A monopolistic firm is considered that can choose between two production activities: a capital-intensive one and a labor-intensive one. The successive stages of evolution of the firm are discussed for several alternative formulations of the objective functional. The effect of a minimum employment constraint is investigated and other sensitivity results are provided.

This paper deals with the problem of production and advertising policy for a decaying item whose gradual loss of potential or utility is associated with the passage of time, such as grain, photographic film or electronic components. The delay effects of the advertisement on the sales rate are also considered in the problem. This leads to a control problem where the state equations are represented by integro-differential equations. The objective is to use optimal control theory to determine the production and advertising rates of the decay item which maximize the current value of net profit stream. For the model developed we present a computational procedure of finding the optimal policy and then carry out sensitivity analysis through an example problem. The properties of the optimal solution are discussed for the case of constant rate of delay effect.

Dynamic suboptimal control of a heat pump/heat storage system, recovering heat from a ground source and supplying it to a building via a storage tank, is investigated when the utilities offer time-of-day energy price incentives. On the basis of the analytical solution to the periodic optimization problem,1 suboptimal trajectories for the general time-varying case are developed and a method for dealing with transition trajectories from one day to the next is given. The transition trajectories are very close to the numerically generated optimal trajectories and are simple enough to be implemented on microprocessors by use of standard PI controllers.

An approximation technique is developed for the steady-state solution of the time-varying matrix Riccati equation. We show how the Newton-type algorithm of Kleinman, developed for computing the steady solution to the algebraic Riccati equation for time-invariant systems, can be extended for time-varying linear systems. The time-varying case is considerably more involved than the time-invariant one. Consider a linear time-varying system x(t) = F(t)x(t) + G(t)u(t). If (F, G) is uniformly completely controllable, we show how one can construct a recursive sequence of matrix functions (using linear techniques) which converge to the steady-state solution of the associated time-varying matrix Riccati equation (a non-linear object). At each successive state, the next approximation is in terms of the steady-state solution to a linear Lyapunov differential equation (which is the extension of the algebraic Lyapunov equations used by Kleinman) for which an explicit expression exists. This provides an approximation technique for obtaining infinite-time, linear-quadratic, optimal controllers and steady-state Kalman—Bucy filters for time-varying systems using purely linear techniques. Thus, we provide new types of suboptimal stabilizing feedback laws for linear time-varying systems.

A multi-input/multi-output feedback control system synthesis method with output feedback structure is proposed on the basis of an improved optimal regulator theory. The method is applied to a DC motor/AC generator system. The effectiveness of the method is demonstrated by simulation and experimental studies. An input-output relation is derived through the observable canonical form of the state equations of the controlled object, and an improved optimal regulator theory is applied to the relation. The controller consists of proportional actions, integral actions, difference actions and compensating actions for input delay times. The (l — 1) th-order difference actions are included in the controller for the controlled object in which an lth-order output subsystem is included. On the other hand, the (n — 1) th-order difference actions are included in the previous method for the same controlled object. In order to consider the transient response of the designed control system, the relations between the weighting factors in the defined performance index and the transient response are studied by simulation and experiment. Satisfactory responses for a two-input/two-output system are obtained in our experiments.

Adjustment costs and the theory of optimal investment and financing of the firm 调整成本与企业最优投融资理论

A dynamic optimal-control based model that explicitly includes the effects of adjustment costs of investment and financing is presented to analyse the investment and financing decisions of a present value-maximizing firm. The model is constrained by an equity-capital formation and a linear homogeneous earnings-investment possibility function composed of two components: an adjustment-cost function and an ordinary production function. Pontryagin's maximum principle is used to solve the model. The main results derived from the model include an optimal investment decision rule, an optimal investment-financing plan, the long-run equity demand for the firm, and the long-run behaviour of investment and financing as they are affected by the existence of adjustment costs.

This paper proposes a synthesis method for an efficiency-optimized speed control system using a performance index including loss term. Since the performance index almost includes the loss term at the steady state, suboptimal efficiency is obtained. The speed response is controlled by tuning the values of the weighting factors at the transient state. The effectiveness is shown in simulation and experimental studies, and the system is more efficient than the usual control systems with constant field excitation.
