The Role of Leisure Engagement in Older Adults Adapting to New Residences and Experiencing Other Transitions during a Pandemic

AbstractOlder adults experience a transition when moving, and moving during a pandemic creates additional challenges. Leisure activities are linked to providing life satisfaction and maintaining identity among older adults experiencing life transitions such as moving to assisted living, widowhood, and caregiving responsibilities. Despite this link, there is a paucity of literature describing leisure’s role in adapting to new homes. A modified ethnographic approach was used to explore leisure’s role in older adults adapting to moving and other transitions during COVID-19. The analysis revealed that participants used leisure activities to maintain identity and to maintain and establish social circles after moving. We suggest that identity is essential to adaptation and should be added to current conceptualizations. This research has implications for practitioners and policy makers working in the community to address issues older adults may be facing by developing policies and programming that support older adults moving to new neighborhoods. Keywords: Adaptationolder adultsrelocatingtransition Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the authors.

Cooking Classes as Destination Image Contribution: A Serious Leisure Perspective

Gastronomy tourism is of great interest to scholars due to its valuable contribution to destination images. Most studies use quantitative methodology, although mixed-method research provides more valuable insights. This study proposes two complementary theoretical models based on the online gastronomic image and a mixed methodological framework to measure the impact of serious leisure gastronomic activities on the destination image, through the participants’ satisfaction and loyalty. The proposed models are applied to all online travel reviews in English (N = 4536) about cooking classes in two regions –Taiwan and Catalonia– of similar area and political system but different gastronomic cultures. The quantitative analysis shows that the cooking classes in both regions are highly appreciated. Qualitative findings indicate that the price of this serious leisure activity is affordable and show that participants reap social rewards through positive social interactions and personal rewards from three facets: activity settings, instructor attributes, and participant learning.

Exploring the connection between leisure activities and environmental behavior is crucial to help leisure destination managers understand leisure participants’ behavior and reduce environmental damage. This study aimed to examine the relationship between leisure crafting and pro-environmental behavior. The mediating role of engagement was also examined. Precisely, 535 mountaineers were surveyed on the Tashan trail in Alishan, Taiwan. The results demonstrated that leisure crafting is positively associated with engagement, while engagement is positively associated with pro-environmental behavior. Additionally, engagement mediates the relationship between leisure crafting and pro-environmental behavior. Based on these findings, the study presented theoretical and practical implications as well as suggestions for future studies.
