El turismo es un fenómeno territorial de contacto lingüístico-cultural que tiene impactos importantes tanto en las sociedades receptoras como, aunque en menor medida, en las sociedades de origen de los turistas. Aparte de las repercusiones territoriales y medioambientales, la práctica turística deja su huella en la cultura, la socio-demografía y la identidad de los destinos turísticos. Esta contribución aborda la relación entre el turismo y el multilingüismo, comparando el litoral del estado de Quintana Roo, en la península de Yucatán, México, con la isla de Mallorca.
El objetivo principal de nuestro trabajo es identificar tanto los puntos en común como las diferencias entre las dos regiones en el marco de los aspectos sociolingüísticos mencionados anteriormente, con el fin de distinguir las dinámicas lingüísticas regionales relacionadas con el turismo, por un lado, de aquellas dinámicas que operan a nivel global o transatlántico, por el otro. De esta manera, esperamos contribuir a un entendimiento más profundo de las dinámicas sociolingüísticas características para cada uno de los dos contextos.

This short contribution discusses the term and concept of isogloss: the space where a linguistic phenomenon exists or, by metonymic extension, the line that separates a particular linguistic phenomenon from another. Although the concept is currently used as an established and canonical term in linguistics, it is reasonable to explore its scope and the real sense that it carries, as well as to consider its origins and potential ambiguity in use. The main issue with the concept is that it seems to be theoretically necessary yet at the same time is not empirically attestable, which runs contrary to essential epistemological principles. We will seek to show that a) there is no contradiction between the existence of isoglosses as discrete units and the continuity of phenomena on the empirical level, b) the supposed end of the era of the diatopic anchorage of language in times of modern migration is a myth, c) that isoglosses should not be considered as established lines but rather as projections resulting from processes of individual constructions of spaces, and finally, d) that a central task of dialectology and of historical linguistics consists of the identification of the multi-layered superposition of different isoglosses that reflects the complex history of a language or variety.

intersections of three spatial phenomena: a) stratified multilingual spaces with their centers and scales; b) internal mobility of inhabitants of touristified places in terms of both horizontal mobility (internal displacements) and vertical mobility (of a socio-economic nature); and c) tourism as short-term mobility. The most important epistemological issue that emerges from the paper is the question of how to approach the effect of tourism on the linguistic ecology of touristified spaces. The descriptive-contrastive analysis of two spaces is proposed as a necessary step to study this effect. From a methodological point of view, the paper mobilizes a series of data and observations constructed from a combination of methods ranging from (digital) ethnography to demolinguistics and discourse analysis. In this sense, the paper reveals that the ontological plurality of spatiality can/should/has to result in methodological plurality.
