A Reappraisal of Fakhruddin Mubarak Shah and the Independent Geo-political Entity of Sonargaon 对法赫鲁丁-穆巴拉克-沙阿和索纳贡独立地缘政治实体的再评价

This article proposed a fresh reading of the coins of Fakhruddin Mubarak Shah to reappraise the political history of this ruler. In the light of recent numismatic sources the present research challenges all the earlier calculations of the reign period of Fakhruddin Mubarak Shah. In doing so this study makes an intervention in the political chronology of Bengal and proposes 205 (1333 to 1538 CE) years of Independent Sultanate Period instead of 200 (1338-1358 CE) years. What was the force behind the rise of Fakhruddin Mubarak Shah? What facilitated him to become an independent authority? In attempting to answer these question this article analyses the multi-dimensional factors - manmade and natural- that acted as catalysts in the making of Sonargaon as the first independent geo-political entity in the trans-Meghna region.Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh (Hum.), Vol. 69(1), 2024, pp. 67-87

Sketching the Tactical Position and Maritime Connectivity of Bengal with Malay Archipelago (321 BCE-750 CE) 勾勒孟加拉与马来群岛的战术位置和海上联系(公元前 321 年-公元前 750 年)

This study examines the geographical and strategic proximity of Bengal and the interplay between the Bengal and Southeast Asian regions which two entities had a linkage and a great bonding from 321 BCE to 750 CE concerning maritime activities. At that time, Southeast Asia; mainly the Malay Archipelago was known as the Golden Chersonese. Despite having infinite reciprocal geographical and maritime significance, their tactical positions and strategic factors that impacted inter-linkages are seriously marginalised and infrequently looked at from the historical perspective. The study adopts historical research method in analysing the accounts of ancient Greek-Roman geographers and Chinese travellers, ancient texts, and archaeological documents qualitatively to unfold the contextual geographical factors between these two regions. The findings of this study show the strategic proximity of Bengal and its role in creating linkages with Southeast Asia through ports and maritime connectivity. The Levy System in East Bengal and its Impact on the Peasantry (1949-1967) 东孟加拉的征税制度及其对农民的影响(1949-1967 年)

The peasants of Bengal have been living through exploitation since ancient times. The intensity of exploitation of farmers increased manifold from the ancient period to the colonial period. The main reason for this was that on the one hand, the land tax or rent paid to the state during the pre-British period was increased many times and on the other hand, apart from rent, many kinds of abwabs were levied on the peasants. During the British era, the farmers thought that this exploitation and deprivation would end if the country became independent. But after the departure of the British in 1947, in the independent state of Pakistan, the farmers of East Bengal were subjected to exploitation and oppression as in the colonial period. During the Pakistan period, like the British period, the taxes and abwabs paid to the state were increased. Moreover, the levy system, a unique type of agricultural land tax that was assessed based on the total production of the farmer's total land, was introduced by the Muslim League government. As a result, the level of exploitation and oppression of the farmers of East Bengal increased manifold during the Pakistan period. Based on primary and secondary sources, this paper attempts to provide a comprehensive understanding of the introduction of the levy system and investigate its impact on the farmers. The paper will also shed light on  the reactions of politicians and peasants to this newly introduced levy system in East Bengal during the Pakistan period.Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh (Hum.), Vol. 69(1), 2024, pp. 107-121

Bangladesh-India Land Boundary Agreements, 1974-2015: Context, Correlations and Territoriality 孟加拉国-印度陆地边界协定,1974-2015 年:背景、相关性和领土性

Bangladesh and India share 4096.7 km. land boundary, which was drawn between India and the eastern part of Pakistan (East Bengal) by the Radcliffe Award during the partition of 1947. This boundary became the Bangladesh-India boundary after the liberation of Bangladesh in 1971. Therefore, the Pakistan-India land boundary disputes over the un-demarcated boundary, adverse possessions and enclaves transformed into Bangladesh-India ones. These land boundary disputes witnessed one summit-level agreement between Pakistan and India and three summit-level agreements between Bangladesh and India. However, the land boundary disputes were eventually resolved under the land swap deal of 2015. This striking background led to the question as to why these issues were hung up for 68 years, what contexts led to several summit-level agreements on the same issues, and what were the correlations among the agreements. Against this background, this article attempts to shed light on how India, being the big neighbour, dominated the entire trajectory of the land boundary disputes and how it changed its agreed positions from one agreement to another. However, the main objective of this article is to see whether India’s territoriality towards its border with Bangladesh was gradually transformed into the pattern of a zero-sum game during the period from 1974 to 2015, and what was the corresponding territoriality of Bangladesh.Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh (Hum.), Vol. 69(1), 2024, pp. 89-106

This article extensively explores marriage norms in ancient India, focusing on women's agency. It begins by dissecting the concept of marriage and its variations in ancient India and sheds light on its significance from women's viewpoints. It scrutinises the roles of women within the institution, including debates surrounding the age of marriage, the qualities sought in brides, and the complexities of partner selection including the prohibited degrees of marriage. The paper delves into her roles in marriage rituals as well as post-marital positions. Contentious issues like divorce and remarriage of women have also been touched. Overall, this article aims to uncover obscure aspects of women's autonomy within marriage, analysing their roles and representations across all facets. By examining evolving Hindu marriage norms throughout the Vedic, Puranic and Smriti periods, it emphasizes the need for a refined understanding of women's agency. Intersecting Identities, Gender and Health: A Mapping of Adolescent Health Challenges in Bangladesh 交叉的身份、性别和健康:孟加拉国青少年健康挑战图谱

