Spatial approaches to religion have grown significantly in recent years and offer original perspectives for understanding new religious realities in the context of secularized countries. This article is an opportunity to show the richness of this “spatial turn” through an analysis of the theoretical tools developed by the French anthropologist Albert Piette in his work La religion de près: l’activité religieuse en train de se faire. Although this work, which has a connection to actor-network theory, does not deal directly with space, it exhibits a geographical sensibility that we will reveal. We show that these tools can be used to demonstrate a complex geography of contemporary religion—in particular the existence of a socio-spatial dialectic—and illustrate their fruitfulness with the case of an ethnographic study of two Quebec evangelical churches.

Ageing in religious orders: A different perspective on changes in contemporary monasticism

Monastic life is based on tradition and rules. It produces a homogeneous and disciplined community. But with the ageing that has been affecting them for several decades, monastic communities are relaxing their rules and rhythms, to allow their elderly to continue to participate in common life (prayer, work, meals, etc.). At the same time, they must maintain a certain rigour, as much to remain attractive to young postulants as to present their guests the asceticism that characterises their tradition. The authors went to different monastic communities in Switzerland and France to carry out an ethnographic research. Using extracts from their field journal, they highlight how monks and nuns manage their lives and invent pragmatic solutions in order to redefine every day what it means and implies ‘to be a monk or nun’.

Ancestral cites: Citation politics and canonical figures in Protestant communities

This article puts Protestant Christian communal practices that identify canonical figures in conversation with academic efforts to decolonize canons. It examines the enigmatic life of Malagasy Lutheran pastor and anticolonial activist Eugene Rateaver (1884–1962). Rateaver was controversially excommunicated from the Lutheran mission church in Madagascar in 1937 after being found guilty of unethical conduct. However, competing stories of him circulate today among retired white American missionaries and Rateaver’s US-based descendants. I take Rateaver’s case as an entry point to closely examine what it means to “cite” or reclaim previously overlooked ancestors in canonical traditions or histories. Highlighting important differences in what ancestors are culturally can illuminate the potentials and limits for transforming canonical conversations in both academic and religious communities.

Sacred cites: Engaging the spiritual in ethnographic knowledge (re)production

In this article I offer a Black feminist sacred citational praxis supported by considerations of how subjectivity, relationality, and epistemology speak to questions, such as: which voices contribute to the stories we tell, the arguments that we make, and what is our responsibility to marking and naming those voices? Certainly, the calling of academic names, those thinkers and scholars recognized in academia largely through peer-reviewed writings, is both commonplace and normative. This includes both people who are living and those who have passed. That is, part of our accepted normal praxis is being in conversation with the dead. Yet largely we don’t speak of the “normative” citations as a spiritual practice, or recognize the naming, quoting, and reproducing of people’s voices after they have passed on in that vein. What if we did? What would that look like?

In this article, we will analyze the political significance and the dynamics of transformation related to the sweat lodge ritual in the indigenous context of Quebec. While tracing the historical context of this ritual practice, which is well known throughout the Americas, we will show how it can be understood through the relational dynamics that it allows to set up : relations between the actors of the ritual, between the participants and the territory, between human and non-human world, between the present and the colonial history, between future perspectives and the heritage of ancestors. This relational perspective of ritual allows us to question the way in which it is inscribed in different healing initiatives while referring to current processes of political affirmation in the indigenous context.
