Social media has emerged as a powerful tool for communication, information sharing, and collaboration in many different fields, including healthcare. Physicians and healthcare professionals are increasing their use of social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram to engage with patients, share knowledge, and stay informed about new developments in their field. Although social media has many positive effects on physicians in healthcare, it also has presented many new challenges and risks. It also has had a significant impact on the healthcare industry, changing the way physicians and patients interact, and transforming the way healthcare organizations manage their operations.

Estate planning is critical for every physician. Understanding the impact and differences between irrevocable and revocable trusts is crucial to physician estate planning. There are many different financial repercussions to irrevocable and revocable trusts. These distinctions include control over assets, protections from creditors, protection from probate, the need for a will, and usefulness for avoiding estate tax. This article attempts to separate fact from fiction.

Values-Based Leadership: Developing and Using Core Leadership Values

As healthcare organizations continue to evolve, their administrators, leaders, and managers will find themselves tackling new and unprecedented ethical dilemmas. A values-based approach to leadership can help guide them through these uncharted waters. It can also foster shared values among employees that will guide their behaviors and help them to make the best decisions possible. This article defines what it means to be a values-based leader and describes the benefits and challenges of this relatively young style of leadership. It describes how healthcare leaders can identify and articulate their organizations’ values and offers them three hands-on exercises to involve employees in the process. This article then provides how-to suggestions for writing an effective core values statement and explores ways that leaders can introduce and implement values-based leadership. Finally, this article provides examples of seven inspiring core values statements from healthcare organizations.

If your front-line staff members understand your most important goals and values, they can represent you, the physician, much more effectively (and accurately). Deliberately incorporate your vision and mission into every aspect of your training, your leadership, and your example, and you will discover the practical aspects of those esoteric statements.

The Impact of Medicaid Expansion on Critical Access Hospitals: A Game-Changer for Healthcare Accessibility

Medicaid expansion has undeniably brought about a positive transformation in the landscape of healthcare accessibility, particularly for CAHs in states that have adopted this expansion. The increase in Medicaid funding resulting from higher, insured patient volumes has allowed CAHs to become more financially stable, invest in modern infrastructure and medical technology, and expand their scope of services. By continuing to expand Medicaid and invest in CAHs, the nation can ensure that healthcare remains accessible and affordable for all, particularly in underserved rural communities.

Successful practices are placing an emphasis on enhancing efficiency and being able to see more patients in the same period while preserving patient satisfaction and preventing physician burnout. This article discusses the importance of efficiency and offers multiple suggestions for increasing efficiency that can be implemented into every medical practice. It identifies common inefficiencies and roadblocks; offers several ways to improve employee efficiency; discusses leadership, communication, and best practices to enhance workflow; and offers suggestions on how to structure a medical office to maximize patient satisfaction and provider and employee workflow.

Ten Stupid Things Doctors Do on Social Media
Pub Date : 2023-10-01 DOI: 10.55834/halmj.5544695429

This article reviews 10 common mistakes physicians make when posting comments and videos on social media platforms such as Twitter, TikTok, YouTube, and Facebook. Posting poor-quality information and information that is unscientific, unreliable, or racially and ethnically divisive should always be avoided. Substances banned or unapproved by the FDA or that violate DEA prescribing guidelines should not be marketed though social media channels. Livestreamed medical procedures should have educational value and protect patient privacy. Above all, users of social media should be thoroughly familiar with the functionality of the various platforms. Physicians’ missteps have resulted in imprisonment, revocation of medical licensure, fines, and personal and institutional reputational damage.

Video games have existed for decades as a source of entertainment but have now found themselves at the center of the rejuvenation of digital resources for healthcare professionals and organizations. Healthcare-related games and their adjunctive technologies (including virtual reality) are poised to provide great educational resources for doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals as well as patients and families. This article discusses video games as educational tools for the medical profession.

Congestive Heart Failure Readmission Rates Decline After Patient Navigator Implementation in COVID-19 Era COVID-19

Heart failure is a leading cause of hospitalizations, with a growing prevalence and a high readmission rate. Hospitalization and readmission affect both patient stress and hospital finances. The COVID-19 pandemic and broader economic conditions placed additional stress on hospitals in recent years. In response, our hospital implemented a heart failure navigator program during the COVID-19 pandemic to prevent readmissions. We monitored the readmission and mortality rates of patients hospitalized for heart failure in 2018 and 2019 (before implementation) against 2020 and 2021 (after implementation). There were 235 readmissions with 28 deaths before implementation and 156 readmissions with 17 deaths after implementation. The reduction in readmission was significant (p = .0185), with an insignificant reduction in mortality (p = .2674). This indicates that the reduction in readmission rate was secondary to navigator implementation, not patient mortality. In conclusion, a multifactorial HF navigator can reduce HF readmission, even when implemented during a pandemic that causes increased patient morbidity.
