Low attendance by patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD stage 4 and 5) to the kidney replacement therapy (KRT) education sessions was noted by our nurse practitioners at a safety net hospital. The main outcome measure was the weekly percentage of patients with advanced CKD seen by the nephrology division weekly that completed KRT education. Process measures were weekly KRT session attendance by scheduled patients and the weekly referral of patients to KRT education sessions. The weekly education class attendance by scheduled patients reached the target level. This quality improvement project resulted in patients having access to virtual education sessions that helped provide distanced education during the COVID-19 pandemic, and benefitted patients living further away or needing more flexible options due to work and other commitments even in post-pandemic times. Making virtual visits available reduces travel cost for the person as well.

This article describes observations and findings related to infection prevention and control in dialysis facilities. Ensuring infection control best practices is critical for patient safety. Survey findings related to hand hygiene, disinfection practices, medication preparation and administration, central venous catheter management, and hepatitis B surveillance are reviewed. Implications for nephrology nursing in each scenario are discussed, including survey guidance for COVID-19 post-pandemic.

Studies suggest that the hemodialysis (HD) shift on which a patient dialyzes impacts sleep disorders, depressive symptoms, quality of life, and mortality. However, study findings have been limited and inconsistent. The purpose of this project was to determine the relationship between HD shifts (morning, afternoon, and evening), and depression and sleep quality disturbance. Forty-one participants were recruited to participate in this project. Participants on the third shift had the highest levels of depression (M = 11.67) and poorest sleep quality (M = 14.5), compared to those who dialyzed on the first shift, who had the best sleep quality scores (M = 8.31; p = 0.013) and depression scores (M = 4.25). A significant positive correlation was observed between depression and sleep quality scores (r = 0.64; p < 0.001). Results indicate the HD shift can play a significant role in sleep disturbances and depression in patients on HD. Further studies need to be conducted to validate these findings.
