Is Bethany Baptist Academy God's choice? Ask the fundamentalist Christians who teach there or whose children attend the academy, and their answer will be a yes as unequivocal as their claim that the Bible is God's inerrant, absolute word. Is this truth or arrogance? In "God's Choice," Alan Peshkin offers readers the opportunity to consider this question in depth. Given the outsider's rare chance to observe such a school firsthand, Peshkin spent eighteen months studying Bethany's high school-interviewing students, parents, and educators, living in the home of Bethany Baptist Church members, and participating fully in the church's activities. From this intimate research he has fashioned a rich account of Christian schooling and an informed analysis of a clear alternative to public education.

I n recent years, axtperative learn ing has been proposed as a solu tion to a staggering array of prob lems. Oxjperative learning methods have been offered as an alternative to ability grouping, special programs for the gifted, Chapter I pull-outs, and special education They have been suggested as a means of introducing higher-level skills into the curriculum, of ensuring students an adequate level of basic skills, of mamstreaming aca demically handicapped students, and of giving students the collaborative skills necessary in an increasingly in terdependent society Further, coop erative learning methods have been proposed as a major component of bilingual and ESI, programs and as a way to improve relationships among students of different racial or ethnic backgrounds. There is evidence that cooperative learning can in fact, under certain cir cumstances, accomplish many of these goals However, i am becoming increas ingly concerned about a widespread belief that all forms of cooperative learning are instructionally effective This is emphatically not the case Two Essential Conditions Two conditions are essential if the achievement effects of cooperative learning are to be realized First, the cooperating groups must have a group goal that is important to them. For example, groups may be working to earn certificates or other recognition, to receive a few minutes extra of re-

What are the costs of education failure in the public schools? What does business need from the schools to achieve increased productivity and economic growth? Once identified, how can the education objectives to meet those needs be achieved, and how can their achievement be substantiated? These questions framed the research and analysis commissioned for the Committee for Economic Development project which resulted in the publication of the policy statement Investing In Our Children (1985). The first two questions are at the crux of the business/education relationship; the third goes to the heart of education change. These important questions have guided us in fashioning a practical, systematic approach which capitalizes on business' interest and expertise. They also contribute to our understanding of two broader, more fundamental questions. First, what is the relationship between education and economic growth? Second, what is the potential of business involvement for improving the quality of American public schools?
