Drawing upon the concept of ‘care ecology’, in this paper we explore migrant women’s unpaid caring activities and emotional labour within the spatial orderings of the COVID-19 pandemic in and beyond Aotearoa New Zealand. In dialogue with 12 middle-class migrant women, this paper sketches a complex picture of the ways informal and unpaid caring activities are conducted across multiple scales of body, home, countries of origin and Aotearoa. The findings revealed migrant women’s caring activities were disturbed, intensified, and informed by spatial structures of the pandemic, including border closures, lockdowns and (in)accessibility to care services in Aotearoa and their homelands. These results highlight further that unpaid care, both at transnational and local levels, is not simply due to an individual’s capacity and feelings of responsibility, but is also a collective spatial construction that is shaped by a range of social, cultural, and political factors. Our research emphasises that addressing mental health challenges of migrant women during the pandemic requires targeted policies that acknowledge their invisible emotional labour and cater to their specific needs.

Custodians of a resort island: standing by between oblivion and restoration 度假岛屿的守护者:站在遗忘和恢复之间

This paper explores the experiences of three Bangladeshi migrant workers who are the sole inhabitants and custodians of a former Maldivian island resort. We show how they currently remain in a state of indeterminate standby as the future of the resort remains uncertain, put in this state of limbo by the capacity of the resort’s owners to exploit their disposability and manipulability. We investigate the rich material and sensory qualities of the island, and investigate the everyday practices that characterize how the men live and work there. First, we illustrate how the island remains haunted by the workers and tourists who formerly inhabited this space, since much of the resort infrastructure remains. Second, we explore how the buildings and things on the island are unevenly intact, in a state of partial ruination. Third, we discuss how the inexpert daily maintenance practices undertaken by the three men focus on certain areas but neglect others. Finally, we emphasize that despite their uncertain future, the men endeavour to create a stable, convivial and pleasurable island home.

‘Now there’s just a different feel’: spatiotemporal commitments & commercial racialization as markers of rural belonging “现在有一种不同的感觉”:时空承诺;商业种族化作为农村归属的标志

ABSTRACTTwenty-first century rural Midwest communities are experiencing demographic shifts and industrialization in ways that challenge assumptions about rural social cohesion. Urban spatial segregation, surveillance of immigrants and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of colour) city dwellers, and community organizing to resist these processes is well represented in social science literature. Rural contexts feature less prominently in such explorations. I draw on ethnographic research in a Midwest community to make visible the racialization of rural spaces and to illustrate how such racialization frames belonging as contingent on assimilation to white investments in rural space. I draw on the examples of homeownership, commercial space, and public gathering spaces to illustrate the prevalence of white, Euro-American spatiotemporal commitments at work in rural communities as well as how this hegemonic framework can be challenged. By laying bare the social processes enacted through the geographies of everyday life, I hope to point towards more capacious and inclusive possibilities of rural belonging.RESUMENLas comunidades rurales del medio oeste de Estados Unidos de América del siglo XXI están experimentando cambios demográficos e industrialización de maneras que desafían los supuestos sobre la cohesión social rural. Queer Latinx Worldmakings: geographies of food, love and familia in prison 《古怪的拉丁世界:监狱中食物、爱情和家庭的地理》

ABSTRACTThis study illustrates how incarcerated Latinx people create alternative social worlds or queer worldmakings as they negotiate everyday life in prison. I explore how these queer Latinx worldmakings are created and lived through the formation of chosen families or familias and the organizing of family dinners. Latinx queer worldmakings are temporary productions of social worlds that facilitate navigating life in the present while being queer and Latinx to resist as well as reconfigure disciplining heteronormative and white supremacist processes. It is the process of performing and creating a present that is oriented towards the future. I argue that such queer Latinx worldmakings counter white heteronormative social-spatial norms and carcerality, while also providing important lessons on what it means to live, love, and make place in and beyond the prison. The Latinx incarcerated women participants queered prison life by engaging in informal economies, negotiating relationships with correction officers, and securing ingredients for family dinners. By using an autoethnographic/testimonio approach and conversations with an incarcerated family member and friends, I explore two ways Latinx queer worldmakings are enacted: the creation of chosen families, and the organizing of family dinners.ResumenEste estudio ilustra cómo lxs latinxs encarcelados crean mundos sociales alternativos o Queer mientras negocian la vida cotidiana en prisión. ABSTRACTThis essay is about many things including, but not limited to, Cyrille Regis, Delia Derbyshire, an Ewok badge, Mickey Mouse, Napalm Death, the Sylvanian Families, anonymous hate mail, bereavement, the luminous popular cultures of the often-deprecated English Midlands, the absence of so many amazing popular cultures from Social & Cultural Geography, and my own recurrent failure to write about these things. It is part of a Special Issue on (Em)placing the Popular in Cultural Geography. The essay opens out a set of questions and prompts for reflection about the relationship (or, more often, the weird non-relationship) between disciplines of Social and Cultural Geography and contemporary popular cultures. This paper unravels the intimate and irritant more-than-human encounters in hostel accommodation used by migrant farm workers in regional Australia. These are communal places of inhabitancy that draw attention to the intersecting concerns of highly mobile populations, seasonal labour, migration politics, and the socio-material relationships that flourish within such spaces. I examine the presence of bed bugs and other nonhumans through interviews with farm workers, hostel operators and managers, and ethnographic observations, to highlight broader implications of such ‘communal’ forms of living. The communal nature of living alongside others is challenging, especially when the arrangement is for work and migration, rather than leisure, and due to a lack of affordable housing options. The paper uses a more-than-human lens to bring into dialogue the mobilities of these workers with notions of communal living, which are intrinsically tied to visa conditions and labour migration. In doing so, the paper contributes to broadening the understandings of how and where mobilities take shape, and the impacts that more-than-human agencies have on day-to-day life in communal living situations.

Mapping the Moral Geographies of Education draws upon the author’s research into young people’s experiences of character education to examine the wider relationships between formal and informal education as well as moral landscapes and citizenship training. The research that informs this book is based on a series of studies that included critical policy analysis, archival fieldwork, and quantitative-qualitative methods involving interviews and short-term participatory ethnography. Bringing these sources of information together, the analyses reveal insights into the different ways in which youth citizenship and moral values are intertwined in and through the spaces of education within both historical and contemporary contexts. In doing so, the book centrally advances the importance of geographical lenses in understanding character education and citizenship formations among youths, specifically those of spatialities, multi-scalar politics, and geopolitics. The book is structured into six thematically substantial chapters accompanied by an introduction and a conclusion. The first two of these chapters lay the foundation of this book by reviewing the existing scholarship on

ABSTRACT Escaping war and persecution during the twenty-tens, over two-million displacees made life-risking journeys into Europe. Trauma continued for those who managed to cross borders and reach new havens: grappling with migration systems, searching for decent housing, and striving for social integration. This article presents empirical findings of a multi-modal participatory mapping project conducted with refugees and asylum seekers in Southwest England, and highlights the impact of memory and deep creative mapping on the spatial practice of making-home in forced displacement. The resulting maps embody spaces of recovery; memoryscapes revealing synergies between the constructs of memory and the concept of home in exile. The project asks how a creative participatory method of mapping home through memory reconsolidation can ameliorate the trauma of displacement and aid the re-making of home.
