Abstract This paper analyses how the COVID-19 pandemic has influenced employment in the Spanish tourism sector from a gender perspective and aims to infer its impact on sustainability. We use employment data from 2002 (Q1) to 2020 (Q4) on women and men in the Spanish hospitality sector and employ fractional integration methods to determine the temporary scope of the shock. Our results suggest that the impact of the pandemic will have a permanent effect, unless strong policy measures are adopted to resume pre-crisis trends. We also found that persistence is higher for women’s than for men’s employment. Therefore, women seem to be more vulnerable to the shocks of COVID-19, making sustainable development of tourism in Spain more difficult. Based on our results, we offer policy recommendations to counter the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on gender equality and tourism sustainability.

Aviation’s climate impact allocated to inbound tourism: decision-making insights for “climate-ambitious” destinations

Abstract The climate impact from international aviation was 2.4% of the world’s total climate impact in 2018, and is expected to grow. International regulation of this impact is not aligned with trajectories to stay below 1.5 °C of global warming. Conventional approaches to allocating climate impact to international aviation also lack one of the important drivers for air travel: tourism. Existing studies have focused on the carbon footprint of residents’ outbound air travel, but there is a lack of focus on the climate impact from inbound air travel. This article quantifies the climate impact of inbound air travel, and presents it alongside the impact of outbound air travel, to get a full picture of the climate impact of tourism-driven air travel and provide insights for tourism’s decision-makers. This was done in a case study for Sweden. The results show that the emissions from inbound air travel have grown 3 times more than emissions from outbound air travel each year, at a faster rate than the yearly growth for all international air travel. Responsibility for the climate impacts of inbound and outbound air travel is discussed, along with further actions such as demarketing and focusing on closer source markets.

Human stem cell modeling of neuropsychiatric disorders: from polygenicity to convergence.

Neuropsychiatric disorders (NPD) are prevalent and devastating, posing an enormous socioeconomic burden to modern society. Recent genetic studies of NPD have identified a plethora of common genetic risk variants with small effect sizes and rare risk variants of high penetrance. While exciting, there is a pressing need to translate these genetic discoveries into better understanding of disease biology and more tailored clinical interventions. Human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-derived 2D and 3D neural cultures are becoming a promising cellular model for bridging the gap between genetic findings and disease biology for NPD. Leveraging the accessibility of patient biospecimen to convert into stem cells and the power of genome editing technology to engineer disease risk variants, hiPSC model holds the promise to disentangle the disease polygenicity, model genetic interaction with environmental factors, and uncover convergent gene pathways that may be targeted for more tailored clinical intervention.
