Objective: To evaluate if participants, subjected to whole-body vibration, two different types of media (paper versus tablet) and two lighting environments (fluorescent versus LED), present a difference in eye-movement parameters during reading tasks. Methods: Fourteen adults silently read two different texts in each one of the eight randomized testing conditions (whole-body vibration versus media versus lighting), resulting in 16 different texts read per individual. Whole-body vibration was applied in the vertical direction, 5Hz and 0.8 m/s 2 root-mean-square amplitude, a condition similar to those experienced by forklift truck drivers. Participants were in a sitting position with a backrest. An eye-tracker evaluated the eye-movements during the reading task. Results: Whole-body vibration significantly reduced the number of ocular fixations, and cross-correlation; and increased the reading efficiency, fixation duration, directional attack, and binocular anomalies. Neither the type of media nor the lighting environment interfered significantly with the eye-movements, both in situations with and without vibration. Conclusion: The results indicate that whole-body vibration interfered in the eye-movements during the reading task. This may impose a difficulty to process the visual information and to synchronously coordinate the binocular movements under vibration environments.

A 12-year-old boy with Donnai-Barrow syndrome diagnosed intra-uterus presented esotropia, high myopia, nystagmus, and optic disk staphyloma in an ophthalmologic examination. The patient had associated Fanconi syndrome and sensorineural hearing loss as well as facial manifestations as hypertelorism, downward slanting of palpebral fissures and low ear implantation. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed agenesis of the corpus callosum. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case associated with esotropia, nystagmus, and optic disk staphyloma

Purpose: This study aimed to implement a health-related quality of life (HRQoL) assessment protocol to measure the consequences of a rehabilitation program for visual impaired people at a leading reference institute in Brazil. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 60 visual impaired adults enrolled in a Rehabilitation Program of the Instituto Benjamin Constant. The research protocol consisted of a questionnaire with personal data, social, demographic, and clinical information; the EQ-5D-3L instrument for generic HRQoL measurement; the Patient Health Questionnaire-2 (PHQ-2) to screen for depression, and the 25-Item National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI VFQ-25) to assess specific HRQoL of visual function. The main independent variable analyzed was the exposure time to the rehabilitation. Linear regression models were used to investigate the relationship between rehabilitation time and HRQoL of the NEI VFQ-25 and EQ 5D-3L instruments. Results: Most participants (73%) have acquired visual impairment, 68% are under 60 years old, 53% lost their vision more than 10 years ago, the most common self-reported visual condition (48%

ABSTRACT Cavernous sinus and superior ophthalmic vein thrombosis is a rare clinical condition, and little described in the literature. The clinical presentation is nonspecific and highly variable, and symptoms may include red eye, ophthalmoplegia, coma, and death. The main etiology results from infection of the paranasal sinuses. The final diagnosis must be made through imaging tests such as magnetic resonance imaging. We describe a case of cavernous sinus and superior ophthalmic vein thrombosis after COVID-19 infection in a 64-year-old patient with persistent ocular hyperemia and pain on eye movement. Ophthalmological examination showed preserved visual acuity, conjunctival hyperemia, dilation of episcleral vessels and retinal vascular tortuosity in the right eye. Magnetic resonance imaging confirmed the diagnosis. The association with the COVID-19 was raised, excluding other infectious causes. Enoxaparin and Warfarin were started with significant improvement in the ocular clinical presentation and maintenance of initial visual acuity after 12 months of follow-up.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to develop and apply an online questionnaire to assess knowledge in Refractive Surgery in the analyzed population. Methods: An online questionnaire was applied to a population composed of 840 volunteer participants over 18 years of age. Results: The mean age of population was 37.85 years, of whom 60.1% were female. 20.95% of the participants reported having undergone previous eye surgery, 73.86% of which had a refractive objective. Among these, 73.08% were satisfied / very satisfied with the result. The most important criterion when choosing a refractive surgeon was the indication by a friend who underwent the procedure (43.81%). It is noteworthy that the participants who underwent refractive surgery disagreed more than the other people that “the surgery is a simple and risk-free procedure” (p = 0.0045) and that “the main objective of the surgery is to “zero” the diopter” (p = 0.0252). Conclusion: It is essential to improve population’s preoperative knowledge about Refractive Surgery, as well as continuing education for ophthalmologists. Therefore, this study encourages the development of new education tools with clear and easily accessible information, which should be informative, and not convincing.

Congenital dacryocystocele is an uncommon entity that results from a malformation of the nasolacrimal system, occurring predominantly in neonatal females. It may resolve spontaneously but can be associated with potentially serious complications as acute dacryocystitis, requiring referral to an ophthalmologist. Bilateral cases of congenital dacryocystocele are rarely reported. We present a case of acute dacryocystitis occurring in a female newborn with bilateral congenital dacryocystocele who presented with bilateral epiphora and a mass in the right medial canthus since birth. Computed tomography revealed a bilateral soft tissue lesion in the medial canthus of the ocular globe. Dacryocystocele progressed to secondary infection on the right and patient developed acute dacryocistitis. She was admitted to the hospital for intravenous antibiotic therapy followed by the nasolacrimal system probing. This case report is also important to address the management of congenital dacryocystocele, and the decision to carry out the most suitable treatment, considering the diverse therapeutic options
