ABSTRACTTravel agencies play a pivotal role in supporting tourists and fostering employment. This study examined the policies and strategies of travel agency managers in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and their attitudes towards government policies as external business facilitators. Data were collected from 191 travel agency managers and analysed using SPSS software. The results indicate that, instead of implementing innovative approaches, managers primarily resorted to straightforward solutions such as downsizing employees, closing businesses, and cutting wages. Furthermore, the findings concerning government support, policies, and performance, as assessed by travel agency managers, demonstrate government inadequacies in financial, socio-cultural, and IT domains. Our findings have implications for tourism managers, decision-makers, and governments concerned with the future prosperity of tourism businesses.KEYWORDS: Tourism businessesCOVID-19 pandemictravel agency managersgovernment policiesIran Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the author(s).Additional informationNotes on contributorsMehdi HajiloMehdi Hajilou is a Research Associate at the University of South Carolina, specializing in sustainable tourism, tourism analytics, and tourism geographies.Siavash Imeni GheshlaghSiavash Imeni Gheshlagh is an Assistant Professor at the University of Science and Culture, specializing in tourism management and sustainable tourism.Mahshid MohammadianMahshid Mohammadian holds a master’s degree in tourism management and has extensive experience in the hospitality and travel agencies industry.Ali IskenderAli Iskender is an adjunct faculty at Western Carolina University, specializing in technology and sustainability in tourism and hospitality studies.

With the rapidly emerging development of technology-mediated tourism experiences and place-based digital services for visitors, there is a lack of awareness regarding the spatial implications of technological implementations. Based on a participatory action research method applied in this study on five research-based destination development projects in Sweden, we propose a spatially sensible approach when developing enhanced experiences for visitors through digital technology. This paper is motivated by the emerging criticism of how media technology is shaping and reshaping spaces. Drawing on the theoretical underpinnings of the growing field of geomedia studies, we propose “geomedia sensibility” as a way to offer a sensible approach in the co-creation of digital experiences at destinations.

ABSTRACTHow to redefine tourism development from a holistic regional perspective? On Costa Brava (Spain), known as a sun and beach destination, alternative strategies are being explored to strengthen territorial resilience through the promotion of existing products, such as music festivals. A mixed methods research based on the qualitative analysis of interviews with key informants and the quantitative analysis of a battery of indicators will provide the necessary information to analyse the potential of these festivals in a context where the dependence towards tourism and the nature of the tourism model itself are being contested. Lessons learnt from last decade might contribute to a more adequate tourism development in the future.KEYWORDS: Adaptive cycleclusterfestivalsresiliencesystemic analysis AcknowledgementsWe would like to thank the reviewers for their thoughtful comments which have greatly contributed to improve our paper. This work was supported by the MCIN-AEI/10.13039/501100011033 under Grant PID2020-114186RB-C21 and Grant CSO2016-74861-R.Disclosure statementThe authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper.Notes1.
