The portuguese poet António Feliciano de Castilho (1800-1875) created the Castilho Method for teaching reading, and came to Brazil in 1855 to disseminate it. Aiming to contribute to the teaching of reading and writing, he proposed different reforms in primary and secondary education in Portugal and Brazil, incorpo-rated into the Modernity project, in which the school based on traditionalism was designed as a stage for ex-perimentation in a project of pedagogical and social re-demption. Despite having received several resistances and the cancellation of his course, Brazilian and Portuguese subjects who lived in the Brazilian court and who were considered “friends” by the poet appeared in the historical sources. The major methodological challen-ge of this article consisted in tracking this network of supporters of this educational project in the Brazilian empire. This analysis will be based on authors such as Albuquerque (2019), Boto (2012) and Castilho’s me-morialist works (1902).

Associated with civilizations who flourished long ago in the Mediterranean area, the azulejo was used in architecture due to its durability and brightness. Introduced in Portugal still using Is-lamic techniques and aesthetic language, soon it was adjusted to the Portuguese sensitivity. This was the beginning of a process that still continues today, rich in metamorphosis and creation, mirroring the expecta-tions and the angst of a nation, in its beliefs and hopes. In Portugal, the azulejo reflects that History but also some of the characteristics of its people. It can be used to create illusion, rebellion, sensitivity, humour, re-sourcefulness, candour… Today, in a changing society, it seeks to adjust to new languages and to other paths. Will it succeed? Only time will tell.

El presente libro es fruto del trabajo desarrollado por un equipo de investigación a lo largo de cuatro años (2015-2018), liderado por el profesor José Luis García Ruiz, Catedrático de Historia Económica de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid. El principal objetivo de este proyecto era el de cuestionarse cómo evolucionó el proceso de industrialización y posterior reindustrialización español desde el siglo XIX hasta la actualidad. Hay que agradecer al coordinador del libro que desde el comienzo deje clara la principal premisa seguida en esta investigación: todos los autores consideran imprescindible la existencia de políticas industriales para desarrollar este sector, ya que sin ellas no podrían llevarse a cabo. Descartan de esta manera la idea de que la industria puede aparecer y arraigar en cualquier lugar sólo por la mera voluntad del empresario sin tener en cuenta y sin contar con el apoyo, de una u otra forma, de algún tipo de política industrial dirigida por las instituciones políticas.

RESUMO Nos séculos XIX e XX, as rochas ornamentais continuaram a ter um papel importante nas obras de construção e reconstrução em Portugal. Em Lisboa, o Lioz a par de outras variedades de calcário das imediações da capital, muitas vezes conjugados com Brecha da Arrábida e com Mármores do Anticlinal de Estremoz, definem edifícios e a paisagem. Partindo de três casos de estudo – Palácio da Ajuda (construção), Palácio das Cortes (ampliação e renovação) e Panteão Nacional (conclusão) – enquadrados em tempos e conjunturas distintas, procura-se identificar e contextualizar a presença dos “mármores” (por vezes, um abrangente e indefinido conceito) nestes edifícios, os critérios de escolha e fornecedores. Monumentalidade, efeitos cromáticos, conveniência, disponibilidade, proximidade, custo e tempo, revelaram-se fatores determinantes nas opções de arquitetos e encomendantes.

Since the beginning of the process of occupation of its territory, the built heritage and the urban landscape of the city of Ouro Preto (Minas Gerais, Brazil), has un dergone several changes. At first, during Portuguese colonization, this landscape was guided by the explo ration of the soil in search of ores and characterized by aspects of the baroque. A second moment of urban con formation concerns the period of national moderniza tion and appreciation of heritage. In the contemporary context, the materiality of this landscape is shaped by two aspects: due to neoliberal urbanism, the touristifi cation of the territory by the association of the tourism industry with the cultural industry; simultaneously, the residents’ search for survival in the urban space through informal occupations. In this sense, this work, based on a particular understanding of the notion of landscape, proposes a look at urban landscapes built along the exploration of Ouro Preto’s territory, focusing on materiality, uses and appropriations.
