Words for the journey: reading and writing to manage grief in a fleeting population

The objective of this article is to discuss the relevance of reading and writing as a tool of expression, reflection and emotional containment for the mobility population. The epistemic positioning of the research is based on a methodology of participatory action, whose socio-critical orientation was nourished by workshops, group interviews and constant accompaniment to the agents involved. Along these lines, the experience achieved by undertaking literacy workshops on grief in two shelters located in the city of Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas is shown; both dedicated to the comprehensive care of migrants as they pass through the southern border of Mexico. Among the results achieved, the following stand out: 1) The reasons why reading and writing is considered a schooled and technocratic practice and 2) The liberating potential of reading and writing about grief becomes “words for the path” yet to be traveled: an alternative of psychological care for a fleeting population.

This article addresses the multiple aspects involved in constructing migrant identity, both as a mechanism of adaptation to the new destination and as a mechanism of conservation of cultural aspects of the country of origin in persons from the Venezuelan diaspora. For this, qualitative research executed by Equilibrium CenDE in 2022 through 3 focus groups of young Venezuelans in Bogotá, Mexico City, and Buenos Aires is used. The testimonies obtained in the focus groups allowed us to establish three categories of analysis: migrant bereavement, expressiveness of the people, and ways of linking with the receiving culture. The results show that the construction of migration identity varies between people and is influenced by individual and collective factors and conjunctural and structural factors.

The internal migration of indigenous families in Mexico is due above all to the precarious economic situation in their places of origin. Such is the case of the families that migrated from San Agustín Oapan, Guerrero to the city of Morelia, where they have formed a civil association, dedicated to the production and sale of crafts. The objective of this text is to describe the main experiences associated with the migration process experienced by the first families that settled in Morelia. To achieve this, qualitative research focused on doubly reflexive ethnography was carried out. Among the main challenges they faced, the following stand out: language, discrimination, food, fear of the unknown; While the resources that allowed them to face such challenges were: communality, their culture and resilient attitude. It is concluded that, despite the difficulties, the quality of life of the families improved and they remain linked to their original people.

Migration is becoming increasingly present in places that previously had little influx, such as the case of the State of Mexico in the municipalities of Toluca and Metepec. It has been the case because migratory routes and flows continue to increase and are the new ways of moving around the country. The purpose of this reflection is to give a historical and current overview of the Central and South American migration of children and adolescents, who have passed through Protection Office Shelter to Childs and Adolescents, belonging to the DIF system of the State of Mexico.

The text explores a series of reflections on the practice of listening within working groups with migrant communities within the framework of the Binational Migrant Education Program. Through educational workshops, there was an opportunity to work with migrant families on various topics such as health, coexistence, or recommendations for school learning. The author suggests some strategies and thematic axes prioritizing communication and mutual understanding. Additionally, he emphasizes the importance of making visible the role of girls, boys, and adolescents in the migration process in order to understand their needs and dreams.

This article addresses the mental health of migrants, the risks of undocumented migration, the processes of social readjustment that Mexicans must undergo abroad, as well as the challenges faced by migrants when returning to Mexico voluntarily or forcibly. All of this with the intention of providing an overview of the impact these experiences can have on mental health and the importance of generating public policies aimed at ensuring that this population receives timely psychological care. The social activism of activists is promoting the linking of civil society organizations with universities, so that together we can ensure that this need is addressed.
