Dictyna ottoi sp. n. is described based on specimens of both sexes collected in Azerbaijan. The new species is closely related to D. armata Thorell, 1875, a species described from Southern Ukraine. Detailed illustrations are provided for both species. Dictyna armata has never been illustrated before. Both species, together with D. uncinata Thorell, 1856, form the uncinata species group. Distribution records of the two sibling species are mapped.

In this paper, larva and pupa of Lasioptera rubi (Schrank) infected by hymenopteran parasitoids are illustrated. For the first time it is found that Platygaster pelias Walker is a solitary parasite and winters at the embryonal stage inside host larva of L. rubi reared from galls on Rubus idaeus stems in Russia. Lasioptera rubi, Torymus eadyi Graham & Gij swijt and Platygaster pelias Walker are recorded from Russia for the first time.

EST-SSR (Expressed Sequence Tag-Simple Sequence Repeat)markers were developed and used to examine genetic diversity of species assemblages of ten genera of Muscidae (Diptera), and specifically the genetic diversity of Phaonia Robineau species, from ten regions in China. 18 EST-SSR markers with high polymorphism and clear bands were screened out from 216 tested markers, with 219 alleles in total (95–280 bp) with an average of 6.1 alleles per locus. In various regions in China such as Tibet, Sichuan, and Yunnan, Muscidae species assemblages exhibited rich genetic diversity, with the polymorphism information content (PIC) values ranging from 0.831 to 0.934, while Hainan region showed a relatively low genetic diversity (PIC = 0.511). Low gene flow (Nm = 0.842) was found among the regions, and the average genetic differentiation coefficient (Fst) was 0.238, indicating a high degree of genetic differentiation among the ten surveyed assemblages. Accordingly, the ten genera of Muscidae exhibited high genetic diversity and genetic differentiation.

Understanding of species distribution, abundance and habitat affinities is crucial for red-list assessment, conservation and habitat management. In Central Finland, we studied Collembola in three habitat types, namely non-grazedmeadows, pastures and road verges using pitfall traps. Altogether, 9,630 Collembola individuals were recorded. These belonged to 12 families, 34 genera and 60 species. The number of specimens was clearly higher in meadows than in pastures or road verges. The number of species, however, was higher in meadows and road verges (40 and 39 species, respectively) than in pastures (33 species). The overall species number is comparable to other large-scale sampling schemes in similar habitats. We recorded a few abundant species (Spatulosminthurus flaviceps, Sminthurus viridis and Sminthurus nigromaculatus) that have been previously recorded from very different biotopes. In conclusion, biodiversity inventories of soil fauna, as well as other biota, should also include marginal habitats, which often host peculiar communities.

Scythris innae K. Nupponen & Haverinen, sp. n. is described from SE Kazakhstan. The genitalia of previously unknown females of Falkovitshella hindukushi Passerin d’Entrèves & Roggero, 2013, F. hypolepta (Falkovitsh, 1972) and S. niemineni Nupponen, 2014 are described. Records of 26 species embracing 304 specimens of the family Scythrididae from Kazakhstan and Tajikistan are presented. The material was collected during 2013–2014 in the course of four Finnish–Russian and Finnish–Estonian expeditions. Four species are reported as new to Kazakhstan and eight species as new to Tajikistan. The known distribution range of each species is given, and the taxonomy of some species is briefly discussed.

This study aimed to determine the cold hardiness of Phauda flammans (Lepidoptera: Zygaenidae) larvae. Supercooling points of the 1st–6th instar larvae of P. flammans ranged from –7.7 to –13.0 °C. The lethal temperatures were –8 °C for 1st, –5 °C for 2nd, and –7 °C for 3rd–6th instars. Lethal times at the instar-specific lethal temperatures were 12 h for 1st, 14 h for 2nd, 15 h for 3rd, 17 h for 4th, and 18 h for 5th–6th instars. The times required for all larvae to die in an incubator at 5 °C were 30 d for 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th instars, and 25 d for 2nd and 6th instars. The findings suggest that P. flammans is a chill-intolerant species, and larvae will die if the air temperature decreases to –5 to –8 °C for 12–18 h or to 5 °C for 25–30 d. Such conditions are, however, unlikely to occur in southern China.

This paper documents the presence of 20 species of Fanniidae in Finland. Fannia alpina Pont, 1970 and F. slovaca Gregor & Rozkošný, 2005 are new to North Europe. Fannia barbata (Stein, 1892), F. lineata (Stein, 1892) and F. nigra Malloch, 1910 are removed from the Finnish checklist. The female of Fannia stigi Rognes, 1982 is described from a Finnish specimen caught together with a male. The total number of fanniid flies known from Finland is now 61.
