Design and Evaluation of a Multifaceted Virtual Reality Learning Environment 设计和评估多元虚拟现实学习环境

Digital media and technology play a pivotal role in fostering future-oriented learning, enhancing long-term learning outcomes, and facilitating more practical applications in a user-friendly manner. Despite the inherent complexity associated with both hardware and software implementation, virtual reality (VR) presents abundant opportunities to broaden the horizons of learning. In the THI-LearningLabVR project, we have developed and regularly utilized a virtual learning environment, which has been subject to evaluation by students to enhance their learning experiences. Within two studies which were based on previous research findings, we evaluated the usability and the impact on learning and motivation of two different VR Learning Environments, one focused on a specific STEM subject and one brainstorming environment, usable for many different kinds of subjects.

With each passing year, we continue to read and write statements such as “As the climate crisis accelerates, the imperative for sustainability has never been more urgent.” Pervasive computing continues to be specially poised to contribute to this priority. As a field, we collectively develop new devices and services; we create tools for algorithmic data analysis and control; and not least, we study digital technologies and services in use, and assess their impacts. This introduction to the special issue briefly reflects on sustainability research in pervasive computing, makes connections to important related fields, and presents the issue’s five articles, which represent the kind of diverse perspectives and approaches needed to address one of the biggest challenges of our time.
