AbstractBased on semi-structured interviews with security managers of the Czech football clubs, we addressed their role in countering football-related violence as part of the complex ‘counter-hooligan’ apparatus. We explored how their strategies responded to challenges and dilemmas resulting from the specific configuration of this apparatus, dominated by the idea of the football clubs’ primary responsibility for maintaining security and public order inside stadiums. Primarily, this idea was reflected in the police withdrawal from the stadiums and disciplinary penalties imposed on clubs by the football association. However, without a corresponding shift in the public agencies’ approach to controlling and punishing incidents of football-related violence, the clubs were not able to exclude the problematic minority from their stadiums. Consequently, they employed different informal and sometimes controversial practices, including the deployment of ‘private’ riot squads, and expressed support even for indiscriminate and unpopular measures, such as fan card schemes and biometric identification. Keywords: Football-related violencefootball clubspolicingsecurity measuresdisciplinary penaltystewarding AcknowledgmentsThe author would like to thank the interviewees from the football clubs for their time and honesty in answering the questions and the anonymous reviewers for their valuable comments and help in improving the manuscript.Disclosure statementThe author reports there are no competing interests to declare.Personal interviewsSecurity manager 1: Bartys, Robert [security manager of FC Fastav Zlín, owner of a private security company B.D.SAFE, s.r.o.] 2018.

Our paper highlights that the proliferation of Indigenous sport research has not been focused on examining Indigenous games and sports. Additionally, no one has to date produced a framework for understanding them on their own merits even though these games now form part of a national physical education curriculum. The overwhelming majority of research focuses on Indigenous engagement with the British imports of cricket, the rugby codes, soccer, and Australian Rules football. We argue that this focus serves to diminish Indigenous cultures and adaptability to colonial forces, that, while disruptive, never eliminated Indigenous games and sports which go back as far as 60,000 years. We lay out such a framework in the hopes that future research will ensure that Indigenous games and sports are understood historically and in the present day.

AbstractIn recent years, one of the historic foundations of sports media, the ‘highlight’, has been refigured as sports fans and other users have created and circulated videos outside of traditional media-institutional spaces. Indicative of this refiguration is the emergence of a new sub-genre of sports highlights: the gruesome injury video. Social networks offer videos that feature catastrophic events (visible bone breaks, etc.) and, in the process, venture into affective realms normally eschewed by mainstream sports media by conjuring the sort of affective excess more commonly associated with fictional ‘body genres’ such as horror and melodrama. With an eye to the context of digital sport media, this article uses close readings to suggest that by deviating from the traditional inoffensive exhilaration of the highlight genre, user-generated sports highlights carry the potential of fostering critical readings of sport typically discouraged by mainstream sports media.
