Cordia trichotoma , popularly known in Brazil as ‘louro-pardo’, has numerous environmental and timber-related applications. This species is naturally propagated by seeds; however, this form of propagation results in restricted seedling production due to high genetic variability associated with a low degree of forest improvement. Thus, the cloning of selected adult trees is an alternative for producing high-quality plants. The aims of this work were to evaluate the emission of epicormic shoots from pruned branches and to define a protocol for the in vitro establishment of C. trichotoma selected adult trees. Propagules used in these experiments were derived from the selection of four C. trichotoma adult trees. The branches were placed in a greenhouse to induce epicormic shoots. Number of shoots according to the climatic season (autumn and spring) and shoot collection time were evaluated. Three sodium hypochlorite concentrations were evaluated for five minutes (C 1 = 0.58 % active chlorine, C 2 = 1.12 % active chlorine, and C 3 = 2.12 % active chlorine) for in vitro establishment. Results indicated that the epicormic shoot technique could be considered viable for shoot emission of C . trichotoma, regardless of the climatic season (autumn or spring). Sodium hypochlorite solution applied for 5 minutes (1.12 % of active chlorine) was effective for the in vitro establishment of nodal segments from epicormic shoots, resulting in 61.3 % of established explants. These results are promising for the cloning of adult trees during the mature stage of development in the field without the need to cut the selected tree.

Energy crops have proved to be a viable alternative to fossil fuels. However, high biomass production always means that large quantities of nutrients from the soil are removed at harvest. The goal of this work was to estimate nutrient (nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium) use efficiency (NUE) and nitrogen balance in an eight-year-old Populus deltoides clone Lux, short rotation forestry under two cutting cycles, every two (biennial) and three (triennial) years, carried out under Mediterranean climate conditions. Results indicate that NUE, for all the analyzed elements, contained variations with slightly higher values for nitrogen and phosphorous in the triennial cycle. Although poplar cultivation has a positive nutrient efficiency, in terms of nitrogen, there is significant loss of this element in the crop cycle.

The risk assessment of urban trees is a challenge that must be addressed by many cities, in consideration of their climatology, management and spatial heterogeneity. Since these trees are in stages of aging, added to bad practices, inadequate selection and establishment, amongst others, their early elimination, and hence the loss of the ecosystem services they provide, is being promoted. For this reason, two tree risk assessment methods were developed to be applied in a complementary manner in urban parks, one basic visual (BV) and the other detailed visual (DV), both structured with the components of likelihood of failure, likelihood of impact, consequence and risk rating, being analyzed qualitatively and semi quantitatively. The methods were applied in 24 trees of Eucalyptus and Tipuana genus by two groups of assessors, experienced and inexperienced, totaling 192 assessments. Results were analyzed with a linear mixed model (LMM), which showed differences between both methods for the likelihood of failure, where the assessment of branches turned out to be the attribute with the highest impact. The methods proved to be suitable to be used in a complementary manner, since BV turns out to be efficient when it is necessary to assess a large number of trees. DV turned out to be more effective, since it was able to identify more precisely the attributes of the tree that must be considered for adequate risk mitigation and management. Therefore, their combined use is recommended for risk assessment in trees established in parks.

Seasonal variation affects understory and canopy tree plants in different ways. Palicourea racemosa is an understory shrub from the Rubiaceae family and is subject to seasonal oscillations of the environment, which can affect plant ecophysiological responses. This species is widely distributed in humid forests from southern Mexico to southeastern Brazil and has broad economic and ecological importance for the regions of occurrence, being used for food, ornamental and traditional medicine purposes. It is of fundamental importance to know ecophysiological responses of this species throughout dry and rainy periods, to understand the dynamics of understory plants in tropical forests. This research aimed at evaluating the effects of seasonality on ecophysiological aspects of P. racemosa at the Mata do Pau-Ferro State Park, municipality of Areia, Paraiba, Brazil. Over ten months, upper canopy structure indices were measured in ten individuals, climatic data were collected and their effects on gas exchange and chlorophyll indices in plants were evaluated. Results showed that the environmental variables correlated with the ecophysiological ones, with a strong association of soil moisture, rainfall and leaf area index of the upper canopy on ecophysiological aspects in P. racemosa plants, indicating that water availability and irradiance affect gas exchanges and photosynthetic pigment content. Except for intrinsic water use efficiency and instantaneous carboxylation efficiency, all ecophysiological variables showed significant differences over the months, showing the influence of seasonality on the ecophysiological responses of P. racemosa.
