Synthesis and structural characterization of N(4)-substituted 2-acetylpyridine-N(4)-methyl-3-thiosemicarbazone (L) and its two metal complexes [Cu(L)(OAc)] (1) and [ZnL(OAc)]2 (2) are reported. Between the two complexes 1 is found to have good anticancer activity against Human lung cancer cell line (A549). Fluorescence microscopy finds the formation of reactive oxygen species on treatment of the cancer cells with 1. The IC50 value of the complex is measured as 0.72 M which is lower than that of cisplatin against A549.

The polyaniline-coated magnetite/silica nanomaterials (Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 /PANI) have been synthesized and successfully applied as an effective sorbent for preconcentration of several typical organic acids from environmental water samples. The properties of Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 /PANI are characterized by FT-IR and XPS. These magnetic materials can enrich trace organic acids effectively by solid-phase extraction. Three kinds of organic acids, including benzoic acids, phthalic acids, and p -toluene sulfonic acids, are selected as target analytes for magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE). Various experimental parameters of the MSPE were investigated and optimized. After the desorption process, the elution is detected by the UV-visible spectrophotometer. The spectroscopic data are analyzed through the partial least squares (PLS) method, which facilitate quantitation of mixture from complex data. The enrichment factor of benzoic acids, phthalic acids and p -toluene sulfonic acids reached 19.53, 20.31, and 16.89, respectively. A wide measurement range of 10 μg L -1 to 50 mg L -1 is obtained. The LOD is 0.8 μg L -1 . The spiked recoveries in the range of 94%-101% with RSD ( n =8) lower than 4%. These lead(II) complexes of mixed organic ligands have been characterized on the basis of physico-chemical and spectroscopic studies.

Four new mononuclear manganese(III) complexes namely 1, 2, 3 and 4 of salen-type ligands H2L 1-H2L 4 (ligands were obtained in situ via Schiff-base condensation of 2-formyl-6-hydroxymethyl-4-methylphenol and amines cyclohexane-1,2diamine, 2-methylpropane-1,2-diamine, propane-1,2-diamine and ethane-1,2-diamine, respectively) have been synthesised and characterised by routine physicochemical techniques. 1 is further characterised by X-ray single crystal structure analysis. Catalytic efficiencies of the complexes as epoxidation catalysts (substrates: styrene and (E)-stilbene; terminal oxidants: PhIO/NaOCl; solvent: MeCN /dicholorometane) and as catalysts for oxidation of catachol (substrates: 3,5-di-tertbutylcatechol (3,5-DTBC); solvent: methanol) have been evaluated. In both cases the catalytic efficiency increases on going from 4-1 although the actual mechanisms in those two catalytic reactions are completely different. However, the observations have been rationalized on the basis of steric and electronic factors exerted by the alkyl substituents present on the imine back-bone of the salen-type ligands. This study also verifies that there is at least another active epoxidizing species, [Cl–O–Mn(III)(salen)X] in addition to the discrete Mn(V)=O(salen) species in epoxidation of olefins depending upon the terminal oxidants employed.
