement tourism activities and to go on with this collaboration to diversify the business activity of different farms and entrepreneurship in the town. .

ABSTRACT The paper examines the imports of nature and the impacts of tourism development initiatives in Musina Municipality, Limpopo, South Africa. Data was garnered via questionnaire surveys, interviews, focus group discussions, document reviews, and physical observations. The study revealed the plentiful nature of tourism potential, manifesting both actual and potential tourism initiatives. However, tourism benefits to the locals were not forthcoming. Musina Municipality is one of the aridest areas in the far north of Limpopo province, South Africa. Rural communities’ poor livelihood conditions are prevalent. Despite its hinterland qualities, it occupies a largely tourism-based segment in the Vhembe District. Matters of tourism and local economic development have become a more widely studied topic in the past years. Nonetheless, few studies have investigated the synergies between various components and forms of tourism services in rural areas to advance the local communities.

ABSTRACT Despite growing calls to include important stakeholder groups in order to ensure the sustainable management and marketing of tourism, there has been little concurrent research on residents and tourists’ perceptions of cultural heritage sites. This study aims to compare tourists’ and residents’ perceptions for tourism attributes in Shandiz, one of northeastern Iran’s most popular tourist destinations. Our study isbased on four different approaches: Importance-Satisfaction Analysis [ISA] (itself a revised version of IPA); service quality gap analysis; Impact Range Satisfaction Analysis (IRSA); and Impact Asymmetry Analysis (IAA). Due to asymmetrical relationships between visitor perceptions of importance and performance, revealing influencing factors on those perceptions requires using new approaches. This study’s findings provide insights into the current debate around the best methods for service quality assessment and the identification and reconciliation of areas of agreement and disagreement between resident and tourist perceptions of cultural heritage sites.

Volunteer Tourism or Global Justice? An Autoethnography Examining My Roles as a Leader and Teacher

ABSTRACT Volunteer tourism has grown immensely in the last decade, and many participants are white students from predominantly Western universities. This autoethnography examines the cognitive dissonance I felt working as a leader within a US-based non-profit organization operating in Cape Town, South Africa. I systematically explore how my Latine and US cultures exacerbated the conflict between my understanding of cultural humility and fear of perpetuating paternalism. By triangulating qualitative and quantitative data from written personal memos, interviews, and survey responses (n = 108), I identify sources of my dissonance and strategies for achieving consonance by adopting a transformational leadership style. This study highlights the importance of cultural humility within volunteer tourism organizations by employing transformational leadership to encourage self-reflection among its permanent staff and temporary volunteers. The work stands to provide a reflexive guide for leaders of volunteer tourism and outlines how to develop strong relationships between volunteers, staff, and community members.

ABSTRACT Health and hygiene is a provision of conditions to maintain public health, and make tourists feel safer and tourism destinations become more competitive. The existing research has been conceptual or critical, and scarce empirical studies focus mainly on single-case studies. Therefore, this study came to fill a knowledge gap and analyse the importance and relationship between health and hygiene and destination competitiveness through a case study of the world’s most visited tourism destinations. The study employed three techniques to analyse the synchronic and diachronic data of the destinations, i.e. comparative analysis, graphical analysis, and One-way ANOVA. The results show that health and hygiene are the most important of the 14 pillars measuring destination competitiveness. The graphical analysis indicates a positive correlation between the health and hygiene pillar and overall competitiveness. This study should be an impetus for applied scientific research for public health policy and tourism competitiveness.
