Do asylum-seekers respond to policy changes in their destination country, and to what extent? We approach this question by using high-frequency data, and we focus on a sudden liberalization in Swedish policy toward Syrian asylum-seekers, which implied permanent instead of temporary residence. We show a clear and fast, yet temporary, increase in Syrian asylum applications in Sweden after the policy change. Also, the policy caused a shift – not limited to the short term – in the share of individuals arriving without family, and consequently in the share applying for family reunification. Our study adds quasi-experimental evidence to the literature on inter-country asylum flows and migration policy.

Little is known about how banks shift profits to low-tax countries. Because of their specific business model, banks use other profit-shifting channels than non-financial firms. We propose a novel and bank-specific method of profit shifting: the strategic relocation of proprietary trading to low-tax jurisdictions. Using regulatory data from the German central bank, we show that a 1 percentage point lower corporate tax rate increases banks’ fixed-income trading assets by 3–4 percent and trading derivatives by 9 percent. Suggestively, this increase does not arise from a relocation of real activities (i.e., traders); instead, it stems from the relocation of book profits.

We provide the first empirical evidence that differences in government ideology play an important role in the choice of cross-border migration destinations. In absence of first-hand experience, immigrants rely on information about the political landscape of the origin and host countries to form expectations about the context of reception in the host society. We use data on bilateral migration and government ideology for 36 OECD countries between 1990 and 2016. Our analysis shows that bilateral migration flows are higher when the government at the destination is more left-wing than the government at the origin, especially when we consider proximate countries.

We match data on performance in a multiple-choice examination with data on risk preferences from a classroom experiment. Students who are more loss averse leave more questions unanswered and perform worse in the exam when an incorrect answer is penalized compared with no answer. Thus, loss aversion parameters extracted from lottery choices in a controlled experiment have predictive power in a field environment of decision-making under uncertainty. Furthermore, the degree of loss aversion appears to be persistent over time, as the experiment was conducted three months prior to the exam. Important differences across genders are partly explained by differences in loss aversion.
