Hunter-gatherer-fishers inhabited the wetlands of the Rio Salado Depression (Argentine Pampas) during the Late Holocene ( ca . 2400 to 400 years BP); they manufactured pottery and developed different strategies of acquisition and manufacture of bones and teeth for use as tools. The economy of these societies was based mainly on exploiting small-sized species, such as coypu (a rodent), fishes, as well as continental and aquatic birds. Two species of deer were complementary resources. Twenty-five bones from the sites LG1 (n= 4) and LG5 (n= 21) that show indications of human manipulation were subjected to a techno-morphological analysis. The following parameters were considered: material, type of fracture, dimensions and presence/absence of marks; the effects of taphonomic agents and processes on bone surfaces are evaluated as well. Human modification on the bones of several taxa were identified: Aves (n= 4), Rallidae (n= 1), Mammalia (n= 2), Cervidae (n=4), Ozotoceros bezoarticus (n=8), Blastoceros dichotomus (n= 1), Rodentia (n= 1), Rodentia cf. Caviinae (n= 3) and Myocastor coypus (n= 1). On this basis, we characterized the Morphological Groups as, tubes, bevelled tools, points (channelled, semi-channeled, blunt-ended), and those tools not allocated to these groups, were designated as Undetermined. The potential function of these tools is discussed, we propose that bone technology was part of the integral use of faunal resources in the area.

In this article we discuss the importance of aquatic environments for past societies, and the ways in which this topic has been approached in archaeological research. Although framed at a global scale, the focus is on hunter-gatherer, fisher, and/or small-scale horticulture societies, with special emphasis on Argentina and Southern South America. Aquatic environments are considered here in their broadest sense, including both marine and continental lands, and also still/moving, and shallow/deep bodies of water. After a general summary on the importance of aquatic environments throughout human history, this article focuses on three main topics. First, the different ways, and technological strategies in which humans exploit aquatic landscapes (navigation, use of water, and exploitation of mineral, animal and plant resources). Following, the differences in the use intensity of aquatic environments by humans; in order to categorize this diversity four different variants were defined (punctual use, occasional use, sustained use, and intensive use) for each of which archaeological expectations were defined. Finally, we also review certain relevant aspects connecting aquatic environments to social communication and symbolism.

Here we present new data on the techno-morphological and functional analysis of bone technology from Middle and Late Holocene sites located in the southwestern the Buenos Aires Province. These bone artifacts are morphologically different, and include points and blunt points. Diagnostic traces of kinematics and the materials on which they were used, were also identified. Artifacts from the Middle Holocene contexts showed traces created by transverse movements on hard surfaces. Meanwhile, rotary and transverse actions on soft surfaces due to work leather were observed on those artifacts from Late Holocene contexts.

In this paper, we analyze shell and stone beads recovered from the San Matias Gulf, Rio Negro coast (Argentina), using qualitative and quantitative methods. To this end, metric and geometric morphometric (elliptic Fourier analysis) techniques were combined, thereby achieving a more detailed description of design variability. The results show some differences in the shape and size related to raw materials used in these items manufacture. Finally, the causes of observed differences are discussed, with special focus on the weight of the mechanical and physical properties of raw materials used in the preparation of such ornamental objects.

In this article, we present the results obtained from the stylistic analysis, as well as the technological and petrographic study of ceramic recovered from the Los Viscos site, El Bolson Valley (Belen, Catamarca). The site is a rock-shelter which was occupied discontinuously, yet recurrently between c. 1,000 BC – AD 1,600. The site functioned as a temporary shelter associated to interregional mobility. The ceramics recovered from the various occupation layers’ date to the Formative, Regional Development and Indo-Hispanic period. We undertook, a synchronous and diachronic analysis of the material with the aim of contributing to the study of valley’s ceramic production practices, thereby generating data linking the site with other regions. In this manner, the ceramic provenance was discussed, suggesting that there was diferential movement at play between fine and common ceramics throughout the chronological sequence.

In this paper, we present the results of pollen analysis carried out at the Familia Primon archaeological site, located in a transitional area of the Parana River floodplain (Santa Fe, Argentina). The aim of this study was to undertake a preliminary analysis of the archaeopalynological assemblage, and thereby provide an insight into the availability of plant resources that might have been used by hunter-gatherers in the past. In so doing, the identification and interpretation of the pollen recovered from the site was carried out. The collated record shows a first pollen zone characterized by the predominance of herbaceous and arboreal-bushes, typical of a xerophilous forest. A second zone was observed around the 470±50 years BP mark. This zone suggests a relative increase in humidity, given the presence of typical vegetal taxa ( v.g. Prosopis sp., Celtis sp. and Syagrus romanzoffiana ) that have intrinsic qualities useful for the human subsistence.
