This article discusses the modalities of treatment involved in step 2 of periodontal therapy, including exploring looking at the evidence-based recommendations produced by the S3 stages I–III periodontal treatment guideline. CPD/Clinical Relevance: Step 2 of periodontal therapy is essential for removal of the subgingival biofilm and reduction in the bacterial load.

This article outlines the key aspects of considering non-regenerative periodontal surgery in step 3 of the UK version of the EFP S3-level clinical practice guidelines for the treatment of periodontitis. The third step of periodontal treatment is aimed at treating those sites that have not responded adequately, targeting non-responding or residual deep pockets. The purpose of non-regenerative surgery is to achieve access to root surfaces associated with residual pockets for further subgingival instrumentation, aiming to eliminate those lesions that add complexity to the management of periodontitis (such as infrabony defects, root concavities and furcations). At these localized sites, the main objective of periodontal surgery is to improve direct vision and access for professional instrumentation, to reduce or correct anatomical factors, partially regenerate lost periodontal tissue where possible, and ultimately create an environment that is easy and comfortable for the patient and the dental professional to maintain. CPD/Clinical Relevance: Knowledge of the non-regenerative surgical treatment of Stage III and IV periodontitis patients is valuable for dental clinicians.

Peri-implant diseases, especially peri-implantitis, present a growing public health concern owing to their rising prevalence and adverse outcomes, and lead to substantial dental care costs and an overall economic impact. This article outlines the case definitions and diagnoses for peri-mucositis and peri-implantitis and summarizes the EFP S3-level clinical practice guidelines. CPD/Clinical Relevance: Understanding case definitions and diagnoses of peri-implant diseases, including peri-mucositis and peri-implantitis, is essential for dental professionals to provide effective treatment and prevent complications.

This case reports the treatment of two discoloured incisors with feldspar ceramic veneers using an integrated work approach, and the active participation of a dental technician. The patient presented an upper left central incisor with a composite restoration, and a lateral incisor with discolouration after trauma and endodontic treatment. Planning was developed in collaboration with the technician, the decision was to perform ceramic veneers on the discoloured teeth. Central incisor previous restoration was included in preparation, and lateral preparation was limited to create enough space for the veneer. This case highlights the importance of communication between patient, clinician, and technician to achieve excellent results in restorative dentistry. CPD/Clinical Relevance: Feldspar ceramic veneers might be a good option for masking light and mediumly discoloured substrates.

This case report discusses the management of a patient with severe penetrating wooden branch wounds to the left mid-face following a fall in the garden. Penetrating trauma is classified as an injury that is caused by a foreign object piercing the skin, causing damage to the underlying tissues resulting in an open wound. Penetrating injuries to the head and neck often require attendance to an emergency care unit and subsequent treatment. There are numerous vital structures that can be affected and an understanding of the complex anatomy is vital to the safe management of these patients. CPD/Clinical Relevance: Treatment of facial trauma demands comprehensive understanding of the vital structures of the head/neck along with efficacious treatment delivery.

With increasing waiting lists across the UK for oral surgery under general anaesthesia (GA), inhalation sedation (IS) may provide the answer for patients to be treated more quickly. The authors believe it is an underused technique for the management of anxious and medically compromised patients requiring oral surgery. This article demonstrates, with patient examples, how IS can be used effectively. CPD/Clinical Relevance: This article is relevant to general dental practitioners, oral surgeons and those working in sedation services.

Trauma to the primary dentition is a common occurrence affecting approximately 1 in 5 young children globally. Damage to the successor tooth may present as a localized enamel defect, dilaceration and disturbed eruption, with subsequent functional and social impact. Appropriate management of acute primary dental trauma, regular review and timely specialist referral upon detection of eruption sequence abnormalities is, therefore, imperative for long-term outcome to be optimal. This article presents a series of four case reports of paediatric patients with a history of severe primary dental trauma that resulted in significant dental anomalies requiring multidisciplinary treatment. CPD/Clinical Relevance: Information on the consequences of primary dental trauma and the advice to give to affected families is of value.

This article describes the management of a patient who experienced an unexpected and unattractive ‘greening’ of an anterior tooth following a course of bleaching. It examines the reasons for this phenomenon and describes a method for disguising the discolouration in a minimally invasive manner that can be carried out in general practice. CPD/Clinical Relevance: It is important that multiple post-operative complications are managed in a minimally invasive way whenever possible.
