This article presents the results of research relating to the morphogenesis of the villages in the community of Uniejów. This work is an attempt to apply retrogressive methods to clarify the process of formation and development of layouts of villages and identify the historical relics of rural forms in contemporary cultural landscape of analyzed area. The study included irregular early medieval villages, regular villages that have passed the regulations associated with the location under the German law in the Middle Ages, the villages from the period of development of the manorial economy, villages from the modern period connected with Dutch settlement, and the villages formed as a result of the process of spatial reorganization in the nineteenth century. Development of rural forms in the community of Uniejów was the result of natural, legal, ownership and socio-agrarian influences. In the early Middle Ages one can identify the irregular layouts in the form of a road villages, an oval and multi-road villages. The process of location under the German law brought the development of settlement forms in the shape of large, regular street and oval villages. In the modern period one can identify the manorial forms as morphological elements closely connected with villages of older origin or the manorial forms as an autonomous settlement units. It is also characteristic that one can recognize many hamlets formed on the basis of division of property. In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century in the studied area one can identify a couple of row villages inhabited by German population. Significant changes in the settlement network of community of Uniejów took place in the nineteenth century. The processes of regulation and parceling-out implicated the formation of new settlement units in the form of row villages with stripes fields and scattered villages with block layout of the fields.

In the second half of XIX century societies of sobriety were being established on Polish lands as part of the so called organic work (work at the foundations). The Book of the Brotherhood of Sobriety from Uniejów parish, kept in Włocławek Diocese Archive, contains – besides laws and indulgences (referring to the decree of Pope Pius IX of 28.07.1851), an appendix and a prayer – a list of 775 members of the brotherhood. This material may be useful to researchers investigating the history of the region, in such areas as religious and cultural life, anthroponymy, toponymy and genealogy.

This article examines the linguistic aspect of names of places, both inhabited and uninhabited, within Uniejów commune. In total, 350 objects have been described. Information was obtained mainly through direct interviews with residents of the localities and from written sources. The article begins with explanations concerning proper names, toponyms and their classification model. It then presents a lexicon of all collected place names (oikonyms and microtoponyms) and discusses it, and provides a linguistic characterization of all the names according to the chosen classification model. The presented material can be useful in dialectological studies as many of the names have retained phonetic features specific to the local dialect. Names of geographical locations contained in this study are usually limited in range to single villages, in which they were created and transmitted from generation to generation or modified.

This article investigates transport accessibility of Uniejów – a small town in Łódź voivodeship. It has been assessed through analysis of transport infrastructure in qualitative and quantitative terms, and effectiveness of public and individual transport in the temporal and economic aspect. All measurements were put in the topological perspective, with reference to the remaining 43 towns of Łódź voivodeship. This enabled identification of the degree of Uniejów’s transport accessibility in the settlement network of the region. Quick, safe and possibly inexpensive transport connections are particularly important for Uniejów because of its spa and recreational function.

The article recounts the story of the killing of the administrator of Uniejów castle, provost of Kurzelów Pełka, by Mikołaj of Grabów, the castellan of Łęczyca, during a feast organized by the governor of Łęczyca, Piotr Kmita, in Dąbie on the river Ner. As a result of the killing, Pełka’s brother Bernard of Garbów occupies the archbishop’s castle in Uniejów and plunders it. The starost of Greater Poland, Domarat of Pierzchno, undertakes intervention which leads to an agreement that in return for leaving the castle he can keep the loot and go away free. The author provides descriptions of the heroes of those events and of the general situation in Greater Poland during the reign of Louis I of Hungary.

Between the years 1921–1926 a school functioned in Uniejów, the main aim of which was to prepare students for education in teacher seminars. This institution has fallen into oblivion. Reminding its history is a significant element in reconstructing the history of education in Uniejów and this region.

Registers of births, marriages and deaths contain primary genealogical data, such as names, surnames, dates of birth and death, places of residence, names of parents, witnesses and church registrars. This type of information is a valuable source supplementing the history of a region. The data can be analysed from various angles and for different purposes: biographical, genealogical, demographic, anthroponomastic and toponomastic. The information obtained is particularly useful for researchers studying the history of the registry, medicine, material culture and ethnography.

It does not often happen in the history of urban development that conditions in which towns are functioning are radically changed. Uniejów on the river Warta, with a population of a little above 3000, is one of such urban centres – its development path is now taking a new turn due to intensive development of tourism and recreation functions. The changes that are taking place in Uniejów are primarily affecting its residents. To find out their opinions on the new situation a survey has been conducted on a random sample of the inhabitants of the city and its region. The responses received show that generally the perception of the changes is positive – 100% of the respondents appreciate the improved appearance of the city and 76% point to increased economic growth. On the other hand, there are opinions indicating limited participation of the inhabitants in the success of the city – there are persons who feel to be affected negatively or not at all. This may be due to the fact that Uniejów has only very recently started the new development trajectory and it is too early for all the residents to feel its impact.
