BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Bruxism is defined as an activity of the masticatory muscles, which is independent of the teeth presence, so it can occur in total edentulous patients and users of dental prostheses. In this sense, It is therefore necessary to know the clinical manifestations of bruxism in this population . The objective of this study was t o evaluate the clinical manifestation and the presence of probable sleep and awake bruxism in a sample of users of full dentures treated at a teaching dental clinic in the city of Ribeirão Preto/SP. METHODS: The adopted sample consisted of 30 patients (mean age 72 years, 18 women/12 men). The following questionnaires were used to assess probable bruxism: Oral Behavior Checklist (OBC), Questionnaire of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain (AADO) and the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21). The clinical assessment included the identification of wear on the prostheses, tongue indentations, bitten cheek and sensitivity in the masticatory muscles and temporomandibular joints. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. RESULTS : The average of use of the dentures were nine years. Six patients (20%) reported self-perceived sleep bruxism, and 11 (36%) reported self-perceived awake bruxism. OBC showed an average total score of 9.8 ± 6.2, with “teeth clenching” being

HIGHLIGHTS • This study reinforced the impact of isolation on patients with chronic pain, which affected functionality and quality of life. • The role of nurses as an integral part of caring for these patients with telehealth was also reinforced. • This research opted for an integrative review in order to get to know the current panorama of nurses’ scientific production on the care of patients with CP. ABSTRACT BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Social isolation, as experienced in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, has triggered psychological and neuropsychiatric problems; these conditions can aggravate chronic pain crises. It is also known that social relationships play an important role in pain and emotions. Chronic pain (CP) is a challenging disease, especially in terms of its multifaceted mechanisms and treatment. Thus, the aim of this study was to provide a better understanding of nurses’ work with patients with CP and the impact of social isolation resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. CONTENTS: This is an integrative review, carried out in the Virtual Health Library (Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde - BVS) and Medline via Pubmed databases of the National Library of Medicine. To select the articles, the following descriptors in health sciences and Medical Subject Headings (DeCS/MeSh) were considered: “Social isolation”, “Chronic pain”, “COVID-19”, “Nursing care” and “Patient care planning”, with their synonyms/alternative terms. A total of 45,703 articles were found; based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 27 articles were selected. This study hoped to answer the following guiding questions: “how do nurses work with individuals with CP during the social isolation caused by COVID-19?”, and “what are the consequences of social isolation for this population due to the COVID-19 pandemic?”. Of the 27 articles, most were published in North America and Europe, and three in Brazil. The population most affected by CP are seniors, women and people on low incomes. In terms of profession, only three of the 27 articles were published by nurses. The data was discussed considering the work of nurses with individuals with CP, especially through telehealth, as well as the impacts that people with CP have suffered from social isolation during the coronavirus pandemic. CONCLUSION: There is a significant gap in the literature regarding the role of nurses with individuals with CP in social isolation, suggesting the need for further studies in this area, mainly at the national level. From the studies found, it was evidenced that individuals who live with CP have the multiple dimensions of the human being affected, but that in this moment of social isolation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the worst commitment was the emotional one. Thus, with the continued rise of telehealth and the possibility of future pandemics, it is recommended to move the existing guidelines for the formal development of telehealth competencies towards relevant curricular content and clinical e

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES : Conventional electrodiagnostic studies (EDX) are frequently used to support the diagnosis of peripheral neuropathic pain. However, routine EDX has poor diagnostic yield for identifying small fiber neuropathy, which may be cause of neuropathic pain in some patients. This study aimed to assess the gain in diagnostic yield brought by adding pain-related evoked potentials with concentric electrode (CN-PREP) and nociceptive withdrawal reflex (NWR) assessments to EDX. METHODS : Transversal observational accuracy study which included patients referred to routine EDX in a tertiary-care hospital who reported chronic neuropathic pain in their lower limbs. Besides routine EDX, subjects underwent CN-PREP and NWR

HIGHLIGHTS 78.2% of participants with symptoms of anxiety and 54.5% of participants with symptoms of depression reported a high level of parafunction, while 71.5% of participants who reported painful TMD symptoms had symptoms of anxiety and 52% of depression. The presence of anxiety symptoms was more prevalent than depression among participants with painful symptoms associated with TMD. This study has provided insights into the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on painful TMD symptoms in university students and the influence of psychological factors such as anxiety and depression. The results observed in this study indicate consequences that may perpetuate after the COVID-19 pandemic period and instigate further studies. ABSTRACT BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The COVID-19 pandemic has been shown to be a probable aggravator of psychological responses such as anxiety and depression. This study aimed to assess the correlation between symptoms of anxiety and depression during the COVID-19 pandemic and the existence of symptoms associated with temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) in a Brazilian university population. METHODS: This epidemiological, cross-sectional clinical study evaluated its variables of interest using the COVID-19 Fear Scale, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS-A and HADS-D), Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Dysfunction (DC/TMD) and Oral Behavior Checklist (OBC) questionnaires. RESULTS: A total of 373 participants (females = 273) with a mean age of 23.8±5.45 years were included in this study. In addition, 78.2% of participants with anxiety symptoms and 54.5% of participants with depression symptoms reported a high level of TMD-related parafunction (p<0.01). The presence of anxiety symptoms increased the odds of developing intense fear of COVID-19 by 14.9 times (p<0.001) and the odds of developing moderate fear of COVID-19 by 3.5 times (p<0.001). The presence of an intense fear of COVID-19 increased the chances of developing anxiety symptoms by 17.15 times (p<0.001), while the presence of a moderate fear increased these chances by 3.12 times (p<0.001). In addition, the presence of intense (p=0.01) or moderate (p=0.018) COVID-19 fears increased the odds of developing TMD-related pain symptoms by 2.47 and 1.84 times, respectively, in this population. CONCLUSION: The presence of painful TMD symptoms was possibly influenced by fear of COVID-19. This, in turn, was related to the presence of anxiety and depression symptoms reported by the target population of this study.