This article discusses the importance of adolescent health and wellbeing for realising the dreams of future Bangladesh. Using data from secondary sources, the paper provides an overview of the challenges faced by adolescents with a focus on gender and intersectionality. Adolescents have unique health needs that are often neglected, and gender norms and values play a significant role in shaping access to resources and opportunities, eventually affecting the physical, mental, and sexual and reproductive health of males and females differently. The contemporary world becomes constrained for girls and they face additional health risks due to child marriage, childbirth, reduced contraception usage, gender-based violence, malnutrition, household and care giving responsibilities. On contrary, the world tends to open up for boys making them vulnerable to health risks like child labour, occupational injuries, physical violence, substance abuse, and suicide. Furthermore, the marginalised groups of adolescents including sexually diverse groups, children of sex workers, street children, orphans, disabled individuals, coastal and indigenous inhabitants face multiple layers of discrimination and health inequalities due to their geographical, socio-economic, gender and sexual identities. All of these diversities need to be taken into account while designing policies for addressing the specific health needs of different groups. Their health needs should be incorporated from a more holistic and broader perspective, using both gender and intersectional lens. Using data from secondary sources, the paper provides an overview of the challenges faced by adolescents with a focus on gender and intersectionality. Adolescents have unique health needs that are often neglected, and gender norms and values play a significant role in shaping access to resources and opportunities, eventually affecting the physical, mental, and sexual and reproductive health of males and females differently. The contemporary world becomes constrained for girls and they face additional health risks due to child marriage, childbirth, reduced contraception usage, gender-based violence, malnutrition, household and care giving responsibilities. On contrary, the world tends to open up for boys making them vulnerable to health risks like child labour, occupational injuries, physical violence, substance abuse, and suicide. Furthermore, the marginalised groups of adolescents including sexually diverse groups, children of sex workers, street children, orphans, disabled individuals, coastal and indigenous inhabitants face multiple layers of discrimination and health inequalities due to their geographical, socio-economic, gender and sexual identities. All of these diversities need to be taken into account while designing policies for addressing the specific health needs of different groups. Their health needs should be incorporated from a more holistic and broader perspective, using both gender and intersectional lens. A Harmonious Synthesis of Taoism, Confucianism and Buddhism in the Matrix of Chinese Culture: An Overview 中国文化母体中的道教、儒教和佛教的和谐统一:概述

This paper proposes a process of synthesis based on Chinese socio-historical context in order to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the synthesis of three major religious traditions of East Asia such as Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism. At the same time, to be considered is the syncretic approach through which these religions have attained popularity throughout all Eastern and Far Eastern parts of Asia. Thus, in order to make a reasonable justification for the current study, an attempt is made to explore how these religions have appeared to be more or less similar to each other in case of their beliefs and practices. The purpose of the current paper is to decipher the points where and how these three religions interact with each other in terms of belief and practice that is based on a cultural bridge between China and other East Asian countries. This paper offers an overview of the harmonious synthesis of Taoism, Confucianism and Buddhism in the matrix of Chinese culture. In conclusion, it points out a new mode of syncretism which can be called "Hybridization"- a new insight into the process of synthesis. Interfaith Dialogue: An Islamic Framework 宗教间对话:伊斯兰框架

This study analyses the concept of interfaith dialogue, a widely popular issue, from an Islamic perspective with a view to mitigating religious misunderstanding and promoting interfaith harmony. The study adopts qualitative content analysis based on historical elucidations of the Qur’an and the Sunnah. For this purpose, historical documents including both classical and contemporary Islamic literature have been analysed along with recent scholarly journal articles, theses, dissertations, as well as reliable online contents. The findings reveal that Islam accepts interfaith dialogue as a necessary condition for promoting peaceful coexistence and interfaith harmony in every society. The Qur'an has laid a great emphasis on maintaining unity in diversity. The Prophet (PBUH) was a model for mitigating interfaith conflicts throughout his life. Though a few Qur’anic verses seem incongruous with interfaith dialogue and harmony, upon investigation, they are attested to be applied to specific circumstances only. Finally, it concludes that Islam, being a universal religion, plays a unique role in mitigating interfaith encounters and encouraging peaceful coexistence among the followers of different religions and cultures of the world. ‘In our time sex outside marriage was a taboo. But now it is increasingly happening [...]. In today’s context [...] it is very important to build awareness.’ Such perspective from Mitiis indicative of a contemporary phenomenon with regard to portraying pre/extra marital sexual intimacy in condom advertisements (ads) in Bangladesh. Drawing from research findings of 36 in-depth interviews, this paper interrogates women’s responses to new-old (non)normative presence of sexuality in these ads, across three social classes and three generations. The paper reflects how social class, age and other identities might shape mediated conversations about normativity vs. shifting “realities” of sexuality in contemporary Bangladesh. The discussions suggest although some women want to see a reflection of the “real”, which is, the increasing practices of pre/extra marital sex, many like to see the “ideal”, the “traditional” forms of sexuality depictions in these ads. What seems significant – with regard to the portrayal of sexual intimacy, a majority of the women talk at a much-generalised level: not always tying into their experiences or their own families. They continuously engage with a dialogue with the ads, and often compare an idealised earlier period with “now” which they consider problematic. This article details the framing of emotions and workplace injustices through creative avenues and the politics of communication by activist artists from all over the world that worked in the aftermath of the Rana Plaza collapse in 2013 at Savar near Dhaka in Bangladesh. Analyzing poems, photographs, and dramatic performances, used during the protests against Rana Plaza owners, factory owners and the government, I argue that such creative works not only frame the injustices against workers but also the reflexive, affective and moral emotions to motivate audiences in resisting such injustices. After the collapse of Rana Plaza, activists framed their protests trying to express their own anguish and incite different kinds of emotions among their audience that will in turn make them active in protest. Although it is impossible to measure the impact of these creative works of art as protest, these art works are from local and international artists and were presented to transnational audiences, which sheds light on the diffusion of the protest around the world.
